January 2007 - An Overview
A sensational month was December, apart from the poor loss at home to Chelsea, we got 6 points clear at the top of the table. Porbably the best month for entertainment with lots of goals and lots of good play, we were starting to not finish the opponents off. Three 4-3 results in a month isn't too shabby at all. Our goal scoring record in the tabel speaks for itself, whilst half of those goals conceded in the league happened in that month. Let's hope January would be just as good.
Everton 0 - 2 Newcastle
A pretty poor match to watch, but I am sure the Newcastle faithful would of enjoyed us winning this game, which increased our unbeaten run to 4 games since our loss at home to Chelsea at the time. Stancu scored during normal time and Obafemi Martins added to his tally in the 92nd minute, to help us cruise to victory in the end. Most of the teams in the top 6 all won unfortunately.
Newcastle 6 - 1 Coventry(F.A Cup 3rd Round)
A fantastic first half won the game, quite simply, for us as we took a 5-0 lead at the break. Individually and as a team, our work ethic and our passing play were phenomenal. Albeit was only Coventry but they have been in great form in the Championship. Owen, Martins and Emre all scored two goals each and put us in good stead for the 4th round. Who would we get?
Newcastle 3 - 0 West Ham(Carling Cup Semi Final Leg 1)
Yet another victory, and yet another good performance. We duly deserved our win and should be happy with that performance, even if it was Owen's last one. He went in style scoring the second goal, with Martins scoring before him and Smith scoring after him. This puts us in a comfortable postition for the second leg where we can barely go wrong.
Newcastle 3 - 0 Wigan
An outstanding performance in the second half, and not just because we scored two goals but because we played fantastic football. Most of the team played great football but the flanks and strikers were sensational. Barton, Faye and Viduka got us the goals in an important game.
Newcastle 4 - 0 Middlesbrough
A fantastic Rival match with us demolishing Middlesbrough at every given oppurtunity. Stancu scored inside the first minute to give us a dream start and then Smith made it 2-0 before the break. 2 late goals, one from Emre and another from Smith gave us a great historic win. If fate is kind, we could be playing Middlesbrough in the Final of the Carling Cup. We will see.
West Ham 1 -2 Newcastle(Carling Cup Semi Final Leg 2)
The lads did me well with the new tactic I introduced to change things a little and thanks to Smith and a stunner by Vanden Borre on his debut we won the game. More importantly though, we were through to the Final in which we would face... local rivals Middlesbrough, who we have alreayd beaten twice this year. Come on!
Blackpool 0 - 4 Newcastle(FA Cup 4th Round)
Brilliant performance capped off by the goals we deserved, although we could of snatched a few more once they went down to ten men. We were expected to win and we duly delivered with Viduka netting a brilliant first half hat-trick Smith snatching a late 4th goal. Viduka and Smith played very well up front with eachother and Vanden Borre continued his strong form for us.
West Ham 0 - 2 Newcastle United
A very close game, too close in fact. West Ham had more shots than us and we both had around the same amount of possession. Martins again showed us his quality as he went and netted twice to give us yet another victory, and cap off a very good month indeed. Kudos to the man and the team. Man Utd lost and Chelsea drew against Fulham, so all the better.
A simply remarkable month and I don't really know how we can keep up this winning streak despite having an action packed January with an incredible amount of games. We had now scored over 60 goals and conceded a mere 19, which shows just how well we have been playing this season. We increased our lead at the top by one point during this month but we still have a game in hand. It is panning out rather nicely all of a sudden. I didn't get manager of the month again, sadly, only to be beaten by Arsene Wenger. Thankfully we got two awards again, Obafemi Martins and Charles N'Zogbia both impressing enough to get a very special mention. Well done lads.
