Windows 7 keeps freezing at the desktop

I think the partition where Windows 7 is installed is named C: by default.

Yea your default partition can be anything but Windows sets it at C: as default

The boot loader is on your old hard drive I think.

So you had a vista/xp installed on your old hard drive, then got a new harddrive, and installed windows 7 on that in a dual boot?

I think you'll need to make the windows 7 boot the active partition, or something along those lines

OK - thanks for that. So, if I make D:\ the active partition, will the boot loader go on D:\ as well? Also, does D:\ have to be formatted before making it the active partition?

Just had a long chat with Intel advisor - he doesn't believe it's a CPU problem as if it was, the system wouldn't boot at all - he doesn't think the old HDD or Win XP is causing a problem either. He's going to think about it and consult colleagues to see if they have experience of this problem and call me tomorrow.

System's been fine over the entire weekend though.

Edit: He mentioned something called 'TuneUp 2010' - if it does it again, to d/l and run the trial version of that.

I'm not the best to talk to about this, but I think this is what has happened:

You installed Vista first on your original partition. You then got a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 on that in a dual boot config. Because Vista was there first, the bootloader that you use to select your OS is the Vista bootloader, as it is the active partition. If you make Windows 7 your active boot loader, it will then use the WIndows 7 boot process. You shouldn't have to do anything but change them around. You may need to insert your Windows 7 cd to repaid the boot loader however. It may not start up.

You will want to wait for sohum or someone else to reply though. I don't know much about computers.

As I said, the system has been OK for a few days now, but ever since updating the BIOS, the CPU fan seems to be stuck in top gear - it's not the GPU fan; I tested it using the manual fan control. It's rather annoying - is there any way to return it to normal?

I've never, ever, ever heard of such behaviour in case of a failing CPU. When a CPU fails, its generally only BSOD's or stuff like that, due to mis calculations etc. Lock-up's just don't point towards a faulty CPU, especially ones this irregular.

It might very well be the Hard Disk. My own PC has been behaving similarly over the past few days and my HDD is slowly dying, it sucks to be honest, getting it replaced again and again even if its in warranty.

I had a long chat with an Intel rep and he is certain it isn't the CPU - as the damn thing actually boots up; I had my doubts as well - I know that if the CPU isn't playing ball, then nothing will work. Regarding the fan, I found some software on the disc that came with the mobo that allows automatic control over the fan - so that problem is solved. The Intel rep wasn't able to come up with what could've been causing it, but he doesn't think it's the HDD. Finally, the system has been fine for nearly a week now...

Edit: I wonder if the fan was incorrectly configured in the BIOS - leading to the freeze ups? I really don't know - and as long as it behaves from now on, or only does it very occasionally, then I don't care either. See, when I first got the system home, the freeze ups were happening several times a day. After the first BIOS update, that dropped to once a day and after the second BIOS update + installing the fan control software (crossed fingers, touch wood, throw salt over left shoulder) it hasn't done it at all. :)

Edit: @KI: Surely if the HDD was unhealthy, the Disk Manager would indicate it?

Anyway, thanks for all your help. :)

Hmm kinda, look at the S.M.A.R.T values of the HDD. You can use SpeedFan for this purpose, it can do a detailed analysis of the data and tell you if the drive is failing. :)

Does anyone know how to speed up shut down process, my laptop takes 20 minutes to shut down :laugh

Uninstall everything you've installed in the past but don't need/use anymore. They clog up your system and slow it.

WTF?

Click Start, type msconfig, look at what all services you're running in at startup, and look for services which are not Windows based, and you don't use them anymore. Disable them.

Look at the Startup tab as well, and see what all programs you running.

Have you been changing AV's too in the past?

It might be due to network connections.. Disconnect any network drives, and if you have something like hamachi installed, disable it and try.
