The Barclays Premiership

lol why was Insua 4th and Agger 5th?

Good updates, I like your style of presentation.

Well Agger is pretty good at striking the ball, as you can see from some of his free kicks. Must be their penalty rating on the game.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Benitez unhappy at officials after Community Shield loss
Mark Richardson ? 02/08/2009 at Wembley Stadium

Liverpool 2 | Pennant 89, Babel 90
Portsmouth 2 | Nugent 10, Muntari 75

Portsmouth win 2-1 on penalties

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has criticised the officials after his side lost to Portsmouth on penalties in the opening game of the English season. Liverpool left it late to level with Portsmouth, but were defeated 2-1 on penalties at Wembley.

In front of a packed Wembley Stadium, Liverpool and Portsmouth kicked off under sparkling sunshine. It took just ten minutes for the deadlock to be broken, and it went in favour of Portsmouth. Danny Mills, recently joined from Derby County, played a ball from the right to Bogdan Stancu. Stancu took one touch before flicking the ball past Godwin Antwi and into David Nugent's path. With just Pepe Reina to beat, Nugent calmly slid the ball past the Spaniard to make it 1-0.

Liverpool had numerous chances throughout the next hour of the game, the best falling to Andriy Voronin who could only put his header wide of the post. David James played a big part in making sure Portsmouth kept their lead, saving from Voronin, Peter Crouch, Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres.

Benitez made a double change up front, bringing on Spanish star Fernando Torres and Harry Kewell to replace Voronin and Crouch. Torres almost made an immediate impact, only for James to tip his header of the bar.

With 15 minutes remaining Portsmouth doubled their lead. Landon Donovan's run through the middle gave space for Sulley Ali Muntari to pick up the ball inside the box after a Stancu flick on. Muntari cut back inside of Antwi, and unleashed his low shot in-between Reina and the near post.

Liverpool needed to score quickly, but it wasn't until the 89th minute that Jermaine Pennant halved the deficit. Great vision and speed by Torres down the left wing set up Pennant with a chance to score. James managed to keep out Pennant's first attempt, but had no chance in stopping the rebound, Pennant tapping into an open net.

With four minutes of stoppage time added on, Liverpool pushed for the equaliser. They found it through a Ryan Babel volley. Steve Finnan's cross was headed down by Daniel Agger to the left foot of Babel, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

The score remained at 2-2 at the final whistle, and so the game would be decided by penalties. After early misses by Kewell, Jos? Nunes, Chris James and Donovan, Steven Gerrard stepped up to put Liverpool ahead. When Marvin Matip missed, Emiliano Insua had the chance to put Liverpool two up. His penalty was the third to strike the woodwork, leaving Niko Kranjcar with a chance to draw level. He hit a superb penalty to tie things at 1-1, and after Agger's miss, Pedro Mendes stepped up to give Portsmouth the Community Shield title.

Benitez after the game criticised the officials, stating his opinion on the early goal. "It was a poor decision, and it cost us big time. Nugent was clearly offside, and you could tell that from the reaction of our players. I really think it's time we brought technology into football. There would be a lot more fairer results, and a lot less managers stating their disgust at decisions."

Portsmouth boss Dave Jones was delighted with his side's performance, in just his first competitive game in charge. "We played brilliantly from start to finish. We looked clinical in attack, and despite Liverpool pressing, we held on for almost 90 minutes. The forward lads were superb, creating good chances and putting them away. If we play like this for the rest of the season, then we have a great chance of making Europe again."

Liverpool now face Derby County away at Pride Park, whilst Portsmouth travel to Goodison to play Everton.

Well Nugent was just offside. But surely the linesman didnt spot it as the play went on quickly and Nugent scored . Rafa has a point but it useless to speak on it as the goal cant be taken back.

Great Written treva:clap

Nugent was offside and it clearly changed the match but that's football for you Rafa. When Kewell and Torres came on I thought Pompey would score another few. Rafa can put the blame on the ref for the decision but he made the mistake of playing Voronin. He had too many chances and wasted them all. Kewell on for a striker, that really shocked me aswell. Rafa made the wrong decisions and that's the reason they lost IMO.

Mascherano and Cech look to be the major signings of the summer. Mascherano for £28 million and I except Cech to be over £25 million minimum. Levy's taken over Fulham, what happened to Spurs? Rafa deserved to be warned, you just don't say that, especially considering he was trying to shift the blame.

Lol at Liverpool by the way. Unfortunate with the disallowed goal.

Petr Cech and Javier Mascherano going to Spain will hamper the Premier League but they can both be replaced. Cech is a quality goalkeeper but there are many keepers that are just a little worse than can be picked up for alot less money. Mascherano is a quality player but you can pick up players that are the same for much less money.

Disallowed goal? Where? It was a goal allowed to stand for Portsmouth that Benitez is so annoyed about.
