Kangaroos vs Hawthorn NAB Cup Round 1 match @ Carra - Queensland
Hawks upset Kangaroos on the Gold Coast
The Hawks have suprisingly defeated the Kangaroos up at the Gold Coast overnight. With the Match sceduled to be one sided affair going the way of the Kangaroos, as they are looking to bring more games to the Gold Coast in future years, but after this display against the Hawks, they wouldnt wanna come back for a while. The Hawks led from Half time until the end. The Kangaroos started the game off well, running in groups and sharing the ball around with handballs and the occasional kick.
The Kangaroos went into the match with a very young side, with the likes of, Jesse Smith, Callum Urch, Matt Riggio, Daniel McConnell, Blake Grima, Tim Hutchinson, Andrew Swallow all just playing a handful of games between them.
The Hawks went in with a young side to, but most of their players have played games before and know what its like to play Senior Footy on this occasion.
Matt Riggio will make his debut tonight against Hawthorn
The Kangaroos: They had a very poor night, they had no player that really shown for them. Jess Sinclair was the consitant player who had 26 possesions at the end of the night to his name, as he picked up 10 of those in the 1st Quarter, but he was really the only player that troubled the Hawks. Brent Harvey was good, taking 19 possesions and kicking 1 goals from Half Forward. And youngster Brent LeCras had 19 possesions and kicked 1 goal.
Drew Petrie played most of the night in the ruck, which was a different move from Laidley as Petrie was bound for the Backline this year, but played him in the ruck tonight and really played well. 23 Hitouts, 10 possesions and kicked a goal, a good night for Petire to start off. Brent Harvey was in the mix of things again, being the mastermind through the midfield, he had 10 clearence for the nigh, easily the most of any player on the ground.
Brent Harvey dominates through the midifled, while Petire gives the Roos the 1st look in the ruck
Hawthorn: Came into this match with confidence in their young side. But it was the veterans that really stood up. Ben Dixon and Joel Smith were among the bests, with Dixon kicking 4 goals at full forward and Joel Smith running from Half Back had 23 posseisons. Danny Jacobs from the back line had 22 possesions and Sam Mitchell through the midfield had 22 possesions as they were named among the bests.
Youngster Zac Dawson, who was hardly done by the opposition coaches over the past year with the lack of strength in his body, had put on 13 kilos over the summer to build himself up a bit, and what a man he has turned into. Played in the ruck against Drew Petrie, and won himself 22 hitouts and 15 possesions playing as the ruckamn and down back when needed. Tim Boyle impressed down back with the absense of Dawson, taking the bal l out of the defensive 50 on 7 occasions and Tom Murphy took the ball out 5 times. Up the other end, Mark Williams, put the ball into 50 on 7 occasions, more playing up half foprward and into the midfield instead of the Full Forward role he played mostly last season.

Brisbane vs West Coast - NAB Cup Round 1 match @ Gabba
Eagles win in close contest.
The West Coast Eagles have defeated the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in a close tight contest at the Final Siren. The Home side Lions were under pressure after there poor performace in 2005 after winning those 3 Premierships. Alot of players from those Premiership sides have moved on, either retired or are at different clubs, but the Lions have some good promoisong players coming through the ranks. Wayde Mills, Josh Drummond, Jed Adcock, Joel McDonald, Troy Selwood, Justin Sherman, Daniel Merrett, Jared Brenan, Mitchell Clark, Michael Rischitelli, Rhan Hooper and Joel Patful are the players playing tonight that the Lions are keen on making great careers. And for the Eagles, they had a more experienced looking side with Matthew Spangher, Matt Rosa, Mitch Morton, Ben McKinley all making there debuts for the Eagles tonight.
Mitchell Clark will debut against the Eagles
The 1st Quarter was an even one, with both teams kicking 3 goals, but the Lions had the advantage, with kicking a goal right before the siren. Luke Power was on fire in the eraly stages of the match, taking his oppoutuity when he had the ball in his hand, kicking the ball 22 times from his 32 possesions for the night. Power took 8 makrs for a little guy at 182 centremeters tall, was running free all night basically. Tyson Stenglein was the man that was picking him up, Stenglein got the ball alot himself, but gave away the ball to much to Power, as Power made his oppourtunity when he did have the ball. For Lions, Mitchell Clark the debutant started down Full Forward position with Jonathan Brown holding down the Centre Half Forward position, and Clark, made the position his own, kicking 4 brilliant goals on Debut. Clark was good in the air aswell, taking 10 makrs 6 of them being contested. A big man at 197 centremeters and 100 kilos, he is a force to be reckoned with.
His teamate, Daniel Merrett joined him down forward and even himself kicked 3 goals for the Lions, as they looked to stetch the Eagles defence with big men down forward with Brown, Merrett, Clark, Brennan and Bradshaw. But all that wasnt enough for the Lions
Clark in action
The Eagles just had enough power in the legs to scrap home in the end, with Brent Staker the man of the moment. Kicking the winning goal with 1 minute remaining on the clock, stabbed a short goal through the big sticks. Staker had a good night in the offense, kicking 4 goals from Full Forward, but spent most of the half in the Back Line. Andrew Embley ran through the midfield like a train, having 13 possesions, below his average of 2005, but kicked 3 goals which was important for the Eagles. Youngster Mitch Morton, the captain of the Western Australia under 18's team, was on debut, and it didnt take hime long to get used to playing AFL footy, kicking himself 4 goals on debut while having 11 possesions in the forward Pocket. Ex-Captain Ben Cousins, after horror of the field during the pre season with the law, had a good game back to start of 06 with 26 possesions playing on the Wing mainly, and into the midfield. New Catpain Chris Judd wasnt the midfielder he finsihed off to be in 05, only having 14 possesions, but might be saving himself for the future games.
