Pakistan vs. Bangladesh

After a good day's rest for the organizers, we're at it again, this time with the third ODI between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The match is being held at The Oval and being played on a relatively slow pitch. This one is expected to be a low-scoring match, since Bangladesh just lost the coin toss and will be batting first.

Mohammed Ashraful and Javed Omar stepped on to the crease unsure of what approach to take on this pitch. This is only the second time this team has played here, last time being against England earlier this year when Bangladesh lost by 10 wickets.

The Bangali openers started off well, scoring off of almost every delivery, with Ashraful smacking bowlers like Sami and Naved-ul-Hasan. The two batsmen were able to take their partnership past 80 when a quick bouncer from Naved hit Ashraful right between the eyes and caused him to fall flat on his stumps, ousting him just three runs short of his 50. With the exception of Omar's inning, everything from here on was downhill for Bangladesh. Naved-ul-Hasan was able to clean bowl Iqbal at a single digit score, which triggered a solid 60 run partnership between Omar and Saleh.

Dark clouds covered the skies for Bangladesh once again as Afridi broke this partnership by taking out Saleh with a diving catch off of his own bowling. Even though Omar stayed not out throughout the whole inning, he was only able to score 66, even that at a very slow strike rate. Khaled Mashud was able to score some quick runs in the last couple of overs and dragged Bangladesh's score past 200.

Afridi blitz ensures victory

Shahid Afridi and Taufeeq Umar stepped on to the crease ready to chase a small total, but they weren't planning on doing so in a slow manner. Both batsmen took off right from the start and troubled all Bangali bowlers. This opening partnership went past 130 runs in 25 overs before Bangladesh were finally able to catch a break-through by getting rid of both openers in back-to-back overs.

By this time, of course, the damaged had already been done. With Younis Khan and Inzamam now on the crease, Pakistan won the match comfortably with 5 overs to go. But the Bangali bowlers left the ground with something to feel good about as they were able to get Inzi out for a low score of 20 runs.

Pakistan won the match by 7 wickets.

Man of the Match

Though this was a team effort from Pakistan, one man stood out against Bangladesh with a knock of 78 and troubled the opposition with the ball. I am, of course, referring to Shahid Afridi, who is the Man of this Match.

New Zealand vs England

The fourth Stick Cricket Cup ODI was held at the Oval between New Zealand and the hosts England. This is New Zealand's first match of the tournament whereas England have already played and convincingly won a match against Zimbabwe. This is the real test for England though, playing on a green pitch against one of the top bowlers in the world, Shane Bond, and without their best player from the last match. Paul Collingwood was reportedly injured during practice prior to Pakistan's win against Bangladesh and there are serious doubts of him participating in the rest of the tournament.

New Zealand won the toss, and much to England's dismay, decided to field first. As expected on such a pitch, England started off slow against Bond and Martin's quick bowling scoring at the rate of just 3.7 per over. But the real trouble started for England after the 10 over mark when everything seemed to go wrong for their batsmen. In a destructive over, Bond was able to rid of both openers, namely Trescothick and Strauss, followed by a string of great deliveries by Martin that sent Vaughan, Pietersen, and Flintoff packing, reducing England to 54/5.

Bell, who was somehow able to survive this assault from the kiwis, went on to form a slow but solid partnership with the keeper Geriant Jones. Though this may have saved England the humiliation of being bowled out for an extremely low score at home turf, the partnership still wasn't enough to take them past 200, a task even the minnow teams completed.

At the end of the inning, England had scored 178 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Kiwis beat beat England despite Flintoff's efforts

Stephen Fleming and Nathan Astle got off to a great start scoring almost 5 runs per over. The opening partnership went on for 57 runs before England were able to get a break through Astle's wicket. But to the English fans' disappointment, Flintoff was the only bowler who actually bowled well enough today. He sent Sinclair, who was in great form, back to the pavillion on his first delivery and then did the same with Fleming a few overs later.

This great spell from Flintoff didn't stop the kiwis from taking the match though. They were able to reach their target comfortably in 42.2 overs with 7 wickets in hand.

New Zealand beat England by 7 wickets.

Man of the Match

The Man of the Match for this match goes to Chris Martin, who destroyed England's top-middle order with some great swinging deliveries and finished with the awesome figures of 3/30 in 10 overs.

Sri Lanka vs West Indies

As the support for the Stick Cricket Cup grows (sarcasm ), the fifth SC Cup ODI got underway at the Lord's cricket ground. West Indies have already played and lost one match against India, but this will be Sri Lanka's first match in this tournament, and they'll be looking to outdo the Windies on this flat track pitch. The Windies captain Chanderpaul won the toss and decided to bat first, which really is a no-brainer.

West Indies seemed to have learned from their past mistakes and flew off to a great start against Vaas and Zoysa's bowling. Gayle and Hinds took the Windies' score to 62 without loss in just 10 overs, and were both looking to be in great form. Zoysa was finally able to get a break through for Lankans by taking Hinds' wicket just after he reached his 50.

From here on, even though Gayle kept batting with great agility, things slowed down quite a bit for the West Indies. The spinners did a good job keeping the runrate low for the rest of the match, especially after Gayle's dismissal at 94. Even though the Lankans were not able to pick off many of their batsmen, they did make sure no quick runs were scored for the rest of the inning. West Indies ended the inning at 221/2, which shouldn't be a big total to chase on this pitch.

Despite the fact that Dillon got an early break through for his team by taking out Jayasuria, Sri Lanka were able to get off to decent start mostly thanks to Gunawardane's aggressive batting. His perfect timing against Bradshaw put Sri Lanka in a great position to win the match.

A destructive spell from Gayle got rid of Jayantha and keeper Sangakarra. No one from the Lankan side seemed to be able to hold his ground against West Indies and help Gunawardane form a partnership, who by this time had scored a century off of just 105 balls. All that changed with Jayawardane's arrival who scored a quick few runs to put Sri Lanka back in the game.

Sri Lanka now needed 8 runs in the last over with Pedro Collins bowling. After a few good deliveries against Gunawardane, he got hit for a six on the fifth ball of the last over. Now needing two runs to win off the last ball, Guna hit a four to win the match for Sri Lanka!!

Sri Lanka win by 6 wickets!
