BUMP! I think this seems more possible now than before but its still not 100 percent

I think he will be able because hes become more experience and might have learned that you have to be patient in test cricket.

yes. now he's performing well in odis. so he should play well in tests as well..

In the past he has been rather ordinary in tests, but his last boxing day was a great innings, he showed some real maturity that has continued in his FC cricket of recent times.

I would not discount him, but it's very much a maybe.

If he keeps being selected he'll play some decent innings because he's too good a player not to. I'm a little sceptical that he's really worth all the faith the Aus selectors have placed in him though when there are several other better-qualified (as batsman) candidates in better form around the fringes of the team too (Katich, David Hussey, Di Venuto off the top of my head).

Obviously it's his bowling that's kept him in the team (with his undeniably excellent fielding also possibly a factor), but is it really that viable a weapon at test level? It's decent enough in ODIs where the batsmen have an imperitive to score quickly and so are more liable to make mistakes, but in tests the batter can wait for the bad ball which will inevitably come. I just don't think he bowls enough genuinely wicket-taking deliveries for it to be ever anything more than fill-in level in tests.

His bowling wouldn't keep him in the ODI team.

Not on its own, no. I reckon it's a serviceable 5th option in that format though, especially as he can turn (ha!) his had to offies too. I just don't think its worthy of the faith the Aussie selectors seem to have placed in it in tests.

I doubt even the staunchest Symmo advocate would say he's genuinely the sixth best batsman in Australia.

Let Hussey open and bat Watson at 4 then. Shane Watson has test cricketer written all over him imo and i'd love to see him and Symonds in the same test team.

I think Australia now thinks that after how Flintoff performed in the 05' Ashes it is important for Australia to have a solid allrounder, whether that be Symonds or Watson.

After seeing his consistency in the recent ODIs in India I would say he now has the temperament to make it. He will feel like he belongs in the Test side now so he could convert his ODI form to Test.

He's by far a more mature and better batsman these days. And a test spot whould be automatic for him these days.

I Do not think he has the technique or temperament to be a test player.

Of course he does.
Now, even in ODI's he stil plays a batsmen innings early on but he just starts pressing on with it earlier than most batsmen would becaus he bats down the order! He has to start hitting!

That is a load of crap. The 2nd best one day player in the world doesn't have technique or temperament to play test cricket. What about last year at the Boxing Day test match. Australia 4 for the not much then he comes in and plays the best innings of his career. Now that is temperament.

He is not the second best odi player ,you cant judge players by rankings,
he does not have the technique to play test cricket and one innings does not change what i have seen of him,odi cricket is differnet though and he is good in that.
