Story A Journey with England (Summer of Cricket) >> Cricket Coach 2007

Not a great score there. Prior deserved a 50 and good to see the tail give England confidence. Should be interesting to see how well England bowl...

I recently posted the Day 2 summary. However, I recently found out that there was a problem with the html output. All this means is that I will just review the game in one write-up, showing the final scorecard at the end. Day 1 is as it was, so I will start with Day 2.

Overall Summary (Excluding Day 1)

England needed to take early wickets on Day, they failed to do so. Gayle and Smith shared in a huge partnership, and when taking the game away from England. The partnership was worth nearly 200 which meant that they were not too far behind at all. The did very well to survive the new ball, and they both played very attacking innings and punished England for their low first innings total. Anderson picked both of them up, Smith unlucky to miss out on a well deserved hundred, but Gayle got their. The next four batsmen all got starts but England managed to get them before it was too late, Monty bowling very well. Harmsion was then ruthless with the tail and took five-for in the end. England had done well to restrict them to 381, but it could all be too late.

England came out and batted very well. They made scores all the way down and the only thing they lacked was a century. Cook made a well-played 75 to at least give England a decent start, even though wickets fell around him. It was the stand-out partnership between Collingwood and Prior that was the one to savior though. They played extremely positive innings, and did not let the situation change the way they would play. When Collingwood went though, it was the end of England's innings. The tail did not hang around at all, and this was very disappointing from England's point of view. Prior was left stranded at the end, this knocked proved his worth in the side despite the annoyance of England's batting collapse. Well bowled Tino Best again, he really was proving to be a thorn in England's side this series.

The West Indies were set a chaseable target, nevertheless it could be difficult if England bowled well, and did not gift them their runs. It was not to be though, as Smith got his hundred this time round and more scores came from the middle order to see them home. It was a very comfortable chase, and a very good win for a West Indies side expected to really struggle on this tour. The series was level, England desperately needed to win the last Test match, otherwise many questions would be asked, if they were not being already.

Make sure to look out for the next Test Match, the last in the series, which will decide how this series is settled.

Scorecard

2nd Test match - West Indies win by 7 Wickets

Just wondering, would you prefer if I did the summary in this format, ie a summary of the whole game, or the summary of each day?

Poor bowling overall I would say. Lower order batting also a failure. I would expect England to win the last game comfortably but tbh they should have won this series 3-0. Should be interesting 3rd test...

Thanks a lot for the comment. Yes, England should have thrashed them 3-0. They need a performance, and a big one at that, in the last Test match.

Stupid CC07, 3 tests instead of 4! ahh well England should still win...

It should be like this though. Cricket Coach are on a mission to make sure the fixtures are the way they should be :p

It was a fantastic win by Windies :happy Nice to see a Windies victory atleast here that too Gayle scoring well :p I am backing up Windies to win the next one ;) Nicely presented with neat writing Rabz

From now on I'll write a summary of the whole game at one time.

3rd Test

After the West Indies had won the last Test match, it had created a very important last Test for both sides. England had not lost a Test series at home under England. They did not want to be contemplating this though, they had to win this game and win this series, as many thought they should have already won it by now.

The two captains walked out to the middle, Sarwan walked out to the middle, called heads, and it was a heads. He decided to have a bat first, on what seemed a very good batting track at the Oval. England would be kept interested though, as it looked quite dry, and may get some turn and bounce.

The openers strode out, it wasn't long before both Gayle and Smith were gone, loosely driving at the swinging ball from Hoggard. Big blows from England, as this opening pair had caused England a lot of trouble in the last Test match, and it was key that they got them early. Deonarine and Sarwan were in, they played the ball around very nicely, and put the bad balls away off the opening bowlers. Hoggard picked up another though, just as this partnership was looking set. Another poor shot saw the end of Deonarine. England changed the attack after this, a few poor deliveries from Hoggard, showing that he was tired. It had been a great spell from him however. Panesar and Anderson were bowling together. Panesar had a sublime spell, picking up five-fer of only eleven overs. Anderson also picked up two. This had been a great bowling performance from England, and so far they had looked extremely determined to put the last Test match behind them. West Indies all out for 151, Panesar the pick of the bowlers, with a great opening spell from Hoggard also.

England walked out to bat, Strauss and Cook played themselves in and were looking very comfortable. This was the way it carried on, they survived everything that was thrown at them and played some lovely shots. They both scored centuries, but that was not they end, they carried on going. They brought up their 150s and Cook went shortly after for 156. It was a quality partnership, from a partnership that was being questioned by many. They had proved their doubters wrong, they could see off the new ball and score many runs. A triple hundred partnership paved the way for England's middle order to hammer home the lead. They failed slightly in doing this. Two quick wickets after the opening partnership may have brought about a collapse, but Vaughan, and particularly Collingwood made sure this collapse would not happen. A few cameos down the order meant that England reached 522, and the West Indies trailed by 371. Credit to Collymore though, who plugged away throughout the innings, and picked up 5-fer for his hard work. England were firmly in the driving seat.

