The Toon- Geordie Style (It's back!)

Wednesday 5th December

I made sure training was tough this week as I increased the intensity on fitness, rather like an army drill. The boys didn't like it, good! If they start winning in style again then it will stop and we will resort to fun training, whilst improving at the same time. The balls in their court now. The other news this week is that we have been drawn to face Coventry City at St.James' Park on the 5th January in a F.A Cup third round tie. A member on Planetcricket.net, a fellow Coventry fan in fact, had this to say on the matter "****!". That speaks louder than actions in my opinion.

Forget next months cup tie, today we had the Quarter Final of the Carling Cup to play. We had an easy draw to be fair, Wolverhampton Wanderers at St.James' Park. Not only were we favourites to win this match but we were also favourites to win the entire cup. I knew this was possible! How great would a trophy be in my first season at Newcastle, especially a cup that the illustrious club has never won before! The lads morale wasn't as high as normal but I knew this was because of the training, so I was happy. I explained to them why I did it and then people were beginning to see that this meant alot to me. Team spirit was a bit higher after that but for the first time this season, I think, I started with both Faye and Beye. Even Emre started. They better not mess up!

GOAL! What a start.. Eh? The referee gave a goal for us, went to the linesman and then disallowed the goal. Well the move in itself was a well planned move with Milner passing to Emre who on the edge of the box, passed to Martins and the rest is history. I couldn't see any problems? Must of been 'offside'! Our next chance to go 1 up, comes 12 minutes later. N'Zogbia whipping a delicious ball across the box, for Martins to be denied in the air by goalkeeper Hennessey. 21 minutes in and we finally take the lead after continuous pressure.Emre again instrumental in the build up, passing to eventual scorer Barton who took a touch and then hit a sweet curling shot from 20 yards. Nice one! 9 minutes later and the fans are overjoyed as we double our lead, to bring our tally to 2-0. N'Zogbia creating the chance this time, by putting Martins in, for Obafemi to megs the oncoming keeper, to gain his 30th goal of the season in all competitions! As we look to increase our lead straight away, 2 minutes later we nearly get that third goal. Emre the man with the chance this time as he intercepted a pass from Edwards on the edge of the box, but pulls his shot just wide. Then just before half time, we get the third! Martins getting his second goal of the evening, this time from a Milner corner. A powerful header at the front post was enough to see it in the back of the net. We took them apart this half, with them having no shots, at all, at goal.

I didn't really talk to the players at half time apart from telling them that their first half display was very good and that they should keep it up. A[art form that, I just let them do what they wanted. Most just chose to sit around talking, discussing the game. From what I could gather, they were enjoying it, which is of course the most important thing in football. It's nice to win though, and I'll be damned if we are going to let this slip!

The second half was the dire-st(Is that even a word?) half we have played all season, with their only actually being three good out and out chances in the entire half. All together there were only 5 shots... even they managed two! The first chance, albeit, went to Wolves only two minutes after the restart. Stephen Elliot with a great solo run, taking on two players in the process, and then hit a powerful shot from the edge of the box, for Given to hit over. We then start playing possession football and we are then finally granted with a deserved chance. Emre picking up the ball on the half way line, put a peach of a through ball through to Martins who took it just into the box and then thumped the crossbar! Why couldn't it nestle into the back of the net? In the last 30 minutes though, we just wouldn't lose the ball. Our possession football made the Wolves players agitated, leaving them to make needless fouls. The last out and out chance of the second half came in the 91st minute. Potter with a corner from their left hand side, was met by a Freddy Eastwood header, only to see it just graze the top of the crossbar, and thankfully go over. We rode our luck a little in this half but it was rather comfortable. What a boring half though!

The lads were elated about making it to the Semi-Finals, which means we can still win the cup! I was pleased with the first half, but far from please with the amount of shots in the second half. Oh well, we didn't really need to actually do that much in the second half and it was nice to see us pick up a well deserved clean sheet, god knows how long we have gone on a conceding marathon. Would be nice for some easy games to come in now. Contemplating on what to do in training though, should be rather interesting, me thinks...

I hope we get a nice Semi-Final draw, which would of course guide us into our first ever Carling Cup Final, which would of course be great. The three other teams that have made the Semi-Final are Sheffield United, West Ham and Middlesborough. Considering we have beaten 2 of those, both being the stronger teams, I think we should win the cup. To the Premiership now where we are still top and going strong! Saturday 8th December

An important day for anyone involved with Newcastle United Football Club. Today we faced Chelsea and it was also the draw for the Carling Cup Semi-Final. The draw was exciting as ever, as Middlesborough got a easy draw at home to Sheffield United. Whilst we got the Hammers, West Ham United. That means it SHOULD be a Newcastle v Middleborough Final, which would be out of this world. Top of the table clash though today, should be entertaining and incredibly hard for both teams. We still top gracely on top of the table and Martins is still top of the Leader board for goals, and won't be moving any time soon.

