What makes Australia so damn good?

Let's not get to far ahead of ourselves.:p
The truth is, if we wanted to we would. Australia's only nation-wide sport is cricket, and we are the world number 1's. Soccer is relatively minor, which accounts for its status, but as it grows in popularity the standard is growing too.

Rugby is a sport dominated by two states; New South Wales and Queensland, with decent followings in Western Australia and Victoria. That's why we are always one of the best (don't talk about the World Cup, you didn't win it either!)

Australia's sporting culture, which accounts for our fitness and strength levels, is fantastic and as a result we are just very good at many sports.

Whoah- AFL is BY FAR the most popular Australia wide sport. Go to wikipedia and have a look at annual attaendences for each code. AFL is followed massively in all states- even the Lions in QLD and the Swans in NSW get crowds twice as big as any NRL team. Its huge in Tassie - they have a VFL team which is hugely supported. And the northern territory- trust me I have seen footy up there and they are ridiculously talented at the game. They live and breathe it. Cricket- nope. Footy is followed so much because its Australia's own national sport- Australian Football League. Its everything that Australia represents- mateship, sportsmnaship, all-round athletism, loyalty, never-say-die. Cricket is big but look at a WA v's Vic game you might get 1000 people. AFL: West Coast v's Melbourne at Subiaco game: sold out weeks in advance- 45,000 people. Two Victorian teams play; Carlton v's Geelong sold out members only 90,000 people. Test match Aus v Sri Lanka 5,000 people.

The membership waiting list of the West Coast Eagles is so long there is a waiting list for the waiting list...

Allot of clubs / rep teams in Australia in any sport are based on politics and allot of talented individuals are overlooked as the coaches usually pick who they know and don't really take much notice of who they don't know. People who get opportunities get them from 'who they know', not 'how good they are' because 9/10 they're are people who deserve opportunities more then the guys who actually get the opportunity.

So in reality, Australian sport could be allot better then it is.

Politics exist everywhere. Not only in Australia.
