..and the British public. Paraphrasd from Jack Bannister in his book "The Innings Of My Life".

"When Dennis Amiss retired in 1987, I rang Boycott to help me with a tribute for the Birmingham Post. He was not only generous in his praise, but he showed remarkable recall of their early games in opposition in second XI cricket nearly 30 years previously.

And, more recently, he organised a get-together for Amiss, Tony Lewis and me down to the last detail and he entertained us almost royally in his favourite restaurant in Barnsley. Royally? Apt, I suppose, because he is king to some people and clown to others. Me? Never mind "the innings of HIS life", if ever I wanted someone to play one for mine, it would be Geoffrey Boycott".

Boycs is a legend in a strange way. He wasn't ever the most popular character in the England team, this proven in an anecdote i once heard from a mate of my Dad's. Apparently the England lads were on there way out and someone said to one of the guys to go and ask Geoffrey if he wanted to come along. He wasnt happy about it but went to ask him anyway. He walked into Boycs' room and low and behold Boycs was in just a pair of underpants all padded up practising his shots in the mirror. The guy then said 'i'll leave ya to it Boycs' and left. I love that story.

Certain people may not like the bloke, i'm not his biggest fan, but there's no doubting the detirmination he had to succeed and the talent he had was magnificent. He was a brilliant batsman.

People either love him or hate him, he's a very opinionated man who always speaks his mind. Fantastic cricketer and I often enjoy listening to him from a 'coaching' perspective.

I have always liked him through his speaking his mind and he often brings a fun side to commentary.

He's a brilliant coach and speaks more sense about cricket than most. It's just that he is incredibly blunt, which is an admirable quality of sorts.

Boycott is amazing. Bob Willis tries to emulate him but just fails miserably.

Because he is a closet Mackam, (a person from the Wearside area of North East England......and he apparently changed his name by deed poll to Dylan in honour of his fave singer Bob Dylan)!! He and Boyks could have some sort of "dourfest" contest between them where the pride of Wearside/Yorkshire may be at stake.

He is, to me anyway, mean moody and magnificent......I like him.

Lies! Willis is entertainment.

"Billy Bowden is just a show pony"
"Darryl Harper should not be umpiring on a Village Green!"

Well i dont mind boycott. Of course i havent been around on this planet long enough to see him play. But from what i have heard he is a incredibly boring but good batsmen. I have read one of the master class's of batting he wrote. Quite good actually.

Willis is extremely good. Boycott is a legend. I hold him at the same breath as Richie Benaud and the Victorian larikan Bill Lawry (was lawry a trouble maker in his youth?). The billy bowden comment from willis was gold...

I love the guy. Honest and speaks his mind, a true great. People who lie and talk crap to make friends and knobs, he speaks his mind and that's how everyone should be.

I totally agree. Moody magnificent and enigmatic. The way he was aware of his talents and limitations as a young 'un and how he basically single handedly
grafted on his batting technique....suppose he could have been a little more analytical and driven with his bowling but that doesnt impinge on him because he knew he was picked for teams as a run getter and that possibly by concentrating more on bowling would affect his batting adversely.

Love him or hate him..you can't ignore him as a person..or as a top opening batsman. His no nonesense commentaries and comments when he is on TV are a joy to behold.

He is the genuine article....Old school Yorkshireman/Englishman:hpraise

Im surprised to see so many people liking Boycs. I thaught he was most hated yerter years player. I know for fact that none of those who played with him like him.

I just loved his commentary growing up. But since his operation hes not same anymore.
