The Barclays Premiership

Haha lol well said Vaughy! Rafa is it crappest manager ever! FACT!

Hang on a minute. Are you talking about the same guy who took Liverpool to their 5th Champions League title? A guy who also won the FA Cup? Oh yes, and he beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to the La Liga title with Valencia.

Just because his tactics are a little strange, it doesn't mean they don't work. I would wait and see what happens before judging his tactics.

Champions League and FA Cup were very lucky. And he never plays his strongest possible eleven!

He gets the results doesn't he? Of course picking Voronin over Torres sounds quite ludicris (sp?) but the guy has won major trophies and knows what he's doing.

Unfortunately for fortunately, only he knows what he is doing. He did brilliantly with Valencia no doubt, but I think he could have done a lot more with Liverpool. League trophies carry more weight than Cup trophies, imo.

Well you never know what Rafa does. What is Torres doing on the bench bring him on Rafa. Would not be surprise to Pompey winning this against a poor Liverpool side.

Liverpool 0-0 Portsmouth

livetext2jx6.jpg

1500: We are underway here at Wembley. Portsmouth kick-off from left to right.

1503: "This Liverpool midfield is outstanding. Look at who is in there.
It's probably one of the best in the world. I think Portsmouth will have a very
tough job stopping them, but if Stancu and Nugent can click, you never
know. I think it will finish 3-1 Liverpool"
Big Steve via text on 81111

1505: It's been a nervy start. Neither side have been able to get the
ball down and move it around. No chances as yet.

1507: Sulley Ali Muntari has gone down from a challenge by Steve
Finnan. Doesn't look to be serious, just a knock to the leg. He'll be fine to
continue.

goallk5.png
1509: GOAL Liverpool 0-1 Portsmouth
It's Portsmouth who take the lead with the very first chance of the game.
Danny Mills on the right played a great ball to Stancu, who flicked it past
Antwi. The ball fell into Nugent's path and placed the ball to the keeper's left.
Liverpool are appealing for offside, but it looks like Agger has played him on.
A fantastic move by Pompey.

1511: Watch a chance for Voronin to level straight after the goal. A
long ball by Finnan was met by the head of Crouch, knocking the ball into
Gerrard's feet on the edge of the area. Gerrard picked out an unmarked
Voronin 12 yards out who, somehow, puts his header past the post.

1516: Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin has another chance. Guardado's
cross took a deflection which landed in front of Voronin outside the area.
With a first time volley the ball flies past the right hand post and out for a
goal kick. Voronin is looking sharp, but hasn't found the target.

1518: "Nugent is a brilliant striker. He hasn't yet been able to prove
himself but this season he will. Pompey to win 3-0 and Nugent to get a
hattrick"

1519: A huge chance for Nugent to double their lead. Again it's
Stancu who plays him in, threading a great pass into the box. Nugent looked
to be offside but the flag stayed down, the striker's shot just kept out by
Reina. Portsmouth looking very dangerous at the moment.

1520: Voronin has yet another glorious chance to level things. It's
Crouch again who heads the ball down, to Alonso this time. Alonso lays it
through for Voronin who is clear and one-on-one with James. Voronin tries to
go under James but puts it past the left hand post.

1524: "Is it me or does Voronin look like an evil James Bond villain?
He's certainly shooting like one at the moment"

He does look a little shifty. Maybe he threatened Benitez into picking him?

1528: Big chances are coming thick and fast for Liverpool. This time
it's James that makes the save from Crouch. Portsmouth holding on to that
early Nugent goal, but Liverpool are pilling on the pressure.

1533: Another opportunity for Crouch, and again James denies him.
Good play by Liverpool, Gerrard's passing is precise as always to set up
Crouch. Liverpool's midfield are really showing their skills out there. Still 1-0
Pompey though.

1541: Portsmouth have their first chance for a while. Nugent and Leto
link up well down the left side. Leto cut the ball back for Muntari on the edge
of the area, who's shot was a comfortable save for Reina. Signs that
Portsmouth could easily make it 2-0 if Liverpool don't score soon.

1546: Well the half time whistle goes, and Portsmouth will definitely be
the happier of the two sides. It's David Nugent's ninth minute goal that
separates the two sides after 45 minutes.

Well as said not surprising at all. Rafa deserved to go 1-0 down with the side he had put up. Come on Pomper kill the Scousers .

Great written Treva.

Liverpool 0-1 Portsmouth

livetext2jx6.jpg

1602: Both sides are ready for the second half. Just the one
substitute, and it's a surprising one. The goalscorer, David Nugent, has been
replaced by Landon Donovan. Nugent has been the best player on the pitch
so far. Very odd move by Dave Jones.

1607: A good chance for Voronin five minutes into the second half.
Reynolds lost the ball 30 yards out to Voronin who charged forward, only for
his shot to hit the side netting.

1611: "Liverpool are creating chances but just can't put them away.
How long will it take for Benitez to realise he has a natural finisher on the
bench? Torres has to come on soon."
BBC 5 Live analyst Graham Taylor

subde6.gif
1617: Both Liverpool and Portsmouth have made substitutions. Ryan Babel
replaces Javier Mascherano, meaning Gerrard will slot back into the middle.
For Portsmouth Glen Johnson replaces a limping Callum Reynolds. It appears
he has hurt his right foot. Benitez still keeps Torres on the bench.

