Substitutes

My fav is Ian Healy vs Arjuna Ranatunga:

"You don't get a runner just for being an overweight unfit fat c*nt"

or more classy

To Warne,
"Try putting a Mars bar on a good length. That should do it."

i think ponting (and Auatralia) would have been worse off if jones played because his bowling would have got ponting out anyway.

Ricky Ponting was run out by Gary Pratt, who was replacing the hospitalised Simon Jones. Hardly cheating!

The opposition captain has no case to argue about the other team's substitutes, only the umpires must consent.

I wonder if Ponting understands how england choose their subs?

For home games England choose a 12th man from a county that does not have a match on at the time of the game. This was done to release unwanted players back to their counties (to pacify fans of county cricket, and rightly so in my opition as a fan of county cricket). Of course they pick a player that is good in the field it would be pointless to choose a player that is a great bowler or batsman. Is it just sour grapes I wonder??

The English system of selecting subs is perfect IMO, they allow young-uns from the country to experience the hype of test cricket. I dont think this was cheating at all. Great move and definately sour grapes

The argument was not the fact that there was a 12th man on the field, but that he was a specialist fielder.

Very true. How would England feel if we decided to have Andrew Symonds as 12th man for every test, have our bowlers leave the field after every long bowling spell for a rub down and have him come on and field?? Who knows, it's in the rules but it's against the spirit. Such is life, it was a stupid single to take. Build a bridge.

Marto is due for a big score. I don't think he will be doing any stupid runs at the oval.

Been watching the women's ODI between England and Australia today....... one of the teams was using substitute fielders for no apparant reason..... and it was the Aussies!

so if Australia were to get Andrew Symonds to field for ist Glenn Mgrath... the he comes on and Tait goes off, then He comes aon and off goes lee and so on. Andrew is Arguably the best fielder is then world, and i would love to see how you poms would react if we did that. it may not be against the rules,, but it is strongly against the spirit of the game; the Preamble of Cricket.

I think for a situation llike this the best solution will be that the fielder to come in should be decided by the opposing captain.

So if Ponting doesnt want Pratt to do Jones's fielding it should be respected.England should give him other options to choose from.

I agree that it's not in the spirit of the game, but I couldn't really argue because we do it too. I don't agree with it and I'd rather we didn't, but they're keeping the bowlers in as a good a shape as possible and not breaking any rules so who am I to complain.

I would certainly have no objection to Australia having a specialist fielder as 12th man - that's just common sense.

It's not the fact that county fielders are the substitute fielders, it's the way that England are using them. Before/After each bowlers spell they come off the ground and the substitute goes on. Vaughan's reason is they drink a lot of liquid, but what I'm thinking is that they all have very very weak bladders or they are stretching the rules quite a bit

Its against the spirit of the game.

Andrew Symonds. Arguably the best fielder in the world? Uh no. Kaif, Gibbs, Collingwood way before him. Dwayne Bravo and Dwayne Smith can field better than Symonds.
