Up on the balcony, we were all pretty relaxed. Batting at number 7, I wasn't expecting to have too much batting to do, and would be looking forward to impressing with my bowling even though the pitch looked like it would be favouring the batsmen. I was just sitting there with my legs over the edge of my chair, relaxing. Even though it was only April it was still pretty warm the mercury saying it was 16 degrees. Out in the middle our innings had started.
Matty had just struck a very sweet cover drive for four to take his score to 7. Gibson was bowling at him, many saying it would be his last season. A great career in my opinion. An inswinging yorker from the legend, really confused Matty and he got struck plum in front on his pads. A huge shout from the fielders and the umpire had no hesitation on sending Matty back towards the changing rooms. The skip was the next man in and really needed a good innings as so far his season had been pretty poor.
David had begun to settle himself in quite nicely now and had moved onto 16 with the score at 29/1. A short ball from Gibson, David tried to run the ball down to third man. The ball just seamed slightly and took a big edge of David's bat. It went flying towards the vacant first slip area, looking like it should be safe. However lead by example is the famous phrase and Nixon hurling himself one-handed managed to somehow hold an amazing catch.
"No way that was an amazing catch. How did he do that?"
A brilliant piece of work behind the stumps and we were now 29/2.
Things didn't get any better for us as soon after that the skip was dismissed for just 3 runs. The season so far had been pretty poor for Rob, who had been looking for an England call-up but so far had failed to impress. A slower ball by De Freitas he had completely failed to pick it up. Trying to cover drive he had just spooned it and Ackerman took an amazing catch to reduce us to 31/3 of 7 overs. We were really not doing at all well, and the few fans who were there did not look happy.
I leant over to talk to Michael while he put his pads on as he was the next the man in,
"Hey Mike. Things haven't been going too well so far. Looks like we'll probably be batting together."
"Yeah it looks that way. Hopefully Darren and Martin can get a big partnership as we have tons of time left. I didn't really fancy having to do a match saving innings on my return."
"Yeah it's not the best of returns for you is it. Bet you wish you hadn't come back."
Before he could reply there was a huge shout from outside and the fielders were celebrating. Martin had been dismissed for just 1. Looking at the replays he had tried a stupid shot and had been caught.
"See you out there Mike." I called as he left.
God, what a rubbish start by us. 31/4 on a pitch which was as flat as you could wish. Although the weather had favoured bowling this was pretty poor stuff by us. I had my pads on ready and was expecting to go in soon. The only thing I could try and do would be to just bat solidly and hope others could stick around and we could build a partnership. But as things stood it didn't look good.