Port Adelaide vs Fremantle - NAB Cup Match @ Aami Stadium
Close game, ends in Power Victory
Aami Stadium was alight. 22 and a half thousand people packed into the arena to see there beloved Port Adelaide team take on one of the danger teams for 2006 in the Fremantle Dockers. The Power came in with a very very young side with Michael Pettigrew, Troy Chaplin, Jacob Surjan, Damon White, Alipate Carlie and Jon Giles all filling the 6 back position. Adam Thomson, Danyle Pearce and Ben Eckerman took the centre line, Ebert, Wilits took the forward. Hugh Minson, Matt Thomas and Steven Salopek were through the midfield, while they had some familiar faces on the bench with Shaun Burgoyne and Kane Cornes starting there.
The Dockers had a more experienced looking team, but still had their share of youngsters, with Micahel Johsnon, Andrew Browne, Ryan Murphy, David Mundy, Ryley Dunn, Michael Warren, Robert Warnock an Marcus Drum all into the 22 tonight.
The Dockers came to Aami Stadium with a good side and were looking to snatch an upset early into the season, with Matthew Pavlich playing as a midfielder this year instead of up forward, wrote in the Herald Sun that he wants to becomine a midfielder, he has already been All-Australia in the Backline, has played the last few seasons in the foward line, he thinks that the crop of kids that are playing in the foward line, he would like to give them a chance and deliever the ball to them as they want it.
Pavlich dominated the match, 11 possesions in the 1st term just sumed it up on what night he is going to have. At the nights end, Pavlich finished with 33 possesions, 4 goals and 12 Marks, he just dominated the game. Paul Medhurst was lively in the forward line, kicking 3 1st half goals and another 3 in the 2nd half, finishing with 6 goals, the 1st player to do so in this NAB Cup. Youngster Ryan Crowley played as a running midfielder on the win, played a good game, 22 possesions and snuck forward on multiple occasions and slotted through 4 goals. And Des Headland was the same role as Crowley, being where the ball was, and himself finished with 4 goals.
Ryan Crowley and Matty Pavlich were stars for the Dockers
But it was the Power that prevailed, and it was Captain Warren Tredrea that really spured them on, not only with his own performance, but encouraging the kids aswell. From Centre Half Forward, 26 possesions and 3 goals for the big man.
Really helped out his team alot, by having 10 handballs, and only took 5 marks for the game, so most of his work was at ground level, something Tredrea has been working on, over the summer.
Big man Ryan Wilits, people havent really seen much from this kid, but played in the ruck tonnight against quality oposition, but 10 possesions, 3 marks, 1 goal and 26 hitouts isnt to bad for your 1st game. Wilits would of loved to have done a bit more but he would be happy with his debut. Stuart Dew was good as usual, 21 possesions and kicking 3 goals for the Power. But the looks of the Power they have a good bunch of young kids coming through the ranks. Ben Eckerman, Brad Symes and Toby Thurstans all chipped in with 3 goals of their own, while Michael Pettigrew was good down back taking 19 possesions.
Veterans Stuart Dew and Warren Tredrea lead the way for the Power
The M.C.G was back into play for the 1st time in 2006 with The Carlton Blues and the Melbourne Demons kicking things off under lights. A big crowd was expected to come and watch the contest, as the Blues would want to get a win on the board to start getting back their members, and the Demons would just love to beat old rival Carlton. Some new faces in the Carlton side with Jason Saddington moving from Sydney, Dylan McLaren from Brisbane and the Number 1 Draft Pick from last year, Marc Murphy were all in the starting line up for the Blues tonight. On the other side of the scale, the Demins didnt have a a young side by no means, but there were some young names amongst the group, Clint Bartram, Heath Neville, Nick Smith and so forth.
It was a low scoring affair in the 1st term, with only 3 goals being kicked for the 1st quarter, but 8 behinds being scored aswell, just shows what a few months away from the game holds with the new ball again in new compettion, its always hard to get back the kicking skills so early in the season. The Demons got going into the 2nd quarter kicking 7 goals to the Blues 3, which gave Melbourne a handy buffer at the Half. Nick Stevens for the Blues already have 21 possesions up till half time, not showing that he would stop in the 2nd half, and he didnt either, also kicking 2 goals, Stevens was on fire through the midfield, getting the ball in and under and shifting the ball to runners to kick down to their forwards. The Backline was holding up well for the Blues as there defence has been there weakness over the last few years but Bret Thornton, Callum Chambers and Jason Saddington were doing there job well for the Blues.
Nick Stevens was the star for the Blues, finishing the match with 47 possesions, just 3 shy off 50 possesions in a match which would of broken many records, and even 47 would be the highest since a long time ago, and he also finished with 5 great goals.
]
The Demons while watching Stevens roam around everywhere, were working as a team. Not many individual performances, just the basic team work they have been working on at training over the summer. Russel Robertson was giving David Teague a handful down the Demons forward line, kicking 5 goals for the match, and took a hanger in the 3rd term just before the siren. Nick Smith only had 8 possesions for the match, but went down forward at the right time and kicked 3 goals in the end, and 3 behinds, having 6 shots at goal, was a good sign for the Demons. Aaron Davey was lightning through the midfield as he said through the summer that he wants to play more in the midfield this season, and having a rest down forward, finished the match with 22 possesions.
