Bit of banter here.

Who wants me to do one final last update, for old time's sake? :D

Wednesday 30th January

First signing to be made after the game was Diego Buonanotte from Argentian side River Plate. ?4,000,000 was needed to secure the 19 year old's transfer and he will hopefully pay us back by playing some great football when he is ready. We have also have had an offer accepted for versatile defender Arturo Vidal and striker Salvador Cabanas. Hopefully both will come although I may stop the transfer of Vidal as I don't know if we need any more defenders. Cabanas is a must though, then again if he doesn't get a work permit then he won't be coming. I hope they hurry that process up! In other news though the FA Cup 5th round was drawn and fate decided we would play... either Walsall or Burnley! What ever team we should get, should result in a win for us anyway so it doesn't really matter that much who we do get. The African Cup of Nations is soon going to be ending it's group stage and it seems so far that Obafemi Martins and Celestine Babayaro will definetely becoming back. Would be great to get some players back. This also could mean a vacant managerial oppurtunity as if some of the big teams get out then they may get sacked, you never know.

To today's game though and we were destined to play West Ham United in London at Upton Park. They would likely field a strong team apart from the one big absence of central defender Daniel Gabbidon. As noted in the last game against West Ham, Dean Ashton was their top goalscorer with a respectable 17 goals. 8 ahead of Craig Bellamy, who has been in decent form this year. We have already played them 3 times, once away and twice at home. 3-0 and 3-1 at home and our last visit to Upton Park, a mere week ago ended 2-1 to us. We were definetely expected to win, especially as they are only around midtable(12th) but you never know at Upton Park and West Ham have been known to be an enigma. They have been doing so well this year only because of Calum Davenport, Dean Ashton and Robert Grren but in some cases they pulled together and played fantastic as a team. Now onto the team selection. Nice to see Obafemi back today and he will definetely be starting, let's just hope he hasn't got too much jet lag. There are some unfortunates such as Bale and Margaritescu who won't start the game although Cacapa and Emre do. It is a strong Newcastle side as I know West Ham are not to be underestimated. We can win and we must.

Emre gets the game going as a speculative effort from 25 yards travels straight into Green's hands. In the same minute though, we strike as Smith puts Martins in and thanks to a deflection the ball trickles into the back of the net to put us 1-0 up! Down the other end and Anton Ferdinand has a shot from around the same place as Emre had his, but this time Anton skies his shot just high. A Martins knockdown is controlled well by Smith who turns and shoots, but his shot aswell his denied by Green. Yet another chance goes begging as Obafemi Martins finds himself clear through but thanks to a brilliant save, the ball didn't go past the line. After a Scott Parker clearance, Dean Ashton has yet another chance, although he steers his shot just metres wide of the goal. 2-0 up, 30 minutes gone. A wonderful free kick by new signing Vanden Borre finds it way to Martins who from no further than 4 yards, slots it home. West Ham then get a brilliant chance to get back into the game, as from a corner Scott Parker gets the ball in the area and fires his shot over. Will they rue missing these chances? Parker gets a through ball to Ashton but he yet again fails to find the target.

After a decent first half performance, I feel that Emre just isn't giving th emidfield... enough bite which is strange as he usually makes the midfield have too much bite. Nicky Butt will come on to sure it up and make sure West Ham don't stage a remarkable comeback. Given and the defence has been very vocal and they have so far done me proud, with Vanden Borre chipping in which a stunning free kick to pick up an assist. The midfield have been quite dominant bar a few blips and an average performance by Emre. The strikers however, again have impressed and they seem to be linking up perfectly together like a true partnership. Will I actually need any more strikers? For back up, definitely.

First chance goes to West Ham, as a corner by Modric goes to the front post but Craig Bellamy can only put his header wide and can't direct it goalwards. With no real free kick specialists on the pitch, Obafemi takes a free kick and it bangs straight of the post and goes out for a throw. Great effort! Viduka then comes on for Torje, which means Smith moves to right mid with Viduka going up front. Viduka then has a golden oppurtunity from a corner by Vanden Borre but he hits his shot straight into the chest of the outcoming Green and misses the chance. Chances, chances, chances as we get 3 chances to go 3 up but Vanden Borre, Smith and Martins all can't get it past Green and his defenders. Complete frustration! Mark Noble then has a good chance spilled as he hits a shot from just inside the box wide. Don't they have shooting practice? Gareth Bale now comes on for the tired N'Zogbia and goes onto the wing. Martins has yet again another brilliant chance to get a hat trick after a through ball by Vanden Borre, who is playing fantastic, but yet again he misses. Noble again will rue his chance as he heads over only for Wome to a minute later smack the underside of the cross bar from 30 yards to see his shot parried off the line. Chris Foy blows the final whistle.

A relitively close game there with West Ham having 23 shots and us 18. However West ham only got 5 shots on target whilst we had 13 of ours. Given was class but our full backs were awsome ie Vanden Borre and Enrique. The spine of the team was very good and the flanks in midfield were overall not bad. The strikers feeded of eachother very well and created enough chances for us to extend our lead, pitty we didn't. Martins was crucial today with his 2 goals and Smith played a part in one of them. Man of the match went to Robert Green for a sterling performanc ehowever it could of easily gone to Obafemi Martins for yet again proving his is one of the best in the business.

A good day for us as 3rd place Man United lose to 4th place Arsenal, although they have now swapped positions. Chelsea also failed to winaway at Everton as they drew 0-0 in a boring draw. Arturo Vidal is the only likely transfer to happen, although I don't really know if we actually need or want another defender to be honest. He is a great player although he only really need one more keeper and maybe 1 or 2 strikers. No more buys likely to happen this season however with Martins on 33 goals in the league, over double second place, we might not need another striker. 41 goals in 28 games altogether know for our main striker. Sure is something to be happy about. Vanden Borre seems to have been a good signing so far but only time can tell whether he really will be one of the best in the business. I am sure he will.
