Englands third game of the tournament saw them play South Africa at the SCG. England were still without gooch who was stricken with 'welly belly' so Stewart continued to open with Ian Botham, who has been the best of an inconsistent England batting order so far in this tournament.
England batted first and got off to a terrible start, the top order unable to cope with the moving ball from Richard snell who took the first four wickets to fall.
England capitulated to 63-7 before dermot reeve knuckled down and being played a knock of real maturity , stealing singles and punishing the bad balls . With support from defreitas and illingworth, England, incredibly, managed to post 174 all out. Reeve was 9th man out for 66 from 68 balls.
In reply, South Africa bossed England's attack from the get-go, with Kepler Wessels finishing the match with a boundary off Botham, and reaching his century in the process.
Man of the Match was
Richard Snell for his fiery opening spell that ran through England's top order.
England's sorry bowling figures...
England now sit at the foot of the table, with one win from three games. Next up is a must win game against the West Indies, who, remember have a young Brian Lara opening the batting.
