Bayern Munich 0-0 Liverpool

Determined Liverpool hold Bayern Munich at bay

Michael-Rensing-sch_184468g.jpg

Bayern Munich were left to rue a series of missed chances as Liverpool FC made an impressive UEFA Champions League start by holding their German hosts to a goalless draw in Group B.

Despite creating a string of opportunities throughout the 90 minutes, Bayern Munich were unable to break down their determined English visitors with Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski and Luca Toni all failing to convert when well placed. Liverpool proved well-organized and hard-working, and rightly celebrated an impressive first appearance in the competition under new manager proper when the final whistle confirmed their point.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Bayern were on the attack almost immediately and had to wait only five minutes for the first openings. Luca Toni's header from a Bastian Schweinsteiger's cross was deflected wide and the resulting corner, taken by Podolski, brought another opportunity as van Buyten headed past the post. Liverpool were unmoved, however, and carved out their first chance soon after as Steven Gerrard found Robbie Keane in space in the penalty area but the striker sent his shot over the bar.

That proved to be a rare Liverpool attack as Bayern continued to dictate the pace in the Allianz Arena, Toni, Lukas Podolski and Tim Borowski – replacing the injured Sebastian Deisler in midfield – all coming close inside the first 20 minutes. The best chance fell for Podolski just past the quarter-hour as the German international escaped his marker to meet John Arne Riise's penetrating cross, only to steer his effort wide of the near post.

The home team continued to try hard to break down the visitors' resistance but the competition specialist managed to keep their goal intact in spite of several further first-half scares. Ten minutes before the break a perceptive Martin van Bommel pass found Schweinsteiger in the area, but the shot was blocked and it was from an inadvertent effort that Bayern Munich came closest to breaking through in the opening 45 minutes, John Arne Riise's misdirected left-wing cross bouncing off the crossbar. Klose's subsequent inability to reach another Riise centre summed up the home side's first-half frustration.

Visiting coach Kevin Keegan decided to make his first change of the evening at the interval, Ryan Babel coming on for Javier Mascherano, and the change almost paid off five minutes into the second half when Babel broke into the area on the left and forced Munich goalkeeper Micheal Rensing into his first save of the evening. With Muncih still pressing for the breakthrough Jurgen Klinsmann decided to replace Luca Toni with Toni Kroos and the substitute nearly made his mark four minutes later, Riise picking him out inside the penalty area but the midfielder's aim was too high.

With time running out, Klinsmann opted to replace Klose with Ribery but as time ticked away Bayern Munich increasingly ran out of ideas and grew increasingly frustrated by the visitors' resilience. Redemption beckoned when Borowski released Ribery with a perfectly weighted through-ball, but the French international hurried his shot and fired wide, summing up Bayern Munich's night.

Looks like Liverpool frustrated Bayern. Right thing to do looking at their attacking prowess and the fact they were playing at home.

My pace is definitely a strength,
I'm not bad at dribbling with the ball either.

My heading isn't the best, I'd like that to be improved.

My all time hero would be Robbie Fowler.
In his day he was simply the best striker of all time.

Scoring for the England Under 19's against Austria.

Lowlights
Luckily there haven’t been too many so far.
Let’s hope it stays that way.

Toughest opponent
When I played for the Liverpool reserves I had to go up against Toure of Arsenal.
He was playing right back and I was playing left forward.

Best player played with
Definitely Jamie Carragher for the Liverpool against Preston NE. Would love to start alongside Gerrard and Torres

Biggest influence
Would have to be my parents.
They've always been there for me.

MAN UTD vs LIVERPOOL Preview
15th September 2008

Champions Manchester United host fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday, live on Skysports 1.

It is one of the most intense battles in football and, despite being so early on in the campaign, defeat for either club could prove detrimental to their Premier League title aspirations for 2008/09.

The challenge of achieving success weighs heavy on shoulders of the away team and, more specifically, their new manager Kevin Keegan, who has failed to record a league success over United during his time.

Liverpool have been in top form this season under new manager King Kev while rivals Manchester United had a mixed start to the new season.

The Reds recorded back-to-back successes over Hull City, Sunderland and then a convincing one against West Ham united a week ago.

United on the other hand have a mixed start to the new season as they were beaten by Blackburn on the hoping day, butt since then they have been supreme by defeating Man City and Middlesbrough.

Keegan has been handed a major boost ahead of the fixture with the news that duo David Silva and Dirk Kuyt have both been passed fit to face their nemesis.

Former Aston villa skipper is set to play as left back instead of Fabio Aurellio and David Silva will be coming in the midfield of the strong Liverpool side.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has major injury boost as striker Wayne Rooney has recovered from his knee injury in time and may start from the bench with Tevez and Berbatov starting in attack.

