Tuesday 1st January
A new start to the year, a new set of challenges waiting to be attempted. The Toon New Years Eve party was great, with many people turning up, although my mind was mainly on football. We had Everton away next and had to be on our game, as they were overachieving and happened to be in 6th place before the match. Armin Bacinovic has arrived in England and will be starting our first game of the year after impressing in training. Hopefully this bargain(2k) could work in our favour and help us on our course to win some trophies.
We travelled to Liverpool, ahead of our tie with Everton. Today's game was certainly not going to be easy, as Everton have the 4th best home record. Saying that we have the best away record, unbeaten on our trips so far. So we arrived at the 10th biggest stadium in England, Goodison Park. A 40,000 seater stadium, has nothing on ours. The interior and facilities are very nice, and give everyone a great vibe. I decided in advance that Mirel Radoi would start with Armin Bacinovic, as Steven Taylor has been really poor as of late. Gabriel Torje and Lazslo Sepsi would both start ahead of the tired and excellent young talents, James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia. Alan Smith and Bogdan Stancu would both get unusual starts, putting Michael Owen and Joey Barton on the bench. Let's hope this works out in our favour(!)
The game started with Everton getting the first chance, Asatini guiding his free kick just wide of the mark. Everton continue to pile on the pressure and Yakubu is nearly through on goal, if not for the fantastic tackle by Bacinovic. After some great build up play, we get our first chance. Alan Smith on the edge of the box tries to place a shot into the corner, but Howard gets down to it well. The best chance of the half then comes up for Everton, as on the counter attack Cahill takes the ball on the edge of the box and thumps a hard low shot straight at Given, who parries straight infront of him for Mirel to whack away. Lucky! Smith then gets another chance at Tim Howard, but this time his lob is cleared off the line by upcoming talent, Joseph Yobo. The best chance of the half soon comes up with Yakubu recieving the ball from 6 yards out and somehow scuffing his shot up, giving Given a thankfully easy save. Minutes after the chance, referee Chris Foy ends the half, in which both teams had chances to go ahead, but in all honesty, Everton were the marginaly better team. Oh well, the second half is there to be won, and I am not losing my unbeaten away record now!
Half time came and I decided to try and win the game and made an attackig change, bring Sepsi off for N'Zogbia. We can't afford to drop any points today. Apart from that, nothing really to talk about as everyone is playing pretty equally, both teams having good possession of the ball, but neither getting that goal. Lets hope we can win it in the second half.
First chance, first goal. N'Zogbia, 7 minutes after coming on gets an assist. After a lovely run down the wing by N'Zogbia, a beautifully timed cross is hit, for Bogdan Stancu to volley home from 8 yards. That's the start I wanted! Fantastic. The goal lifts us, as we start playing fantastic pass and move football, and the cheeky schoolboy skills are still there. The next out and out chance comes in the 73rd minute as Margaritescu comes close at a corner, for Yakubu to run down the other end and trip himself up! Oh the irony(!). With 5 minutes to go until the end of normal time, Cahill puts Yakubu in who, fortunate for us, hits his shot straight into the side netting, not roubling Shay Given at all. 92 minutes gone and Everton make a last attempt to gtet something from the game as they change to a 4-2-4 but are on the recieving end of a beautifully creat move, finished by a Martins finish! Beautiful goal, and that wraps the game up for us. A very good win to say the least, but we could of made it a bit more appealing as we left it rather late to seal the win.
A pretty poor match to watch, but I am sure the Newcastle faithful would of enjoyed us winning this game, which increases our unbeaten run to 4 games since our loss at home to Chelsea. Bacinovic was quite impressive, being only 18 aswell. Won all his tackles(literally!) and won all of his headers(9/9) which was fantastic. The future is looking brighter and brigther as time goes by.
I'm hoping to sell some deadwood with the likes of Cacapa, Emre and Duff transfer listed, not to mention a few others. The Under-18's are doing fantastic this season also, 1st in Group 3, won all their games bar one draw Sunderland in the first game! Barkoth and Barazite both shown some real desire to go on and do well, and they also have the quality to go on and do well. Next game is our F.A Cup third round tie with Coventry City.
