Story THE VIDEOCON CUP (India Vs Sri Lanka)

Match 3 LIVE from Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

Sanjay Manjrekar: Hello and welcome to Jaipur for the 3rd match of The Videocon Cup 2005. We are at the Sawai Mansingh stadium and it is certainly a glorius day for cricket. Typical conditions here at Jaipur - Hot and dry. The temparature might go upto 36 degrees during the day.

The pitch here is dry and dusty that will keep the spinners interested. India are without the services of Murali Kartik who has been diagnozed with food poisoning. Sri Lankan spinners will be smackin their lips to have a go on this pitch. Looking closer, we can see quite a few cracks visible.

Any score over 230 would be a handful here and the highest ever total here is 278 made by Pakistan in 1998/99. Would be an interesting toss. If I were the captain, I would want to bat first while the pitch still is intact. A look at the top scores here...

278-9 Pakistan v India 1998/99
269-5 England v West Indies 1987/88
259-5 India v West Indies 1994/95
254 West Indies v India 1994/95
251-3 India v Australia 1986/87
250-3 Australia v India 1986/87

The Toss!

Sanjay Manjrekar: Welcome back to Jaipur for our LIVE coverage of the Videocon Cup 2005. This is a must win game for the home team as they have lost the first two matches. I have here with me the match referee Mr. Clive Lloyd and the two captains Marvan Atapattu and Rahul Dravid.

Rahul to toss! Marvan thats your call!

Atapattu: Tails!

Sanjay: Tails, it is! Marvan congrats, What is your decision?

Atapattu:
We want to bat first. Pitch looks suitable for spinners and will deteriorate. So we prefer to bat.

Sanjay: Any changes in the team, Marvan?

Atapattu: No Sanjay! We dont want to change the winning combination.

Sanjay: Good Luck Marvan! Rahul you get to bat last!

Dravid: Its disappointing that we lost the toss. All we need to hope is our bowlers to click and bowl out Sri Lanka for a small total that the batsmen can go ahead and chase that.

Sanjay: What are the changes in the side, Rahul?

Dravid: We have 3 changes. Irfan and Kartik are down with fitness problems and we have brought in R.P.Singh and Sreesanth. Suresh Raina comes in for Yuvraj.

Sanjay: Whats the reason behind the omission of Yuvraj?

Dravid: Yuvi's form is a bit on the downside and he certainly needs some time to get his act together. We all know he is a fantastic player and a proven matchwinner on his day. All he needs is time to sort out things and we all could see the Yuvraj we know.

Sanjay: Thanks Rahul, good luck to you and the team. There you have it, Marvan Atapattu has won the toss and has elected to bat first. Sri Lanka have named an unchanged side, while India have made 3 changes. Gambhir will be India's supersub and Thilan Samaraweera will be Sri Lanka's Super sub. We will take a short break and when we come back, we go Live to the action.

In a must win game the new look Indian team started brightly with the opening bowlers R.P.Singh and Ajit Agarkar causing some trouble with the disconcerting bounce and movement.

Agarkar got one to rear up on Atapattu, which he edged towards the gully region. Thanks to his great form, he managed to play the ball with soft hands and that helped the ball fall short of the fielder.

The young left armer Rudra Pratap SIngh too settled down to bowl a good line and length and also with a bit of extra pace. He clocked 143 Kph with a nasty lifter at Jayasuriya which the batsman managed to duck into.

Atapattu and Jayasuriya prosper!

Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu have got their act together after a nervy beginning and are starting to play themselves in. They were quite careful in countering the initial zing of the new ball and then started to play some good shots. They have put on 40 runs in 8 overs..

R.P.Singh nails Jayasuriya!

Rudra Pratap Singh justified his selection by removing the dangerman Sanath Jayasuriya. After pegging him on the back foot by bowling short of length, Singh pushed one further up and Jayasuriya obliged by going after it and the resulting edge was pouched easily by Dhoni. Sri Lanka are 42/1 in 8.4 overs.

Jayasuriya scored 24 runs in 33 balls with 3 boundaries. Kumar Sangakkara, who is in desparate need of a big innings walks in.

Sreesanth introduced with immediate results...

Sreesanth replaced Ajit Agarkar to bowl the 13th over. The score was 52/1 and Atapattu punched the first ball from the Kerala speedster down the ground to take off for a quick single. But Sangakkara started a bit late and was comfortably beaten by Tendulkar's swift throw to the keeper's end.

Sangakkara made 8 runs off 10 balls with all his runs coming in boundaries.

Mahela Jayawardene walks in after yet another runout and yet another poor show by Sangakkara.

Adieu Atapattu!

India got the man they wanted when Atapattu tried to be a bit over aggressive and lobbed a simple catch to Sreesanth who was looming at mid on.

Rudra Pratap Singh was rewarded for his perseverance as he got his second victim. Atapattu made 19 runs from 38 balls with 3 hits to the fence.

Interesting fact to note is that Atapattu has hit the ball in the air just twice in the three innings he played and he has been dismissed both times.

Russel Arnold walks in to join Jayawardena. Sri Lanka are 3/57 in the 14th over.

R.P.Singh has picked 2/30 in 7 overs. Good stuff from the youngster.

15 over update:

Sri Lanka are a bit uncomfortably placed at 3/65 in 15 overs. R.P.Singh has picked up two wickets and Sangakkara of course is run out. India have enjoyed their best start with the ball in the series so far. This promises to be a good match.
