Some nice signings there. I think the youngster is a particularly good signing, its always good to invest in youths. Nice presentation mate!

I think that you paid too much for Arshavin. You should of paid £15 million :)

Newcastle end Pre-Season with 1-0 win

2d77fix.jpg

Newcastle United have finished their pre-season friendlies, their latest win coming against Reginna. The Magpies, who played four games, enjoyed scoring 9 goals, and conceding only one goal in total, as Roy Keane's side won every game in charge. The tour of Italy was enjoyable for all.

Newcastle enjoyed two 3 goal wins, one 2-0 win and in their final game, a 1-0 win. Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen, Roque Santa Cruz, Kevin Nolan and Jonas Gutierezz all scored goals in the tournament, with Obefemi Martins enjoying 4 goals in total.

AC Milan 1 - 3 Newcastle United

As Roy Keane took control of his first game in charge, Newcastle were able to score three goals within the first 30 minutes of the game, with a Roque Santa Cruz and a Obefemi Martins double gifting the Magpies a 3-0 lead. However, the last hour of the game saw Newcastle miss various chances and Milan however did get a consolation thanks to Ronaldinho, yet it was good start to pre-season, with Keane still getting to know his new players, and players even making their debut's for Newcastle.

Inter 0 - 2 Newcastle United

Newcastle scored another 2 goals in a game they dominated from the start. Obefemi Martins and Michael Owen both enjoyed more goals for the club. Jose Mourinho's men were outplayed completely by Roy Keane's side.

Udinese 0 - 3 Newcastle United

Next was a trip to Udinese, and Newcastle enjoyed another 3-1 win as Newcastle took their total of goals to 8. Newcastle took advantage as Kevin Nolan, a 10 million signing from Bolton, Jonas Gutierezz and Obefemi Martins added to extend Newcastle's lead to 3-0. A brilliant volley from Nolan was Newcastle's goal of the tour, even though Martins scored a beautiful 25 yard strike. As Newcastle secured their most impressive performance of the tour, it was good for all to see other players other than Martins, Owen and Santa Cruz getting on the score sheet.

Reginna 0 - 1 Newcastle United

West Ham ended their tour of Italy with another win and clean-sheet. Martins, as clinical as ever, grabbed another goal to extend his total to four goals. There was worry and Martins had to be substituted after suffering an injury, however club physio has told nufc.com that Obefemi Martins suffered a minor knock, and will definitely be fine.

"Overall, we enjoyed a fantastic tour of Italy. It was great for the players to enjoy Italy. We only conceded one goal, and we were able to score nine goals in four games, which against tough Italian opposition -- it's a great tally. I feel everyone enjoyed a good tour, and obviously it was a delight to see new signings grabbing their first goals for the club. With Manchester United on the 17th August, I feel we are ready, even though we may have not signed everyone we want to just yet." said Keane, speaking to nufc.com.

Michael Owen Retained as Club Captain

2ziv9kl.jpg

Newcastle manager Roy Keane has revealed that striker Michael Owen will remain his club captain next season. No matter who joins the Magpies during the rest of the transfer window, Keane says Owen, 28, will retain the armband.

"He leads by example, and that's a good way to lead," said Keane. "He's not scared to give his opinion when he's right, or to say what he feels. He has really impressed everybody. He's a tremendous professional and he trains properly every day."

Owen was made captain following Keegan's return to St James' Park in January and helped drag his side out of a worrying slump to eventually finish 12th in the Premier League.

His impact after two injury-wrecked seasons on Tyneside was such that Keane has urged owner to open negotiations over a new contract as soon as possible, with his current deal expiring at the end of the 2008-2009 season.

Owen missed Newcastle's last pre-season 1-0 friendly win at Reginna with sore calves. But he should be ready to lead his side out at Old Trafford on 17 August, when the Magpies kick off their season against champions Manchester United.

Andrei Arshavin will miss the start of the new season as he is yet to receive his work permit, while Steve Harper and Gai Assulin also sat out at Reginna with minor problems. "There's just no point risking them at this stage," said Keane.

Meanwhile, Viduka has finally completed his move to Melbourne Victory from Newcastle. The 32-year-old striker signed a four-year deal with the Australian club after agreeing the switch last month for an undisclosed fee.