The West Indies came out to bat and again the top order failed. Gayle and Smith went to Anderson and Hoggard respectively. However, a big partnership between Deonarine and Sarwan meant that they may be back in it. Deonarine went to the bowling of Panesar, who had caused the West Indian batsmen all sorts of problems. Harmison then got Chanderpaul early, and England thought they had it in the bag. They were not expecting such a fluid knock from Ramdin however, he looked determined to make England work. It was not to be in the end though, as Harmison and Panesar shared the wickets. Sarwan made 101 and Ramdin 83. Panesar picked up another 5 wicket haul, which gave him 10 in the match, well bowled him. It was a pitch many thought he would thrive on, and so he did. Harmision picked up 3 as well.

It was a very convincing win by England they had needed it as well. They won the series 2-1 and now looked ahead towards the T20, and then the 5 ODIs.

England win the 3rd Test by an innings and 87 runs. England win the series 2-1.

Squad Announced

England have kept the same squad for both the T20 and the ODIs. A very positive squad was picked, and they looked to have turned a corner in terms of selection in the shorter forms of the game.

Squad

Batsmen

James Benning
Darren Maddy
Mark Pettini
Ian Bell
Owais Shah
Paul Collingwood

All-Rounders

Andrew Flintoff
Tim Bresnan
Arul Suppiah

Bowlers

James Anderson
Monty Panesar
Liam Plunkett
Amjad Khan
James Kirtley

A very interesting squad, with a lot of new faces. The top of the order was a key discussion in the selectors meeting. They went with three very positive batsmen, and wanted to send out a signal that they wanted to go after the power-plays. Benning and Maddy were having fantastic seasons with the bat in List A cricket so far. Benning was also taking is form into first-class cricket. Pettini is a very bright hope as well, and has all the shots.

Darren Maddy's Season -

James Benning's Season -

Tim Bresnan was a young talent, and could swing the bat when needed, as could Arul Suppiah. Suppiah was lucky to get included in the squad as his left-arm spin doesn't add much variation when Panesar is in the side. However, it is a good batsmen as well, and has played well for Somerset and deserves his selection. The key topic in the bowling department was bowling at the death, and for this very reason Kirtley was picked, with nagging accuracy over his yorkers, and a very good slower ball, he was going to be important. The only thing that hampers him is his age. Amjad Khan though, is a very exiting young bowler, and will hopefully learn a lot from being in these surroundings.

All in all, a very exiting squad, and it indicates that this could be a very competitive series.

T20 match coming up...

Panesar was absolutely awesome! A 303 opening partnership also a fantastic highlight of the game. Windies poor and England showed them up big time. That's more like what we should have seen in the first 2 tests. Monty MotM for me.

Love the squad for Twenty20 and ODI series. Khan maybe a bit of a dubious decision but I like the inclusion of Maddy, Bresnan, Suppiah, Kirtley, Pettini and Benning. Will be interesting to see how they do...

Twenty20

There was only going to be one Twenty20 between these sides, so this was an important game. England had a new look side, and everyone wanted to shine. The West Indies kept the same side as their Test side, confident they could adjust to this faster paced game.

England

Darren Maddy
James Benning
Owais Shah
Ian Bell
*Paul Collingwood
+Matt Prior
Andrew Flintoff
Tim Bresnan
James Anderson
James Kirtley
Monty Panesar

West Indies

Paul Collingwood won his first toss as England captain. He chose to bat first, and put pressure on West Indies with a big total. England got off to a great start, Benning and Maddy playing some great shots. They both looked very determined to thanks the selectors for their inclusion. They put on 116 for the first wicket after 12 overs. Benning had kept much of the strike and was going very well, he had just past 50 when Maddy got out. Maddy, trying to hit Dave Mohammad out of the park, failed in doing so, and was caught after the ball went very high in the air. He had given England a great start along with Benning, very encouraging signs. Benning carried on his merry way, and was starting to really open up now. He hit a few sixes high into the stands and the crowd were loving it. Shah went early trying to increase the run rate, but Bell shared in a very good partnership with Benning, even though Bell didn't score many. Benning brought up a scintillating hundred, full of power and class. Well played James Benning, on his England debut. Bell couldn't quite find the boundaries though, and got out on the last ball of the innings. He had played well in the partnership, but perhaps England should have had somebody else come in before him, as they were in such a good position, and could have made a higher total. Still, it was a good score, and they could take a lot out of it, especially the runs from the new boys. Most of the West Indian bowlers got hit, but that's all you expect in this form of the game. West Indies needed 180 to win.

They started well, Smith and Gayle looking in good form. Kirtley got Gayle and Flintoff got Deonarine. Sarwan played brilliantly though and along with Smith edged closer to the target. They absolutely nailed it, and even when Smith fell and the score was 151, Sarwan and Chanderpaul chased it down with more than 5 overs left! A poor bowling performance from England, they couldn't exert any pressure at any time. Nevertheless, Sarwan had played one of the best knocks you will see in a T20 game, even though he didn't hit a six.

