The Madras High Court has directed Prasar Bharti, the national broadcaster, to telecast the upcoming series between India and Pakistan and has permitted them to engage any producer except Zee Telefilms and ESPN-Star.

The Indian board has welcomed the order and said that it will take necessary action as per the court's direction. "We welcome the court order," SK Nair, the board secretary, was reported as saying on the NDTV website. "We will take necessary action as per the high court direction." Nair added that the board will take action after obtaining the details of the court order.

Ten Sports and Sony, the two leading channels, have expressed their interest to produce the India-Pakistan series. Kunal Dasgupta, Sony India chief, told The Press Trust of India, "We are interested to produce the series and would approach the BCCI on the matter, though finer details in the judgement are yet to be seen." Sony had got international rights for 31 cricketing days last year, and were also responsible for telecast of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

Ten Sports also said discussions would take place on the issue. Sharmishta Rijhwani, managing director of Ten Sports, said, "Discussions will happen and we will be seeking production rights."

The Indian board had earlier said that the Pakistan series, beginning next week, may be called off if the telecast issue was not resolved.

KP Sivasubramanian, a judge in the Madras High Court, passed the ruling and added, "I am sure cricket fans will be happy now." He said a final judgement would be made later in the writ petition filed by Zee Telefilms after it was denied the TV rights by the board last September.

Doordarshan had also telecast the home series against Australia and South Africa earlier in the season on the advice of the Supreme Court. Ranbir Singh Mahendra, the board president, welcomed the interim order, saying all doubts about the Pakistan tour taking place had been removed. Mahendra told AFP: "We will abide by the court's judgement and finalise the production details soon."

The Pakistan team are due to arrive here on Monday to play three Tests and six one-day internationals on their first full tour of India since 1999. The first Test is scheduled to begin in Mohali on March 8.

dd again !! sooo sad ?
I hope they go for a production house other than ten sports
If u guys remember channl nine was the production company for a brief period starting from the SA tour to India in 2000 to the India-Aus series in 2001

Sky did the production for DD when England toured indi in 2001-2002
We had World sport nimbus producing a few series in the year 2002 and 2003
All these production houses were far better than ten sports
I hope they do not give th production rights to ten

Ah this is what I was afraid of and now I'm ****ed off. How the hell did the court ever get into this mess? What right does the court have to choose which channel gets to broadcast the series? This is not economic efficiency--giving the worst channel in the country the rights to broadcast. The government-owned channel and then the government will have to spend money buying production rights. I think after the Pak tour BCCI have got to stand up and tell the court to go screw themselves.

The rights should go to those who will produce the best broadcast and not those which some court randomly chooses to award the rights for. How'd this mess start anyway? Because of the BCCI's incapabilities. It's a sad world.

this is only an interim order.
but the indo pak series will be shown by dd with ,i think, the production being done by sony.
who else have they got
zee and espnpstar not even allowed the telecast or production neither have they been allowed to show"Sunny by night " the highlights package which they normally did show.!

according to the guy-ranbir singh mahendra the entire process would be finalised in about ten days time.if that happens they should only allow dd to telecast the 1st test match and thats it.

hey look at thisIn another setback for ESPN-Star Sports (ESS), Doordarshan has turned down their request to telecast highlights of the India-Pakistan series. Doordarshan was awarded the telecast rights for the series after a protracted court battle between ESS and Zee TV.

The CEO of Prasar Bharati (Doordarshan), KS Sarma, dismissed the idea of sharing feed with ESS. "We are not planning to do this, nor are we bound by any obligation to do so," said Sarma. The Times of India quoted him as saying, "as per an existing contract, we have a one-way contract which provides for Prasar Bharati getting live feed for one-day matches and highlights for Test matches incase ESS gets rights. However, we are not obliged to share any highlights with them."

SHOCKING!!!!!

I think one of us is a tad bit confused. As I understand it, DD has only the telecast rights. They now have to look for someone to produce the feed. In the Australia and RSA series, the feed was produced by Ten Sports. Whoever they choose (and they have been banned from choosing Zee/ESS) will be disgusting compared to ESS. And of course we can 'look forward' to Fair & Lovely Fourth Umpire. That will never be taken away.

so what is the end result for viewers in USA? will we be seeing the series or what? or will it be on willow.tv website?

another legal feud in the making...ESS say that DD has signed a contract of providing a one hour highlights package to them on every match day and DD say they are not bound by any such contract...one word for all these people is - a$$es...ESS are open to the "legal" option...

btw, the Madras High Court has given "free" hand to BCCI in selecting the producer by dismissing ESS, Zee and Set India...why the last one has not been allowed there's no clarification regarding it...at least they produce it well...when it comes to telecasting Set India are at par with DD...so now BCCI has again volleyed the ball back to the Court saying direct us whom we should choose...

frankly i donno if as Indians we should be embarrassed by this situation or feel pride in the fact that telecasting of a sport can generate so much furore over here and only here...

some kinda feed is also available on cricinfo(for the US viewers)...Shahid someone's on a derepping spree against u it seems...

set india had the satellite rights .
thats the reason why they are not being given the chance to produce it.
atleast the news channels mentioned it that way.

BREAKING NEWS ON TELECAST FRONT

Hi guys there is some great news for indian cricket fans...
After the India pakistan cricket series,The BCCI will be calling for new tenders which would include zee and espn star sports also.
This was declared yesterday by the madras high court. Also jagmohan dalmiya has been accussed of trying to invite companies other than zee for the telecast.
Zee also has the right to sue the BCCI as the court found that the way the tender process was cancelled was illegal and the reasons cited by BCCI were not good enough.Zee would not get any relief that is to say that they cannot telecast the remainder of the indo pak cricket series ut can ask for their losses to be covered up.The courts have also said that the Zee telefilms can take part in the next bidding process inspite of it not having the proper requirements.
So no more Fourth umpires and 4 ball overs for indian cricket fans all around.Either you will have something on zee and the " Taking Guard " and " Follow Through" on ESPN and STAR SPORTS. :cheers
