Surrey sign new deal with Asics

17 April 2009
Reporter: Amjad Raheem

Surrey have signed a 1-year deal with the sports kit manufacturers Asics. The kits have strayed from the traditional Surrey colour scheme. However, the new kits have received positive response from fans which shows that even after the recent events, the fans support the board and the new coach.

Ravi Shastri joins Surrey as head coach

31 March 2009

Shastri leaves for London and his new career

Former Indian spin bowler, coach and commentator has joined Surrey as the new head coach. He joins after the surprise resignation of the previous coach. He will be hoping to lead Surrey forward and bring changes to the county as he told our reporter Amjad Raheem:

What do you want to see happen at Surrey over the next year:

Well, that's easy, I'm not looking at over-ambitious goals, just to lead the team in the right direction and shaping the squad for the seasons to come. It will be important to get to know the guys as soon as possible and also of course the weather and pitch conditions will be different to what I'm usually used to. However the time I spent here in county cricket really should serve as my guide straight away.

Well, you've just answered my next question, but moving on, who do you see as the main stars in the squad for the next season:

Well, I need to see the guys in training first, but I need to trust the experienced guys like Mark (Ramprakash) and young players like Jade (Dernbach) who have got the guts and aggression and are the next generation of cricketers.

What about changes in personnel and the way things run:

I can't really say because you know the current load of guys are good and I know they'll work hard and will want to play. Hopefully I can make a few big name homegrown signings and possibly pull some strings for some overseas talent. Also, I'm looking for young players to grow at the county and evolve as players.

And finally, what about your commentary career, your an important commentator on Sky Sports and for lots of other channels. You are known as a house name, will it suffer:

Obviously yes, but I want to carry on and I'll still work during the IPL and International events like the World Cup, Champions Trophy and the World T20.

Shastri's contract is only for the 1 year but has an optional extension which Surrey have expressed they would be eager to fulfill if Shastri can achieve the end of season requirements

Err...why? 'Shastri's contract is only for the one year' makes perfect sense. English is my first language, so I should know.

Nevertheless good update but it's surprising that Shahtri's the coach

Our English teacher is gonna smack you if she come to know you too made a spelling mistake while correcting the other guy. :D

So, Shastri quitting as a commentator or what?