Glad to see Owen as captain. A great professional on and off the field.

Come on you reds stuff the Geordies!!!!!!!!!! :p

Fantastic pre-season for the Magpies, causing many upsets. Owen being retained as captain will be a good choice in my opinion, as long as he can keep fit. Hopefully Newcastle United can keep in the form they had in pre-season and have a fantastic start to the Premiership.

Great presentation, Shantanu. Keep up the brilliant writing. :)

Manchester United 2 - 2 Newcastle United

34s4cn4.jpg

Manchester United made an unconvincing start to the defence of their Premier League title as they were held at Old Trafford by an impressive Newcastle United under new manager Roy Keane.

Newcastle took a surprise lead when Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins headed Roque Santa Cruz's cross into the roof of the net. A Roque Santa Cruz volley, then doubled Newcastle's lead before Rooney and Tevez's goals, both from six yards, leveled matters. The Red Devils had the better of the second half, with a Rio Ferdinand header hitting the post and Dimitar Berbatov going close.

Three goals in the opening 25 minutes made for a pulsating start after Manchester United had started brightly, with Darren Fletcher and Wes Brown causing Newcastle problems on the right flank. But, for all of the home side's slick passing, it was Newcastle who broke the deadlock when Martins rose above the hapless Patrice Evra to head home.

Cacapa was called into action to clear Evra's left-wing cross away from Fletcher, who was waiting for a simple tap-in, before Old Trafford was stunned into silence as the visitors doubled their advantage. Obafemi Martins got the better of Evra on the right with a surging run into the box, and his subsequent cross across the face of the goal was volleyed in by Roque Santa Cruz and he scored on his debut.

But Red Devils didn't give up as, Rooney and Tevez came to Manchester United's rescue with two goals in 10 minutes. Ryan Giggs' cross from the right fell kindly to Wayne Rooney who drilled the ball in with the outside of his boot. And, in the 33rd minute, the impressive Darren Fletcher hooked Giggs' downward header towards Tevez, who equalised with a rasping shot into the right corner.

Michael Carrick, Giggs and Owen Hargreaves all had chances to give Manchester United the lead before the break, but Newcastle remained typically resolute. Manchester United dominated the second half but lacked a cutting-edge in the final third as £31m summer signing Dimitar Berbatov was left languishing on the bench.

Ferdinand's header did beat Shay Given only for the post to come to the goalkeeper's rescue. In the 63rd minute, a fine last-gasp Fabrico Coloccini tackle prevented Fletcher from troubling Given before the Irishman was called into action to palm away Carrick's menacing 25-yard drive.

Manchester United brought on Dimitar Berbatov and Ji Sung Park as they searched for the winning goal, with the former forcing Given into great save low to his right. And Roy Keane's boys, who had an impressive per-season tour to Italy hold on to a draw at Old Trafford.

* Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
"We started really well and we conceded two goals, two mistakes, but afterwards we showed character. We were too open. We had possession of the ball but didn't make it count at times - but in light of the people we had missing, it was a creditable result for us."

* Newcastle United boss Roy Keane:
"Having gone 2-0 up to then concede two goals against them, I'm aggrieved to be honest. You need to get the rub of the green when you come to Old Trafford, possibly we didn't have that. I've nothing but admiration for the way we got something from the game in the face of a lot of pressure."

Triple Signing by Keano

2zpv9rl.jpg

Newcastle United have official confirm on nufc.com that Roy Keane have completed the signing of three new players- Russian defender Dennis Kolodin, Spain Under 17 skipper Ignacio Camacho Barnola and Bristol City striker Tristian Plummer.

Denis Kolodin, 26, has joined the Magpies for a transfer fee of 6.5 million pounds from Russian club Dynamo Moscow. Kolodin has played for a number of Russian clubs. He joined Moscow in 2205 from Krylia Sovetov and has made 89 club appearances and scored 12 times.

He was also a the member for Russia's EURO 2008 campaign where they reached the semi finals. Kolodin put some impressive performances but missed the semi final clash against Spain for two yellow cards in the tournament.Kolodin is noted for having a "foot like a traction engine" due to his consistent shooting from over 30 yards from goal. Kolodin has won 19 Russian caps and is yet to score.