1619: Somehow David James has kept the ball out of the back of the
net. A long ball by Reina is flicked on by Crouch into the path of Voronin.
Voronin's shot is saved by James, but bounces towards the goal. James
reacts quickly to get up and dive on the ball just as Crouch slides to tap the
ball in. Portsmouth holding on by the skin of their teeth.

1626: Good work by Babel, Alonso and Finnan down the right side
forces James into a save. Babel hit a fierce shot from a tight angle after good
build up play, but James was again up to the challenge.

subde6.gif
1627: Finally Benitez brings on Fernando Torres. Infact both strikers are coming
off. Voronin and Crouch are replaced by Torres and Kewell. Benitez will need
a goal, otherwise he will have questions to answer about Torres after the
game.

subde6.gif
1629: Dave Jones uses his third sub, bringing on Croatian midfielder Niko
Kranjcar. Kranjcar moves out to the left to replace Leto.

1630: Torres almost makes an instant impact. Alonso played a brilliant
through ball to Babel who lifted a little ball into the box. Torres met the ball
with his head, James having to scramble backwards and flick the ball over the
bar. Liverpool continue to look dangerous, but can they beat James?

goalhs9.png
1633: GOAL Liverpool 0-2 Portsmouth
Portsmouth have doubled their lead with 16 minutes left! Great play Donovan
sets up the goal. Donovan picked the ball up in the middle of the park and
ran forward before playing a neat ball to Stancu. Stancu flicked it on to
Muntari, who had made a run behind the two defenders marking Stancu.
Muntari cut back inside of Antwi, and from a tight angle, drilled his shot into
the net. The Portsmouth fans are going crazy. Someone tell them it's not
over yet.

subde6.gif
1634: Portsmouth bring on John Utaka for Stancu. Stancu who has done very well
today. Also coming on is Pedro Mendes. He comes into the centre for Diop.

1638: "Benitez is going to get a massive amount of slack if Liverpool
lose this, and rightly so. If Torres had been on the pitch from the start I
think they would have scored 3 of 4 by now."

1640: Portsmouth almost make it 3-0. Donovan again is the creator,
setting up Utaka who can only hit straight at Reina. Liverpool are running out
of time.

subde6.gif
1641: Liverpool have brought on Jermaine Pennant to give a final push.
Guardado is the man to come off. This is Benitez's last through of the dice.

1642: What a chance for Pennant to pull one back. A good header
from Torres landed at Gerrard's feet. Gerrard used his superb vision to pick
out a cross-field run by Pennant. Pennant took the ball under control and
unleashed a left footed shot over the bar from 6 yards.

1644: Utaka has a long shot saved by Reina, after good play by
Donovan once again. Just six minutes plus stoppage time remaining.

1645: Another save by Reina, this time from Donovan.

goalhs9.png
1647: GOAL Liverpool 1-2 Portsmouth
Pennant has pulled on back for Liverpool with two minutes left. Insua played
a brilliant line ball for Torres to use his pace. Torres cut back inside and
played in Pennant. Pennant's first shot was saved by James, but he made no
mistake with the rebound. Could Liverpool have another late comeback?

subde6.gif
1650: Nunes replaces a tired Antwi at the back. There will be four minutes of
stoppage time.

goalhs9.png
1651: GOAL Liverpool 2-2 Portsmouth
They've only gone and done it! Ryan Babel with a scorcher. Gerrard and
Pennant played a one-two from a free kick, before Gerrard gave it to Finnan.
Finnan's cross was headed down by Agger where a waiting Babel smashed his
volley into the net. It's 2-2 with just two minutes of stoppage time. Penalty
time again, anyone?

1653: That's it. We will have penalties again. What a game it has
been. Liverpool looked down and out, but once again they came back from
the dead. Can they go on to win it? We shall find out in around ten minutes or so.

1658: Penalties
Kewell will step up first. It strikes the post!

James with the chance to put Pompey ahead. Wide! So it's 0-0 after a
penalty each.

Nunes steps up. Saved! David James has made another massive save. Surely
Man of the Match.

Donovan rolls up his socks after placing the ball on the spot. He hits it down
the middle but Reina sticks out a hand and saves it. Still no goals after four
penalties!

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is up next. Well he scores but James got a
hand to it. Finally a penalty has been scored.

Matip looks confident. Would you believe it? He's hit the bar! Liverpool lead 1-0.

If Insua scores then Portsmouth cannot miss. It's saved by James.
Portsmouth have the chance to level back up.

Kranjcar is the man to take it. Superb penalty. Finally Portsmouth score. It's
all square at 1-1.

It's Daniel Agger. He's hit the post! That's the 3rd player to hit the
woodwork. Now Portsmouth have a chance to win!

Can Pedro Mendes be a hero? Yes he can! Slotted away. Portsmouth have
won the Community Shield.

What a fantastic game. If this is anything to go by then this season will be
fantastic. Thank you for joining us today.

Well it came all the way to penalties. Liverpool came back in the match really well. Gerrard in the centre midfield is more threatening. Well good win for Pompey.

Wow, great match. Liverpool losing on penalties? We must be on Mars!
Great work Trev! Superb match report to read! :)
