Windows 8

Yep it shows all the programs, readme, uninstall etc just like you would find in the old start menu just it isn't in folders. Also Windows 8 had this feature you just had to click the all apps button not you just click that down arrow or swipe up with touch screen.

If it's not in folders, how are they distinguished? There must be 10 uninstall.exes for 10 programs. Surely, it doesn't list all of them together?

They are distinguished by the name of the program/application (as shown below in aussie1st's screenshot).

People can use the Start screen (i.e. the Tile screen) as their Start menu but I wanted the entire list of programs to appear when I hit the Start button, and adding all programs to the Start screen is a pain stakingly long process. But if you go through the process, the Start/Tile screen can be a much better Start Menu than the Apps Menu.

Right click all the programs you want, when you're done, click the 'pin to start' button down the bottom. Easier than when you had to do it one at a time to pin to the taskbar/favourites from the start menu in Windows 7.

I did prefer how Windows 8 put newly installed apps on to the start screen by default - as removing what I didn't want is easier than adding what I do - but the way 8.1 handles it is just fine.
