Match Notes

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first were put into trouble immediately by Kemar Roach and Holder as they lost 4 quick wickets for 40 runs. Australia lost all their top order batsman including Smith and Labuschagne. Cameron Green and Travis Head in the middle now had to steer the ship and get Australia to a respectable first inning total. Both put on a fantastic recovery and scored 95 runs in 261 deliveries. The pitch report said that losing 1 wicket will get you 2 but if you get your eye in, it will be difficult to get you out and that is exactly what Green and Head did. Green however was trapped plumb lbw by Holder as Australia now were 135/5. Alex Carey tried getting his eye in as Head departed for a well made 93 runs just 7 shy away from what would be an amazing 100 given Australia were 40/4. In the end Australia's first inning ended on a very mediocre 213. Roach and Cornwall were the pick of the bowlers taking 3 each with Holder and Chase taking 2 wickets each.

Like the Australia inning, West Indies completely lost all the advantage they had against a fiery Pat Cummins and Starc spell as they lost 6 quick wickets with only 68 on board. Even the lead the first inning rule looked far out of sight at this moment. Like Australian inning wicket keeper Joshua and Jason Holder built up what would be a match defining partnership. They put on 92 runs in 227 deliveries with Joshua scoring a well made and crucial 53 and Holder scoring 46 runs. With a little contribution from Cornwall, West Indies eventually fell short of Australia's first inning target and ended on 193 trailing 20 runs. Captain Cummins was the top wicket taker taking a 5 wicket hall and getting his side right into the game again.

Australia's second inning started identical to their first inning as they lost 3 quick wickets for only 26 runs on board. Marnus and Head who once again had to save the day then went on for a 71 run partnership helping Australia recover a little. Marnus was dismissed for 62 runs and Head kept going at one end as wickets kept tumbling on the other side. In the end Head was caught of Joseph for a well made 74 and Australia were bowled out for 201 runs giving West Indies a target of 222. Roach and Joseph were pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets each with all other bowlers taking 1 each.

West Indies if they chase would not only eliminate Australia, they would also move to the next stage. The pitch was not the most idea for the batsman but anything could been possible and West Indies did in the end achieve the impossible.

Braithwaite and Chanderpaul started positively for the opening wicket partnership as Braithwaite departed on 13 of just 17 deliveries. Athanze stepped into the crease and batted with Chanderpaul for a 24 run partnership before Chanderpaul was dismissed for 26 runs in 42 deliveries leaving West Indies at 46 for 2. Bonner and Athanze batted a small amount of time as Australia kept picking wickets at regular interval and Cummins was looking in red hot form as he took his third wicket for the day as Bonner was out LBW.

Athanze scored a well made 44 before he was caught behind by Carey of Cummins bowling making him his 4th victim. West Indies were 111 for 4 still needing 111 with 6 wickets in hand. Chase and Myers went into a block hole and put on a match winning partnership of 62 runs in 200 deliveries with Chase scoring a well made 50. In the end despite losing 6 wickets, West Indies chased down Australia's target of 222 and eliminated them from this championship cup.

West Indies will now advance to semi-finals and will wait the winner of South Africa and New Zealand to play at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. Sensational stuff this from the 9th ranked team to eliminate 1st ranked team.
