:zim: :bat: Dion Ebrahim

Nominated by
: @Nilay_60

Test stats: 1,225 runs @ 22.68 (best 95) in 29 matches
First-class stats: 4,439 runs @ 30.19 (5 centuries, best 188) in 88 matches

I like it when Dion Ebrahim comes up because I've played against his old club side countless times. By that point he'd moved on to pastures new, but if there's one thing that his huge weight of runs for said club emphasised, it was that Test cricketers - even the ones who were pretty mediocre at that level - are on another plane from most mere mortals. At that higher level though, Ebrahim was a limited player who played within those limitations in order to set the best platform he could for the more naturally gifted players down the order.

And the player goes to... @Master Bates

His team so far:
:zim: :bat: Dion Ebrahim
:aus: :bat: Walter Giffen
:ban: :bwl: Sajedul Islam
:sco: :ar: Euan McIntyre

Ibrahim really strengthens this side, which hitherto was distinctly lacking in batsmen.

:ban: :bat: Mehrab Hossain

Nominated by
: @El Loco

Test stats: 241 runs @ 13.38 (best 71) in 9 matches
First-class stats: 2,838 runs @ 28.38 (5 centuries, best 158) in 61 matches

I feel like these kind of career stats are the sort of thing you'd have seen from players like Bas Zuiderent, Morris Ouma or Geoff Barnett if their respective countries had been granted Test status. But their countries weren't - it was Bangladesh who got the arguably premature promotion after the 1999 World Cup, and players like Mehrab who were faced with one of the steepest learning curves in cricket history. It wasn't pretty, but I do have a weird soft spot for statistically average players.

And the player goes to... @DalePlaysCricket

His team so far:
:ban: :bat: Mehrab Hossain
:saf: :bat: Philip Hutchinson
:eng: :bwl: Mason Crane
:ban: :bwl: Rubel Hossain

It's really weird - I can't work out if this side is okay or terrible. It doesn't have anyone like Raja Maharaj Singh, but nor does it have anyone who was really any good.[DOUBLEPOST=1586963339][/DOUBLEPOST]

I did make it as clear as I possibly could by putting it in the rules, but I've enjoyed looking up guys like Bill Bell

Could be worse...

Bas Zuiderent!!! There’s a blast from the past!
He was one of my favourite players for quite a while, but he came to my attention because of a database error on Cricket Captain 2002 which meant that he was a weirdly effective medium pace bowler, but a dreadful batsman. I used to bowl him right arm around the wicket most of the time, because I was a child and didn't know better.

:eng: :bwl: Monty Panesar

First-class stats: 710 wickets @ 31.36 (39 5WI, best 7/60) in 220 matches.

He had to be included.

:aus: :bat: Walter Giffen

Well that team improved a lot with its two most recent inclusions. Should be an adequate starting point by Unlucky Dip standards.

:aus: :bat: Roland Pope

Nominated by
: @Aislabie

Test stats: 3 runs @ 1.50 (best 4) in 1 match
First-class stats: 318 runs @ 12.23 (best 47) in 20 matches

I see your Walter Giffen and I raise you the team doctor who got to play for Australia by accident when the entire team walked out on the eve of the Test, and all the Victoria first-teamers were out of the state playing in a Shield game. Most of his first-class games came for the MCC, continuing in the proud tradition of fine cricketers like Benjamin Aislabie. I would argue that Pope is up there with Emile McMaster as the worst of all Test cricketers.

And the player goes to... @blockerdave

:aus: :bat: Roland Pope
:aus: :ar: Clive Rose
:ind: :bwl: Shanthakumaran Sreesanth

You're welcome Dave.

:usa: :bat: Aijaz Ali

Nominated by
: None (Reserve player)

First-class stats: 82 runs @ 20.50 (best 36) in 2 matches

There's no way around it, Aijaz Ali just looks like a cool guy. In terms of cricketing ability though, he wasn't phenomenal: across a dozen years, he played 36 times for the United States, passing 50 only once and averaging a smidge under 17. Never stopped me including him in a bunch of Brian Lara Cricket XIs though, back when I knew him only as "A. Ale".

:saf: :bat: Philip Hutchinson
:usa: :bat: Aijaz Ali

Hmmm... someone else who might be needing some all-rounders I think.

:saf: :bat: Robert Whyte

Nominated by
: @blockerdave

First-class stats: 1,877 runs @ 26.81 (1 century, best 176) in 40 matches

Now I can't be bothered to check (60 profiles like this have rather taken their toll) but I'm guessing that Whyte's sole first-class century came against AROSA Sri Lanka? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, I can't find much evidence that Whyte was an especially good batsman, and in this modern era he probably would not retain his place in a South African domestic side and would go elsewhere to find playing opportunities.

And the player goes to... @Na Maloom Afraad

His team so far:
:saf: :bat: Robert Whyte
:nzf: :ar: Kyle Mills
:eng: :wk: Rony Stanyforth
:sri: :bwl: Sridharan Jeganathan
:eng: :bwl: Mark Lawrence

I think that you could have come out of this far worse, although you're probably going to have to pick a couple more seamers and hope for a green-top.

I will throw together a draft order in a bit, but first I want to shower and eat. How do you all feel like you've done? How do you even rank teams like these?

@Bevab should not get a chance in the draft. He's got Kohli

Well I'm not sure how I how I ended up with a half of a half-capable team.
On reflection my nominations were certainly not the worst of the worst but a few stinkers have been peppered in there too fortunately :p
