Detroit Red Wings (6-1-2) v Dallas Stars (3-6-0) @ American Airlines Center

It was the Red Wings who suffered their third shootout loss of the season, after a 1-1 draw forced the two sides into overtime before, Zetterberg and Datsyuk both missed their shots, after Nyquist scored his penalty, as they went down 2-1 in the shootout. It seemed like the Wings' powerplay woes were coming to an end, as they scored their second PPG in two matches, as Franzen slotted the slapshot home, off the Datsyuk and Zetterberg assist 2 minutes into the match to put the visitors on the back foot. Dallas struck at the end of the half, as Wandell's long range wrist shot went flying past Howard, who in the form that he's been in, should have been stopping those. The Wings were unable to capitalise on numerous powerplays throughout the second and third period though, going 1/7 in the end, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw, before overtime could not separate the sides. Nyquist, who was given his first chance in a shootout, stepped up first and a good piece of work from him got him around Lehtonen, while Eriksson missed his penalty for the Stars. Zetterberg and Datsyuk failed to score their penalties though as Goligoski and Robidas stole the game from the Wings to come out on top in a very close game, and record a much needed victory for the Stars, to now go 4 from 10, while the Wings suffered their third overtime loss.

Detroit Red Wings (6-1-3) v St. Louis Blues (4-3-1) @ Scottrade Center

It was an agonising defeat for the Wings, as they threw away a two goal lead in the final period, to end up going down 6-5. Datsyuk was the star though for the Wings, putting in a goal and 3 assists, setting up both powerplay goals, and poor defense from his team let down an otherwise superb showing from the centre. It was doubles from Grachyov and Stewart though, that helped the Blues on their way to their fifth win of the season, while Detroit suffered only their second normal time loss. It took only 46 seconds before the Wings opened the scoring through Pavel Datsyuk, who capitalised on the Zetterberg rebound with a crisp snapshot. Lagenbrunner levelled things up about halfway through the first though, and at the end of the first period, the scores remained 1-1.

The second period had a frantic start, Samuelsson scoring a rare goal, as Datsyuk played a superb pass back to the right winger whose backhand shot flew past Halak. Grachyo cancelled out his goal a minute later though with a nice backhand shot, but the frantic pace of the game continued, as Brunner struck himself 10 seconds later, as Franzen's shot was blocked by Halak, only to be forced into the net by Brunner. It took until halfway through the match before the first penalty was awarded, and Detroit capitalised on their chance, with Datsyuk again playing a vital role in the goal, sliding a pin-point pass across the face and White's wristshot extended the Wings lead. Grachyov made sure St. Louis only went into the final break a goal down, as his wrist shot beat Howard.

While the Blues had two powerplay chances late in the second period, it was the Wings who were making the most of theirs, as Franzen scored for the fourth time in a row, tipping in the puck off the back of a crisp slapshot by Ericsson, Datsyuk stealing another assist as well. With a 2 goal lead, Detroit should have been able to hold on, but they couldn't, as a powerplay goal by Stewart, who was lucky as McDonald's shot deflected off him and into the net. Stewart then levelled things up with 4 minutes remaining, with a clean wrist shot, and this high scoring game was giving the fans a spectacle. Ericsson then gave away a slashing penalty with 3 minutes 15 left on the clock, and the Wings could only hold out the home side for a minute before Steen stole the game with his snapshot, to give the Blues a 6-5 win. Their 53 shots on goal, was reflected in the six goals they scored, but would count their lucky stars after a slightly unbelievable comeback, as the Wings still continued to struggle slightly on the road. An injury to Ian White also added to the Wings' woes as they now were missing Quincey and White in the defense, meaning they were missing two key defenders, although the return of Valtteri Filppula is a bonus for them.
