Vincent Says Cairns Forced Him To Fix Games During the Now Defunct ICL

The ICL, the IPL...international cricket and sport in general, it's such a sorry state of affairs.
The BBL, BPL, CPL and now there will be PSL. not to forgot SPL

Those abbreviations had my head spinning.
True that, just added those leagues because its not always good to pin point IPL as the league which ruined world cricket, if world cricket is ruined because of IPL then all the other leagues and boards have supported ruining world cricket.

Who says cricket has been ruined by IPL. IPL is the biggest boon to have happend to cricket in recent years. The reason I say that is now cricketers get a good salary and that means great things for the sport. Earlier money was restricted to the very top only, the best of the best got paid well and that was it.

It was hurting the game as young kids were discouraged from taking up the sport as a viable career financially, as there was always the what if he doesnt get to the top scenario. which is why so many young cricketers, around the world (there are exceptions of course), who say had the option of Cricket or Football (or another sport), went in the direction of another sport, or left sport entirely to take up more financially secure professions.

With IPL that aspect has completely changed. Even if a cricketer is half decent he can make a good living playing in the IPL (and indeed the other T20 leagues around the world). Just dont get too greedy and start fixing matches.

Financial security for the players is a must for any sport, and thx largely to IPL in conjunction with other T20 leagues, cricket players now have that. There will always be some guys in cricket like Cairns and Sreesanths are too greedy for their own good, as there are in any other profession who are willing to cross the line for a few extra dollars. There are Bankers like that, engineers like that, Lawyers like that, Businessmen like that etc, and there will some such players in cricket every now and then. That doesn't mean that in general the principle of cricketers earning more money as salaries is wrong, and I cannot praise the IPL enough for providing financial security to the players.

Yes of course all of this is facts.

However when people say IPL ruined cricket is that because it brought this new wealth to players, it made BCCI more powerful and they have no used their power wisely for well known reasons and the already incoherent international fixtures congestions and confusion got worse because the lame duck ICC before the Big 3 takeover simply don't know what do - as T20 leagues keep popping up everywhere.

Defence against Vincent

Lou Vincent is sacrificing perjury accused cricketer Chris Cairns in a bid to save his own skin and market a book, Southwark Crown Court has been told. The comment was made on Wednesday (NZT Thursday) by lawyer Orlando Pownall, QC, as Vincent went under cross examination on his third day giving evidence as the opening witness in the trial of the former world class all-rounder.

"I'm doing it for the greater good of the game," former Black Caps batsman Vincent said.

Pownall, however, had a different take on Vincent's motives.

"You're doing what you're doing for the greater good of Lou Vincent," the lawyer said.

Pownall told the court Vincent knew cricket's anti-corruption unit (ACSU) were closing in on him, after players had reported him for match fixing approaches.

Defence against McCullum

Pownall told McCullum his memory had appeared to improve over time, and the hotel incident was "really nothing, but it has become something in your mind it should never have become".

He portrayed McCullum as a successful businessman and sportsman, with a reputation to protect.

He listed his various business interests; cricket, buying and selling race horses, and exporting wine and meat to India, saying his ambition was to protect "Brand McCullum".

Coming forward to report Cairns to the anti-corruption unit was part of that, he suggested.

If McCullum was so shocked and disgusted by the spot fixing approach, why had he attended charity events organised by Cairns since, and played golf with him?

Pownall pointed out the names of Vincent and Daryl Tuffey never appeared until McCullum's third report, in February 2014 to the police, yet he had played international cricket in the same Black Caps team as Tuffey in 2009, under the captaincy of Daniel Vettori, without speaking out.

Again why is players being more wealthy a problem. Why shouldn't cricketers be more wealthy. Also BCCI has always been the most financially powerful board since mid 90s. IPL didn;t really change the landscape in that regard. BCCI was doing very well long before IPL came around.
