CARLING CUP THIRD ROUND DRAW​

Carling Cup holders Tottenham have been handed a tricky draw home to Sheffield United in the third round. Last season's runners-up Chelsea travel to London arch rivals Fulham, while Manchester United face an all-Premier League tie with Sunderland.

League Two side Rotherham are at home to Hull City, while Shrewsbury will face another League two side Wycombe. Liverpool travel to Portsmouth and Arsenal play West Ham, with ties to be held in the week commencing 26 September.

Tottenham face a tricky task if they are to repeat their triumph in the competition, with their tie being against the top team at the moment in the Championship. West Brom against last season's semi-finalists Everton is the other tie involving two top-flight sides.

Stoke will also face Premier League side Man City after knocking out another Premier League side Middlesbrough. Huddlesfield, who beat Bolton at the Reebok in the second round this week, face a trip to play Southampton.

Battling Liverpool peg back Anderlecht

Liverpool maintained their unbeaten start to UEFA Champions League Group E after the English Powerhouse came from behind to earn a point against their Belgium counterparts.

In a breathless game that flowed as freely as the beer , the visitors took the lead midway through the first period as Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano inadvertently flicked Bart Goor's long-range free-kick into his own net. Liverpool responded seven minutes into the second period, Dirk Kuytl powering in a header to secure a point which keeps his side second in the group.

Anderlecht had stated their intention to bring a positive result back from Anfield, and made a start almost as bright as their violet away strip. An injury doubt prior to kick-off, Goor showed exactly why Ari?l Jacobs was willing to wait before making a late decision over his fitness as he inspired the visitors. The Belgian's set-piece prowess is well-documented, but Liverpool failed to read an eleventh-minute free-kick from which Nicol?s Frutos's header brought an instinctive save from Pepe Reina.

Liverpool also had their muse back in Ryan Babel and, despite having only played 70 minutes this season, the Dutchman's verve was evident. A deep free-kick created an early opening for Fernando Torres but the Spanish failed to keep his header down, while Babel's understanding with Fabio Aurellio down the left led to both testing goalkeeper Daniel Z?tka. Liverpool, though, failed to heed the warning signs, and paid dearly 25 minutes in. Another set-piece just inside their half gave Goor the chance to fire goalwards and on the edge of the area Mascherano ducked too late, the ball flicking off his head and finding the bottom corner with Reina rooted to the spot. Torres almost replied instantly, Z?tka turning his low drive aside, before the Liverpool striker muscled his way in front of Olivier Deschacht to meet Steven Gerrard's searching cross, only to head narrowly wide.

Liverpool emerged after half-time with renewed vigour, and but for an excellent Z?tka stop Torres would have brought them level after Babel's delightfully-weighted pass. The impatient home fans did not have to wait long for their side's enterprise to be rewarded, Steven Gerrard breaking down the right and picking out the unmarked Dirk Kuyt who headed beyond Z?tka before he and his team-mates engulfed Kevin Keegan. Liverpool's defensive problems are the coach's main headache.

In the closing stages, Carragher could have grabbed victory for Liverpool but narrowly failed to get a touch on a Steven Gerrard free-kick. At the other end, Mat?as Su?rez might have swung it Anderlecht's way as he again broke free in the closing stages and touched the ball round the advancing Riena only for Skrtel to clear the danger and ensure each side left with a point.​

SCOLARI AND GERRARD SCOOP MONTHLY AWARDS​

Chelsea boss Luis Felipe Scolari has been named September's manager of the month, with Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard named player of the month.

Chelsea won all of their four matches this month, including the 4-1 success over Arsenal which has taken them to the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea head the table by two points over defending champions Manchester United. It is the first time the new Chelsea boss has won the award.

Gerrard scored five goals in two matches in the month, two coming in his side's 3-3 draw at Old Trafford against arch-rivals Manchester United and a hatrick in the 4-0 hammering of West Ham .

The Kop are placed at sixth position in the Premier League table 5 points behind leaders Chelsea but they still have two games in hand to take the lead.

As well as the crucial win away to Arsenal, Chelsea won 1-0 at Portsmouth, 3-0 against Stoke City and 5-2 against Wigan.​

MAN CITY 0-1 LIVERPOOL​

Steven Gerrard continues his outstanding scoring form as Liverpool send Manchester City in the bottom three in the Premier League table. After Robinho missed an early header, Liverpool's defence stifled City who struggled to create chances.

Late in the first half Fernando Torres might have given Liverpool the lead, but his curling shot was narrowly wide. Just past the hour the Liverpool striker made up for his miss by cleverly laying the ball into the path of Gerrard who rifled the ball home.

Given the game attracted over 47,000 people, City will be disappointed they so rarely tested the Liverpool keeper Jose Reina. Pablo Zabaleta did provide some early impetus for City down their right with a couple of promising runs. Gareth Barry curbed the first of those thrusts and then Jamie Carragher had to come across to block the second.

City's point of attack switched to the left and Martin Petrov deceived Giorgas Seitaridis to swing the ball into the penalty box. Robinho managed to get in between Carragher and Barry to reach Petrov's cross, but the City striker's header lacked direction.

Early in the second half Robinho tried his luck with a shot, an effort that had Reina scampering across his goal to save. While City employed width, Liverpool deployed a more narrow approach in the opening period, trying to play their way through the home side's defence.

But despite enjoying plenty of possession they struggled to create chances for Robbie Keane and Fernando Torres. Keane did manage to find his striking partner, but Torres' attempted flick lacked sufficient power. Just before half-time Torres burst into the box, turned inside Richard Dunne, only to curl his shot wide.

City were quickly back on the attack, Robinho riding a succession of tackles, before Giorgas Seitaridis ended the City striker's run. Five minutes into the second half Liverpool manager Kevin Keegan withdrew Keane, introducing Dirk Kuyt in an attempt to bring more width to the Liverpool attack. Keane seemed flabbergasted by the switch, shaking his head at his removal as he walked to the bench.

The change gave more penetration to the Liverpool attack and just past the hour the visitors took the lead. Gerrard exchanged passes with Torres before firing the ball past Joe Hart with a superbly-taken shot. With 10 minutes to go Ryan Babel replaced Fernando Torres, who is now without a goal for 4 games.

In stoppage time Valeri Bojinov's shot was bravely blocked by Skrtel as Liverpool held on to claim the three points.
