The best batsmen over the last 5 years in test match cricket

When Tendulkar was in full flight he would have just pushed in ahead I think but recently Ponting is definately the better player!

Let's not get into this...again. Statistically, Ponting and Tendulkar are basically as close as they could possibly get.

Well in the last 5 years Ponting is certainly better, for their overall careers it's a bit harder to argue for one over the other.

Ponting's away from home average against non minnow nations (Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and the West Indies...West Indies are minnows because none of their bowlers average under 40) is only 45.

Australian pitches are the flattest in world cricket, like Indian pitches but without help for spinners, and don't crap on about how the bounce is hard to deal with, none of the Australian players are bothered by it, even crap players like Langer feasted on home pitches.

So Ponting is definately not great away from home, therefore he is definately not the "greatest".

Maybe when Ponting scores 4 or 5 hundred in an innings in quick time he will have something to brag about, or 6 hundreds in 7 innings, until then he can just point to an average that is 1 better than Kallis when someone questions his "integrity".

And as far as test batting averages go, 50 is the new 40, it's a hell of a lot easier to average 50 these days.

Saying Ponting is better than Lara is like the 12 yr old who back in the 80s told me Allan Border was a better batsman than Viv Richards, and that Dean "strike rate of 70" Jones was the best ODI batsman in the world.

It's just a load of parochial jingoistic stupidity.

I suppose I should be more parochial and jingoistic, might help me fit in better, but I think that acting like that by default just because I was born here is stupid.

By the way, Allan Border wasn't even as good as Javed Miandad, Border's brilliant world cup batting in 92 proved that.

The true measure of a player's ability and strength of character is what people from other nations besides their own think of them.

Mate 1. Search those away statistics in the last 5 years as he is the easily the greatest in the last 5.

2. Langer was a great batsmen and why didn't he get fazed by Bounced? Because he grew up in WA playing on the WACA.

Slowcoach, you do realise that the tours played in New Zealand & England were during 2004/05 a period where Hayden went through a massive form slump and he also struggled whilst playing in Australia, a location where he averages over 60 in Test Cricket?
In 2002, Hayden absolutely mauled the bowling duo of Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald on South African surfaces.
To say Australian pitches are the flattest in the world is laughable, how much times has a player scored triple centuries and how many times have you seen Tests go for 5 days and two teams only bat once and assemble scores over 700-800 with declarations?
Have you seen how much movement the new ball bowlers get during the first hour and a half of a Test match at grounds like the Gabba, Wacca and the MCG?

People overrate the fact that Lara played in a weak team too much.
When he started out his career, he played in the very best team in the world and yet he was never able to match the success that Ponting has had over the past several years.

When on top form Lara was on another level. Consistency was not really his strength though and Ponting is just awesome at getting runs. I would rather watch Lara but Ricky Ponting is the man as far as test cricket goes.

Anyway Cook will be the best in the world in 10 years time :p

While Dean Jones may not have been the best ODI player,He was a fine batsman who was completely underrated by the Aussie selection,as was Bevan.(except Bevans biggest point was that he could bowl well too.)

Lara's forte was concentration. Once Lara got in, you were pretty much doomed for a large score. Kind of like Sanga or Jayawardene are today.