So England showed that even with a new look side, they still had a lot of work to do, esepcially in the bowling department, hopefully their performances would improve in the 50-over games.

West Indies win by 7 wickets

The only change in the two sides was Arul Suppiah in for Tim Bresnan for England. Moores was hesitant about having two left-arm spinners in the side, but realised that Suppiah was better with the bat. Also, Bresnan's performance with the ball in the T20 didn't help his causes.

It was again a new look side for England, many made their debuts in ODIs. A key thing was how much England would attack the power-plays. Especially now with two very positive players opening the batting. It was all shaping up to be a very interesting series and match.

It was going to be the West Indies facing the power-plays first up though, as they won the toss and chose to bat first. An interesting decision, and Paul Collingwood said he would have had a bowl first on what seems like a seamer friendly wicket.

England came out and got the wicket of Gayle very early, a huge blow for the West Indies, as he was convincingly bowled by Andrew Flintoff. Flintoff was looking as good as ever after his injury, good signs for England. Deonarine came out and played some very good shots, and really took the attack to England. England were put on the back-foot very early. Paul Collingwood, who must have been feeling nervous as it was his first ODI as captain, made what seemed a very strange decision to bring on Monty Panesar in the first 10 overs. Collingwood had faith in his very good left-arm spinner, and had men around that bat for him, he wanted to see Monty thrive in ODI cricket. It worked as well! Smith was caught behind by Matt Prior, a good take, and Collingwood was taking all the plaudits. The wickets then fell quickly, only a couple of 20s and a good knock of 68 from Deonarine. West Indies bowled out for a very poor 187. Panesar and Flintoff bowling very well, in-fact the whole of the England attack bowling well.

England came out, expecting to chase down a relatively easy target, though small scores always seem to be made out to look harder to chase down than they should be. England got off to a great start with the two openers, they put on 47 for the first wicket off 7.2 overs. Maddy went to Collymore. Scores all the way down, everyone getting starts but not taking them on. Bell, the most negative in terms of strike-rate of the England batsmen saw England home though. A very good innings in the context of the game, and this could be Bell's role in this new England line-up. Suppiah saw England home on his debut, which must have been satisfying for him, 6 off 6 balls. England reached the target with 4 wickets to spare, not an easy win, but they looked like seeing it through right through the batting performance.

A very good performance from England, especially bowling wise. It was great to have Freddy back, and they all made the most of the conditions. Excellent captaicly from Collingwood, who looked positive at all times, and looked to have put the negative England one-day cricket behind them. A lot of positives to take from the match for England, less from the Windies.

England 1-0 up in the series, they will want to extend their advantage in the next game.

England win by 4 wickets and lead the series 1-0

Scorecard

After a great test series, the one dayers look like they are going to be close as well. Keep up the good work. By the way perfer the new format!

2nd ODI

The sides were unchanged. Both confident in their side's ability.

Sarwan won the toss again, and chose to have a bat...again. He would be hoping that the batsmen would apply themselves better than the last game, and it was a better pitch to be batting on.

England came out fired up, the confidence was there for all to see, Peter Moores had pushed England's one-day game on already. The two openers, Flintoff and Anderson, started off very well bowling with a lot of pace. They were rewarded for their efforts and the top 3 batsmen all went cheaply, 2 to Anderson and 1 to Freddy.

England may have got complacent, because the next partnership turned out be a very good one, and an attacking one. Chanderpaul played some unconventional shots and was going at a very good rate, and Sarwan was looking very good as well. They went a 6.5 an over in the 20 overs, and Chanderpaul got out at the end of them to Kirtley, an important wicket. Ramdin carried on the good work with Sarwan though and they got to 230 of 40 overs. 300 was in sight, but when Ramdin went and Sarwan quickly followed, they only reached 262. England had a chance because of this collapse. Kirtley had bowled very well to restrict them to this score, it would have been a lot worse if it was not for his accuracy and variations.

England came out and did not get off to the best of starts, Edwards taking 3 early wickets. Shah and Collingwood were looking determined though, and they both looked in great nick. Shah was playing some wonderful shots and was going at more than a run-a-ball. England past 100, but then the key wicket came of Shah, who was very annoyed, as he wanted to cement his place in this side. Mohammad had a very good spell and took 3 quick wickets. England were in all sorts of trouble, and the tail was eventually dismissed to leave England on 196. England needed Shah to have gone on to have any sort of chance, but truth be said, they never came to the party, the batsmen failed chasing down a slightly above average score.

England now had to look forward to the next game, they desperately wanted to win this series, as it would give a great start to the summer. West Indies would have been pleased, they had got themselves back in it, and needed to keep the intensity up.

West Indies won by 66 runs

Scorecard

Thanks for all the comments so far, next game coming up quite soon.
