There wasn't any chance for Canterbury in the whole match.
Bopara Guptill Styris did exceptionally well.

Great presentation. Don't have words to describe.

After one round of exciting HRV Cup cricket, here is the points table:

HRV CUP POINTS TABLE

PpointsTable.png

The points work in this way:
~ 5 pts for a bonus point win
~ 4 pts for win
~ 1 pt for a bonus point loss
~ 0 pts for a loss

Bonus points are scored by the winning team if they restrict their opposition to under 80% of their score, or chase down their target within 18 overs. If the winning side doesn't score a bonus point, it goes to the losing opposition.
If teams are equal on points, the positions on the table are decided by net run rate.

Not a great start to our campaign! We lost and we deserved to lose. We didn't make the best of our chances and never gained any momentum. I'm not reading too much into it - it's only one T20 and we've all got our ways of describing how it can be a bit of a lottery. But there were still some lessons to be learnt, and we'll have to sort out a few things quickly if we are to have any chance in this competition.

Our Bowling and Fielding
I didn't think we bowled too badly, we just bowled a few too many loose balls and extras. Brent Arnel started us off pretty well, GA (Aldridge) was a bit expensive but he has his good days and his bad days, I'm happy to keep him in the side for a little longer. Braddles (Scott) didn't bowl particularly well in the middle stages, but once again he was excellent at the death for us. However, Arnel wasn't as impressive - the way he bowled at the start it might be a plan to have him bowl his 4 at the top of the innings. Dan had a horror first over but that was just unlucky, and he came back well. Anton bowled well in his two overs, and I hate to say it!:facepalm But Kane bowled pretty well for the majority of his spell. Another thing I hate to say is that Cam Merchant batted pretty well. He's one psycho nutter - he had some time with us a couple of years back but we ended up dropping him and he went off to the Firebirds. We were happy to see the back of him at the time but sheez he's improved a bit! Still gets ridiculously amped up - "high arousal levels" according to our psychologist, but to be fair he won them the game in some respects.
On the fielding side of things I couldn't really be happier. We dived around, and I can't remember any dropped catches or even any misfields. That was a pretty good effort!

Our Batting
Our batting was more concerning. I liked the idea of Flynny at the top of the order but he didn't show his skill there on this occassion. He just wasn't hitting the ball that well and put a lot of pressure on Dilsh, who by the way I thought batted quite well until he got out. Kane showed how much he has improved at this level with really a masterclass on how to construct a T20 innings with minimum risk, but bugger me his lb was soft! :doh
I was really annoyed with my innings - on the scorecard I batted too slowly but I was just about to unleash when bloody Dave (Jeetan Patel) just tempted me with a moon ball that should really have been hit over the Vance Stand. Spinners would have to be the luckiest breed!
Peter McGlashan and Anton Devcich failed but did nothing much to suggest they were out of their depth at their respective positions - and BJ was a revelation at no. 7. He said before the game that he'd been working hard on his expansive game but the boys took one look at his biceps and just laughed. Gotta hand it to him though, he showed us up and really gave the ball a tonk! :clap
Dan wasn't that much of an asset at no. 8, I didn't feel. If he's still keen to let someone new have a go at the top, he might just have to stay at 8 though, because we have a lot of batsmen vying for middle order spots. He's a great cricketer but if he's not opening the batting I'd rather not have him displacing Anton, Peter or myself in the middle order. Hopefully he can be of some use as a closer by accessing more areas of the field with his repertoire of strokes.

The Options
I don't think I'll be changing much at this stage. When Timmy Southee comes back into the picture one of the pacers will probably have to miss out initially. If Daniel Flynn just doesn't warm to his opening task any more, we could try BJ, maybe Michael Parlane or maybe get Dan back up there. Joe Yovich deserves ago somewhere in the middle to lower order and with his fast mediums somewhere along the line, but we'll have to see how much we use Bucko (Bruce) Martin - with Dan, as well as Kane, Dilsh, and Anton, it's difficult to see him getting too much bowling over the tournament, but we'll see.