Ferguson will hope to have Paul Scholes available after the midfielder's recent ankle problem, but Michael Carrick appears unlikely to be fit after he suffered a recurrence of a knee injury prior to the defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

Man to Watch: Steven Gerrard

Prediction: 1-1

I agree with that prediction. Also good to see both sides have some key players returning after injury. Carrick is useless so it is actually good for United that he is not playing.

How on Earth is Carrick useless? He's one of the worlds best passers. I think Utd will edge a close encounter 1-0.

I feel he is massively over-rated. His passing is usually sideways rather than forwards, and he seems to be more of a lamp-post than Lampard. Hargreaves is more dynamic.

MAN UTD 3-3 LIVERPOOL

_45121668_rooney_getty.jpg

Wayne Rooney came off the bench to snatch a draw as Manchester United and Liverpool contested a six-goal thriller. Rooney finished calmly from 12 yards after Liverpool, who twice came from behind, had taken the lead. Manchester United went ahead when Dimitar Berbatov headed home on 11 minutes, but Steven Gerrard cut-in to level on 35 minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo restored the lead with a second-half free-kick, but Robbie Keane headed home moments later before Gerrard scored his second with a low drive.

The draw was probably a fair result, yet both teams will wonder how they did not pick up all three points from an open match. Manchester United twice took the lead, yet they threw it away, while Liverpool will wonder how they did not close out the game out after doing all the hard work in twice coming from behind. The United team sheet was slightly chnged from the last game they played as O'Shea replaced Evra and Vidic was replaced by skipper gary neville in the centre of defence alongside Ferdinand and Brown occupied the right back position.

And Cristiano Ronaldo, the match winner on that famous night at Old Trafoord who scored an hatrick against Keegan's Newcastle United, almost earned the Kev's ire again, racing onto Wes Brown's long ball only to be superbly tackled by Daniel Agger. Liverpool started solidly, but, as befits a team playing away from home with only one forward, created little in the early stages. And, when United took the lead in the 13th minute, they broke the length of field.

Tevez won possession in his own box then, as play passed through midfield, charged down the left wing before receiving the ball and firing in a perfect cross that Berbatov flicked home. Liverpool were rattled and Giggs and Ronaldo both nearly profited from the visitors' profligacy, easily picking off wayward passes but firing their shots too close to Pepe Reina.

But despite a disappointing start, Liverpool showed great composure to level on 35 minutes. Man Utd lost possession cheaply in Liverpool's half and were made to pay as the ball was moved quickly to Gerrard. The attacking midfielder ran at Neville, easily cut inside the centre back and fired under Van Der Sar with the outside of his right boot. Liverpool were the better side until half-time but Man Utd took control again after the break.

Anderson, on for Giggs, won a free-kick 25 yards out in the 47th minute. Liverpool opted for a partial wall and paid for it as Ronaldo smashed the ball home. The visiting team then went up to the other end and equalised. Keane bravely won a header and, with the United defence backing off, Silva fired in a low shot which Van Der Sar could only parry upwards. Keane, charging through on goal to follow up, made no mistake.

Liverpool took the lead for the first time on the hour - and again Van Der Sar was at fault. Gerrard and Torres combined with a neat one-two, but although the Englishman's first-time shot was powerful it should never have been allowed to fly in at the near post.

Ferguson threw on Rooney and Park Ji Sung and the gamble paid off when Wayne Rooney equalised on 74 minutes with virtually his first touch. Again the defending was sub-standard as the England star was left unmarked in the box and he calmly stroked home from 15 yards. Rooney could have scored the seventh goal of the match a minute later. Again he was given too much space, but this time he shot narrowly over from 22 yards with Reina desperately flinging himself across the goal.

The Spanish keeper was called into action again on 88 minutes and almost made a complete hash of it. There appeared little danger as a cross flew into the box, but his weak punch was from the Van Der Sar copybook and deflected narrowly wide. With injury time up, Liverpool made one last break up-field, but were wasteful with a free-kick in a good position.

*Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson

"Its rare to see six goals scored at Old Trafford and among them three are from the visiting team. Our defence was poor today. By taking the lead twice we should have concentrated more harder and not let the lead slip. We had some last minute chances which we wasted and well at the end both sides deserved a point from this game."

*Liverpool manager Kevin Keegan

"Old Trafford is one of the toughest place to come and score. But I think that if you are a manager you are not that happy at conceding three goals. I think it was a good game and both teams had the chance to win it. It is good to see our team play good football but we had to defend better. I'm very happy for Steven Gerrard, he is in the best form of his career and has scored in each match so far this season."
