First Test Is A Washout

After several days of rain, the match referee has decided to call the match off, meaning that the series is level at 0-0 going into the second and final test.
The rain started to fall just after the 100 over mark during drinks and has not stopped yet, meaning that Samit Patel finishes with an unbeaten 87*, a good score which should keep him in contention for a place in the team for the second test, which is the last chance to change the test team before the ashes begin.

Tune in tomorrow for the second test teams announcement

2nd Test Teams and Toss

After the change in proceedings regarding team announcement by the ICC, the captains will both hand their team sheets in to the match referee when they go to the middle for the toss. This was implemented with immediate effect.

Live from The Oval

JA: This is Jonathan Agnew in the middle for Cricket Live, broadcasted by Cricket Network online, on tv and on DAB digital radio. The two captains have joined me and the match referee in the middle, handed their team sheets in and we are ready for the toss.

[Match Referee tosses the coin]

RS: Heads

MR: Heads is the call, it is...tails, Andrew what would you like to do?

AS: We're going to have a bat, the pitch looks pretty even, and we would like to give our batsmen a go on a fresh pitch before the Ashes.

[Strauss and Sarwan shake hands]

JA: So Andrew, what's the team like?

AS: Well, we've changed it a bit, but you'll have to wait and see who comes out.

JA: Any sneek peeks?

AS: Well, I suppose it doesn't matter if I tell you that I'm playing

JA: Ha ha, on to you Ramnaresh, a surprise that you are captain today, has Chris said anything to you, if so what?

RS: No, Chris hasn't said anything, and nor do I know the complete list of people playing, the players have been told, but I can't remember who it was!

JA: Ok, I'll let you get back to your team mates

RS: Thanks

JA: So that just about rounds it up folks, the captains aren't letting anything slip, and all we seem to know is that England are batting first, stay tuned for the first session round up.

Day 1: The Report

England finish on 274/8

Prior top scores with 55 and Broad is still there on 49. It looks as if England may declare overnight and work on the West Indies batsmen early on in the morning with the new ball.

Things started well for England with Cook and Strauss forming a good early partnership until the day started to turn the West Indies' way. Quick wickets saw England struggling, and when Pietersen was run out on 43, England looked like they might have been all out.

Then Broad and Prior came together at the crease, and steadied the ship, not trying to score runs but simply putting away the bad balls. This technique saw them make the highest partnership of the day by far.

Then came the last over, and Sulieman Benn was looking for the wicket of Prior, two balls in to the over, he got him with a harsh LBW given when the ball was clearly outside the line of the stumps. Next ball, Graeme Swann, the new batsmen defended a ball into the air and a simple catch was swallowed up by the short leg fielder.

Benn finished with 3, and every other bowler chipped in, even if that meant not taking a wicket, Gayle bowled three overs including one maiden, and a catch that really should've been taken by the man at mid-on when Pietersen was only on 13.

Tomorrows day's play is crucial, if England decide to declare overnight then their bowlers will need to get the wickets of Gayle, Sarwan and Chanderpaul quickly and look to dismiss the West Indies for a small total.

Day 2: The Report

England: 334
West Indies 199/2

England finished all out for 334, with Broad making an impressive 69. Sulieman Benn was the bowler who capitalised on the England's tail batting being very poor with 5 wickets.
West Indies then had around half an hour to settle at the crease before lunch, with a great opening stand between the openers which saw Gayle score 90 before being undone by a decent ball from Sidebottom who has taken both wickets.
Sarwan and Chanderpaul finished the day at the crease, which was curtailed slightly early due to rain.

More to come...

Windies Abandon 2nd Test Over Pay Row

Reports started to come through early this morning of the West Indies squad being pictured leaving their team hotel with all their suitcases and kitbags, sparking speculation on whether they were boycotting the match and series becuase of a row over pay.

Around 8:30am, the West Indies made a press release saying that in no way could the series continue becuase of the ongoing row over pay. Captain Chris Gayle said that it was sad that it had to end this way, but the team isn't happy and so he decided to take the team home.

It is now unclear what England will do to fill the space between now and the World T20 in a few weeks time, but it is rumoured that a Tri-Nation tournament will be hastily organized including England, Scotland and Ireland. This would consist of a round-robin group stage, with the top two teams playing a final. All this would be played at Lords, the home of cricket.

The Schedule will be as follows:

England vs Ireland
Ireland vs Scotland
Scotland vs England

All money raised will go towards the winning teams designated charity, and has been described as a Warm-Up tournament for the World T20, meaning that teams would play in their World T20 kits.

Match 1: England vs Ireland

Ireland batted first, posting a respectable total of 185, with Paul Collingwood the pick of the bowlers taking 3/14, his second over a double-wicket maiden.

England were struggling, playing as if it were a 40/50 over match, needed 14 an over to win with 7 overs remaining. Long faces were all around, and they got even longer when Pietersen gave his wicket away in a typical KP way, leaving a straight one!!
Eventually though, it fell to Dimi Mascarenhas and Graham Napier to score 33 from 3 overs, and with 2 overs remaining it became 18 from 2. A couple of sixes from Dimi saw England go to within another maximum of victory. Graham Napier, trying to hit that winning six, top edged it straight to the keeper and Ireland thought they may have a chance with Graeme Swann at the crease. Unfortunately for them, Swann scored 3 off one ball and on the ball after, Mascarenhas scored the winning boundary, a luscious drive through the covers.

Join us tomorrow for the match between Ireland and Scotland

Ireland vs Scotland

Scotland win this tense encounter on the penultimate ball of the match, with Majid Haq taking figures of 5/23 as Ireland struggled to 109/8 off of their 20 Overs, however during the innings break, there was a shower of rather heavy rain which meant that 4 Overs were lost and Scotland were now chasing 88 from 16 Overs on a damp pitch where the ball wouldn't bounce as much as it would have earlier in the day.
After 8 of the 16 overs, Scotland were way ahead of the run rate on 59/1, an easy win looked on the cards. However, runs slowed and Ireland began to claw back, taking 4 quick wickets in 2 overs. With 2 overs remaining, Scotland needed 19 runs. And with 1 over to go, things looked even more improbable when they were chasing 14. However 2 consecutive sixes from the middle order batsmen won the match for Scotland after losing a wicket and scoring a 4.

England vs Scotland to come later