Ignacio Camacho Barnola, 18, has agreed a fove year contract with the Magpies from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee which is stated to be in the range of 3-5 million pounds. Camacho made his senior debut on March 1, 2008 in 4-2 win over FC Barcelona. Since then he has featured 10 times and scored 2 times. Camacho lead Spain U17 team to world cup glory in 2007.

Tristian Plummer, 18, has agreed to join Tyneside club for a fee of 1 million pound and will increase to 2.5 million pounds defending on the appearances he makes. Plummer will join the Magpies immediately but will be loaned to Torquay United in January.

Here is what keano had to say to nufc.com: "I am delighted to sign these players. The owners have backed me with huge money and I have made the right use of it. Kolodin was brilliant during EURO 2008 and he has great ability to shoot from long range, he is also good in the air.

"While Tristian and Camacho will add youth and different dimension to our squad. Plummer has great speed and is very physical and also good in the air. Camacho is like Fabregas of Arsenal. He loves to shoot and as a great range of passing. Newcastle United have a very bright future ahead. With Newcastle United's summer signings are over."

Newcastle United 3-1 Bolton Wanderers

1zlyw5s.jpg

Newcastle won their first premier league game under Roy Keane thanks to some slack defending by Bolton at St James Park.

Fabrico Coloccini headed against the post early on for the Magpies, who took the lead when Andrew O'Brien's mistake let in Nicky Butt to fire home. O'Brien also gave Michael Owen room to nod a second goal after half-time. Ricardo Gardner replied for Bolton from close range after Ebi Smolarek's header hit the post but Xisco's sweet volley sealed victory for Newcastle.

Bolton's frailties at the back were quickly apparent here when a Kevin Nolan corner was met at the near post by Coloccini, who escaped Joey O'Brien's attention and rattled the woodwork with a powerful header. But, going forward, Megson's side are a potent force and they almost stole the lead when a quickly-taken Gavin McCann free-kick released Smolarek, whose shot beat Shay Given but was hacked clear by Cacapa.

Bolton still looked anything but solid though and another mistake, this time a heavy touch by Andrew O'Brien, allowed Nolan former Bolton player to feed Roque Santa Cruz, whose shot was tipped wide by Jussi Jaaskelainen. The keeper was relieved to see Kevin Nolan's free-kick deflected wide but made a good save to deny Martins at his near post soon after.

O'Brien's failure to deal with a routine Jose Enrique long ball had led to that chance and an almost identical scenario saw the Magpies take the lead just before half-time. This time it was Andrew O'Brien who could not clear from the Spaniard and Butt swiveled to fire past Jaaskelainen from just inside the box.

Things soon got worse for the visitors as a second Newcastle goal followed swiftly after the break. Again Andrew O'Brien was the defender at fault as he was unable to pick up Owen, who met Barton's corner with a bullet header into the net.

It looked grim for Megson, but his side did not lack spirit as they looked for a response. Six minutes later they were back in the game when Smolarek headed against the post from Johan Elmander's cross and Gardner tapped home the rebound.

Newcastle were clearly rattled and for a spell Bolton looked like they could salvage something from their evening. But the Wanderers failed to maintain their pressure and their resistance was ended with 17 minutes left when substitute Xisco crashed home an unstoppable volley after his first effort was blocked by Muamba. Newcastle fans were delighted and it was the best possible start for Roy Keane as the manager of Newcastle United.

*Newcastle boss Roy Keane:
"We scored three great goals, we outplayed Bolton, we went out there and did what we wanted to do - and that was get three points. We have made a great start to the new season draw at Old Trafford and then a superb win over Bolton at home. We have great depth in our squad plus we still have Arshavin and Kolodin to play as they will recieve the work permits very soon. Overall it was a teriffic performance by us."

*Bolton boss Gary Megson:
"You have to be clinical in front of goal - Newcastle were and all credit to them, they deserved it. We are gutted to concede two goals due to some poor defending - it was a disaster. We came back into the game but their third goal did not help. We had chances and should have taken more of them."
