Jayawardene by a long long way. He's consistent in all forms of the game, bats beautifully, and on top of that is a fantastic captain as well.

Mahela by a long shot. Younis is inconsistent as is the Pakistan team but seriously speaking Mahela is a better batsmen.

jayawardane

lack of test matches will go against yk just like almost every other pak batsmen

Jayawardena.

Mahela is a better batsman, I think that they are equal when it comes to fielding but Mahela is a better captain.

Jaya. Younis plays and misses a lot when he bats.
Are you serious? I never see Younus Khan miss the ball to be honest....

And I vote Younus Khan, and heres why -

Mahela Jayawardene's average in England is 42.85. Younus Khan's average is 52.22 in England.

Mahela Jayawardene's average in Oceania (New Zealand & Australia) is a paltry 31.20. Younus Khan's average in Oceania (NZ & Australia) is 53.90.

Jayawardene's aveage in Asia is 58.72, compared to Younus Khan's 55.01.

As it shows, Younus is more likely to succeed on a bouncy pitch or a seaming track than Mahela Jayawardene. While both are good players, I'd rather have Younus in my team if we're playing in England or NZ or Australia, but Jayawardene if we're playing in Asia.

That is all regarding test cricket by the way.

As far as ODIs are concerned, I would again back Younus Khan.

Both players have poor averages in the one day game, but Younus Khan comes back on top in the seaming pitches arena.

When the opposite team has won the toss, and sent them in (Sri Lanka / Pakistan), Mahela Jayawardene averages only 22.55.

However, Younus Khan in the same scenario averages 33.66 in such a situation. When a team wins the toss, and sends the opposition in, it is probably a very decent pitch to bowl on, where there is seam and swing.

In South Africa, Mahela Jayawardene averages JUST 16.60. Compare that to Younus Khan's 26.00, which is still not impressive, but far ahead of Jayawardene.

The other thing to take note of is for some inexplicable reason which surprised me was Jayawardene averages just 28.41 in Pakistan, coming off of a tournament which had the flattest pitches known to man.

In Test Cricket, I would comfortably back Younus Khan. In one day cricket, its a tough choice between Younus and Mahela, but I would again back Younus Khan.

Zmario you make a very compelling argument but I would say that for the time being Younus Khan is not as good as Mahela because under pressure Mahela is much more calm because in many test and odi matches Younus isn't the one to stay till the end and try to win the match...yes he is 1 down but he still isn't as good under pressure as Mahela also when you talk about stats how about these stats

Last year

Mahela Jayawardene 982 runs in 8 matches and 11 innings with an average of 98.2 also he had 5 hundreds this is test only

Younus Khan 525 runs in 5 matches but played 10 innings with an average of around 50 also he had 3 hundreds in test only

Yes when you look Younus has played 3 matches less last year but he only played 1 less innings. I know Younus is a fine batsmen but last years work of Mahela Jayawardene was fantastic....this year he has gotten a bit of a slower start but he hasn't played terrible not saying Younus has either but I mean Mahela was one of the best batsmen last year and there is no doubt that he is a better TEST batsmen

But in ODI cricket it seems as though both of them have very similar stats and that its a close run between these two

I have no doubt that both of these batsmen are great but if you want to talk who is greater its Mahela for me but Zmario has his own opinions so I respect that

wowowow

ballers man

younis khan is a cool and calm player, do u see the pressure getting to him? no u dont, he always calm

Jayawardene. He's a more complete batsman and is able to put on those colossal scores in test matches, and also play according to the situation in ODIs.