Today's home game against Chelsea is a very important match for anyone, but especially for us as it could make or break our season. St.James' Park, the venue once again in which one team will flourish. I can't see neither team winning it, one team should win it. The Chelsea players and staff all came in a really expensive bus, don't know how much difference it makes but there you go! To the changing room we went, with captain for the season Mirel Radoi playing a few practical jokes. Tactics for today were going to be plain and simple. Counter attack football, but still not really letting them play. We have to keep our marking tight and not to give them space. I feel that if all these guidelines are met, then we could gain at least a point here today, and a point gained it would be.

The game started with Chelsea stronger, with them getting the first chance. Shaun Wright-Phillips with a cross which is headed away by Habib Beye, but on the edge waiting for the ball was Essien, who skied his chance high into the atmosphere. A fantastic shot from us next drew us our first decent shot of the afternoon. Some good attacking counter play by us ended with Martins picking up the ball on the half-way line and taking it to about 35 yards where he hit a banana shot of sorts, which banged the post and out for a goal kick! Brilliant strike. Finally the deadlock was finally broken. Joey Barton, the man to get the assist, picks Owen out with a lovely pass for Owen to show that it isn't all about power, as he hits a trademark finish. 1-0 against Chelsea! Who'd have believed it? Drogba and Shevchenko then play well up front with each other as they both get chances, set up by each other, minutes apart. Drogba hitting his chance well wide and Shevchenko missing his one on one opportunity. Goal, goal and goal! 3 more times before the end of the first half was the ball in the net. The first time was scored by... Michael Owen! Martins with a prolific run down the channel, ended up accidentally crossing straight to Owen, who can't really miss from 5 yards out. The second goal, unfortunately, went to Dider Drogba. A great solo effort by Didier, taking on 4 players, ended with him losing his balance and all power on his shot as his first shot is saved, but he pulls himself together and slots home the second opportunity. Then the last goal of the half went to... Didier Drogba yet again! Shaun Wright-Phillips whipped a decent ball to the front post where Drogba somehow got there unmarked, headers home for his 15th goal of the season. A tremendous match so far, but we have really let them back into it.

After a terrific half, and their goals only coming from a few errors on our part, I am thrilled to bits. The boys have really adapted to the tactic quickly and that can be proved by the first goal. Brilliant attacking play. More of the same in the second half although there will be subs made, most probably including Obafemi Martins.

Shevchenko and Drogba's great link up play, brought them to the first chance of the second half. Drogba again peeling off a pass from Shevchenko, dragged his shot painfully wide. Painful, for them anyway. 15 minutes into the second half and... PENALTY! Controversy has struck again! John Terry had tripped Obafemi just inside the box! Obafemi looks like he is going to step up and take it himself. GOAL! Martins makes it 3-2 to us, with a cool, calm and collected penalty into the bottom right hand corner. Get in! Straight away though I bring him off, along with Barton and Milner, for Margaritescu, Stancu and Damien Duff. As Chelsea attack and we rebel against them, it makes the next 20 minutes a little lackluster. Until Chelsea draw even after 82 minutes! A goal which wasn't our fault, and just a genuinely great strike. Essien passed the ball to Joe Cole, who took a touch into the box, and at an acute angel, hit it straight into the far top corner. 3-3! We must hang on now, as I can't see us scoring. Don't do this to me boys! 89th minute and Drogba has a header which grazes the top of the bar. 2 minutes added on and it's into the 93rd minute. Easy, Easy, Easy. What! No way! 96 minute is up... wait! NO! Ricardo Carvalho gets his head to the ball off a Mikel corner and at the front post heads it straight into the net! How important could this goal be?

I can't believe we threw the point away, even 3 points in some context! Joe Cole's goal was genius though, the last goal was a pile of Rubbish though. Our marking was all over the place. We didn't deserve to lose that, a draw would be probably of been fair but we defended fantastic for most of the match. We played to my tactics all the time and if it wasn't for a sensational strike and a lucky LATE goal then we would of prevailed, but it was not meant to be...

