My first selection will fill the hole at #5, and that will be
R.E. "Tip" Foster. One of the greatest batsmen of his day, his biggest weakness was availability, as commitments in football, studies, and diabetes all affected his time. But he averaged 40 in all County games, 51 in his only full season, 46 in Tests and made 287 in Sydney, the highest score for another 26.5 years until Andy Sandham made the first triple ton.
With the fact that I have the last pick in the draft, I need to prioritise here, so I'm gonna leave 50+ till last, and also leave that last bowler slot as I feel I've got more choice there. Whereas, for a 27-49 opener, I feel like I've got two choices. One is a underrated South African, but given he was more comfortable in the middle order, I'll go with my other choice -
Arthur Morris. Morris formed a formidable 1-2-3 with Sid Barnes and Bradman, both of whom are already picked in this draft, that was the front foot for the Invincibles team. He also averaged 46 in Tests and 51 in first class games, and especially noteworthy is that bad performances in the West Indies at the end of his career actually dragged that Test average below 50.
