I was just lazing around flicking between the channels on TV when my phone rang. My girlfriend answered it and practically threw it at me. ?Sounds important,? she said. I picked it up ?hello?. ?Hello, I am John Sheens, Coach of the Western Australia Warriors and I?m offering you a contract to play with us. I?ve seen you play and I must say I?m quite impressed. The offer?s there if your interested.? I?d be delighted to play for you,? I replied.
?Excellent,? Said John. ?Come to the WACA tomorrow at 9:30am And bring your Kit you?ll need it.?
?I?ll be there? I hung up and told my girlfriend the news. She was ever so happy for me.
Later that night I lay awake in bed. I was restless but I couldn?t stop think about how the team would react with me entering the side.
Wednesday 12th August
WACA 9:30
I arrived at the WACA just on time. Feeling very confident too. I met the coach and one of the WA Selectors outside the entrance. The two men were discussing about player retirement but when John saw me he interrupted his conversation. ?Ah Brendan, Pleasure to meet you. This is Tim Foreman he is one the WA Selectors. If you?ll just follow me we?ll begin.? I followed John into his office, so to speak. I was asked to read my contract to see if it was within my recommendations. I signed on the dotted line. I was then shown into the dressing room where the team was gathered. The team seemed very welcoming. Quite the opposite I was kept awake for.
After the introductions we headed down to the nets.
John gathered us around and said ?Guys we?ve got less than a month to prepare for our first game of the season. You?ll receive your schedules tomorrow but for today we?re just going to have a two hour net session, then tomorrow we?ll start the hard stuff. So let?s get started. Brendan, Gilly pad up. You to will bat first. The rest of you start bowling.
With our game in just three weeks I knew we had to put in 110%.