Well, with Chelsea obviously winning away at us today, they closed the gap to a mere 3 points after 16 games. Disappointing but it was bound to happen. Sunderland still sit in 19th place, as they should. Unfortunatley Manchester United still refuse to drop points, and are starting to catch us and Chelsea up. If we can keep on playing, even like this, we should carry on winning and in due time, hopefully, win the league. Sunday 16th December

Middle of December now and we are looking forward to January. Lulinha is obviously coming in July, but I'm looking to strengthen our future, and possible our team at the moment. A few players I have looked at are Armin Bacinovic(Maribor) and Pablo Piatti(Lazio). If I get them both I won't even go over ?1mil with their purchases combined! Piatti is an attacking midfielder, and is only 18. Bacinovic is a versatile defender and is incredibly cheap for his quality. Liverpool have also shown an interest in Steven Taylor... no chance Liverpool! Another small note, personal for me though, is my increasing relationship with Steve Bruce. It started with him proclaiming I was the man of the job for Newcastle and saying how he though I was going to have a great managerial career ahead of me, I responded in the same fashion. Maybe dinner round mine after the match, and possibly him sending Djourou and Muamba around to Newcastle?

Today's match was obviously agaisnt Birmingham, away at St.Andrews. Birmingham had been in poor form as of late, especially in front of their home fans, but they did have some quality. The likes of Djourou, Kapo, Muamba and Oubina to select a few, could all cause us problems. It's a decent stadium and the changing rooms were okay, nothing compared to good old St.James'. Today was going to be a big day for people like Smith and Geremi, who if both came on would need to give me agood performance, as players in their positions are playing well at the moment. Going to dictate todays game and get the win, we are!

We started a little shakey as Birmingham had a good early chance, which should of been converted. Muamba gave McSheffrey the ball down the wing and then his cross was met by Kapo's head, unmarked, but he could only manage hitting the post! Nice to have luck back on our side. Goalissimo! A wonderful pass from Milner reaches Owen, whom in acres of space, finishes the move cleanly, as we take the lead! 27 minutes gone and 1-0 up, plan is taking shape well. Straight from the kick off though, Birmingham are up in our faces and get another chance. Kelly runs down the wing and then crosses to Kapo who heads over, to end a good move by Birmingham in disappointment. Minutes later and we double our advantage, as this time Owen is the supplier. Owen received the ball from Milner, and played it just infront of the on running Joey Barton, who thumped it like Roberto Di Matteo's goal in the 1997 F.A Cup Final against Middlesborough. One more chance before thje half time though for Birmingham, unfortunately for us it falls to Fabrice Muamba, who has a decent shot non him. Luckily though his piledriver was saved by the fingertips of Shay Given. Legend! Going into half time, we are 2-0 up.

Cracking first half, although the Brums had a few chances. Kapo should of scored which would of given them the lead and we wouldn't be 2-0 up. We need to try and stop the service up to him and try and dictate the match even more, even so we played a great first half of football, long may it continue. Smith and Geremi will be getting their chacne in the second half also.

Oubina started the half well for the Brums by passing the ball to Jerome who turned and had his shot saved by Shay Given. 3 minutes later and we score... a disallowed goal. Martins recieved the ball on the edge of the box and saw Michael Owen making a run so put him through, but Owen must of been just offside, as his clean finish was swiped off the scoresheet. Unlucky. Kapo gets another chance in the 60th minute as he hits a shot from the edge of the box which Given saves, but can only parry for Margaritescu to clear off the line! Luck is seriously on our side today. Palacios then gets a chance as Jerome puts him in, for only his thunderous shot to be just over. Birmingham managed just one more chance befor ethe end of the second half as Oubina tries a pot shot on the edge of the box, for it only to nestle in the side netting. "Referee!" Red card! Franck Queudrue has been sent off for two yellows after he cropped Alan Smith and deserved his red card. 92nd minute makes it a bit unlucky for Franck but it was a stupid tackle. Smith looks okay and finished the game on the pitch.

A not so good second half from the lads, nearly let the Brummies in. We didn't really gel or play well together in the second half and didn't capitalize on our already 2-0 lead, although credit to Birmingham for not resting. Comformation from the other day's game in which Mancheter City have beaten Liverpool at home. Time to rejoice.

As great as it is that we won 2-0 away at Birmingham, Manchester United and Chelsea still ended up winnign on Staurday, which means we haven't increased our lead at the top unfortunately. The next following weeks should help us, by securing the contracts of good young prospects for the future. A good win there Jaz, against which has to be said, a strong Brum side. Well done.

You said it was a big game and it was. Sad to see you lose but if you had to lose at least you scored 3 goals. A comfortable win at Birmingham...

I havent posted for a long time Jaz but Newcastle are on a roll. You have been playing it on FM08? It would be good if this was happening in real life!!!

Well, must've been tense for you v Chelsea, unlucky to lose in the end, but you got back on track with a win over Brum
