Barclays Premiership
Manchester United 2 - 2 Newcastle United
Manchester United made an unconvincing start to the defence of their Premier League title as they were held at Old Trafford by an impressive Newcastle United under new manager Roy Keane.
Newcastle took a surprise lead when Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins headed Roque Santa Cruz's cross into the roof of the net. A Roque Santa Cruz volley, then doubled Newcastle's lead before Rooney and Tevez's goals, both from six yards, leveled matters. The Red Devils had the better of the second half, with a Rio Ferdinand header hitting the post and Dimitar Berbatov going close.
Three goals in the opening 25 minutes made for a pulsating start after Manchester United had started brightly, with Darren Fletcher and Wes Brown causing Newcastle problems on the right flank. But, for all of the home side's slick passing, it was Newcastle who broke the deadlock when Martins rose above the hapless Patrice Evra to head home.
Cacapa was called into action to clear Evra's left-wing cross away from Fletcher, who was waiting for a simple tap-in, before Old Trafford was stunned into silence as the visitors doubled their advantage. Obafemi Martins got the better of Evra on the right with a surging run into the box, and his subsequent cross across the face of the goal was volleyed in by Roque Santa Cruz and he scored on his debut.
But Red Devils didn't give up as, Rooney and Tevez came to Manchester United's rescue with two goals in 10 minutes. Ryan Giggs' cross from the right fell kindly to Wayne Rooney who drilled the ball in with the outside of his boot. And, in the 33rd minute, the impressive Darren Fletcher hooked Giggs' downward header towards Tevez, who equalised with a rasping shot into the right corner.
Michael Carrick, Giggs and Owen Hargreaves all had chances to give Manchester United the lead before the break, but Newcastle remained typically resolute. Manchester United dominated the second half but lacked a cutting-edge in the final third as £31m summer signing Dimitar Berbatov was left languishing on the bench.
Ferdinand's header did beat Shay Given only for the post to come to the goalkeeper's rescue. In the 63rd minute, a fine last-gasp Fabrico Coloccini tackle prevented Fletcher from troubling Given before the Irishman was called into action to palm away Carrick's menacing 25-yard drive.
Manchester United brought on Dimitar Berbatov and Ji Sung Park as they searched for the winning goal, with the former forcing Given into great save low to his right. And Roy Keane's boys, who had an impressive per-season tour to Italy hold on to a draw at Old Trafford.

* Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
"We started really well and we conceded two goals, two mistakes, but afterwards we showed character. We were too open. We had possession of the ball but didn't make it count at times - but in light of the people we had missing, it was a creditable result for us."
* Newcastle United boss Roy Keane:
"Having gone 2-0 up to then concede two goals against them, I'm aggrieved to be honest. You need to get the rub of the green when you come to Old Trafford, possibly we didn't have that. I've nothing but admiration for the way we got something from the game in the face of a lot of pressure."
