great story loved the idea of going against the captain except for it being Rob Key who is probably Kent's best player. Dismal one day performance though and to be honest i can't see anything other than a Leicestershire win.
With the team coming apart at the seams this match had paled into insignificance. However the skip tried to rally us up, but no one appeared to be listening. Instead David the ex-captain and present vice-captain appeared to be in control. Although Rob, set the fields the atmosphere was very tense. We all got into a huddle while waiting for the openers to appear.
"Ok guys. Let's try and leave any issues we have back in the changing rooms. There is still a bit of cloud cover so the ball should hopefully swing. I know things don't look too good, but let's put up a good fight. Everyone needs to be sharp in the field and to motivate everyone else."
We all broke apart and headed of to our positions. I was at gully. Martin would be opening and Maddy would be facing first ball.
"Come on Martin. Let's show him why he hasn't been picked for England "
Maddy shot me an evil look. I was always up for a bit of sledging. Martin's first ball was a no-ball which was a bit annoying for him. However he went back to his mark with the team encouraging him loudly. Martin came running in and GOT A WICKET WITH HIS FIRST LEGITIMATE BALL. Even from where I was I saw the ball nip back. Maddy had already begun to leave it but it came back and struck him on the pads.
"HOWZAT!!!!!!!!!!!!"
We all shouted. The umpire spent a few seconds looking and then slowly raised his finger. We had made a crucial breakthrough. Everyone came running in to congratulate Martin.
With the team so fired up after such a good start, we all expected great things by Sheriy of his next over. He did trouble the batsmen but also got hit for a boundary. Every run we let go was critical and so we had to keep the fielding very tight.
"Come on lads. We can do this. Let's show these Foxes how to really bowl."
I had really grown in confidence in the few games I had played in and it was showing. Martin was back bowling into his second over. Martin is a superb bowler and had already taught me loads in the few nets sessions I had trained with him in. He was bowling at Robinson who is a pretty average batsman.
This mediocrity showed when MARTIN GOT ANOTHER WICKET. A ball starting outside off-stump, it swung aggressively back into Robinson who completely missed it and had his peg's re-arranged. This was excellent work by Martin and the team were in a really fired up mood. The Foxes were 7/2, but Habib was in and he is a very skilled batsman who has already scored plenty of runs this season. We would need his wicket and soon.
Disaster then struck. Habib had only faced a few balls and had struck some big shots already. Sheriy had gone for a few runs and needed to get this wicket soon. Habib tried to slog him, but it went straight towards Matty at fine-leg.
"Catch it!!!!!!"
Everyone bellowed. Matty positioned himself underneath. From where I was it looked like a comfortable catch. Matty was not to near the rope and there was no sun to blind him. He had to take it.
But he didn't. It just bounced straight out of his hands and landed at his feet. Sheriy was gutted.
"It dosen't matter Matty. He'll be out soon."
The skip yelled. But we all knew that this was a big break for Habib. We had our chance and had lost it. Hopefully we would not rue our missed chance too much.
It did appear however that we would rue that dropped catch. The Foxes were going at a pretty slow run-rate but runs were still leaking away in one's and two's. At the 10 over mark, Leicstershire were 38/2, with Habib's score racing away. The skip threw me the ball. Only 76 runs were needed, so I had a lot of work to do.
"Right Tom. Don't worry too much about the score. Just concentrate on a good line and length and have a good spell."
He then jogged back behind the stumps. I only had 6 overs of bowling in the OD form, so I really wanted to improve my stats.
With so much pressure on me and with everyone expecting me to perform some sort of magical bowling spell, I was pretty nervous. Would I be able to turn the fortunes of this match or would the experienced Foxes led by Habib smash me around Canterbury?
Hey, sorry I haven't checked this story in ages, but it seems to be going along brilliantly. I see it's story of the month now! Great work, Highlander.
