Ravichandran Ashwin wraps it up with a double-wicket over to complete a thumping 65-run victory as Punjab Kings slump to their third successive defeat.
Delhi Capitals were powered to 272 by strong top-order performances, and fifties from Rinku Singh & Ravichandran Ashwin before eventually being bowled out in the final over of the innings. Trent Boult made early inroads by getting rid of Jonny Bairstow, but Punjab Kings' efforts of capitalizing on this breakthrough were neutralized by Ravikumar Samarth and Joe Root. Joe Root freed his arms with a 46-ball 49 before being run out by a direct hit from Deepak Chahar, missing his fifty by just a few inches. Venkatesh Iyer seemed to be in quite the mood before his boisterous knock was cut short by Baba Aparajith. Rinku Singh scored a relatively quickfire fifty to provide solace during Varun Chakravarthy's spell in the middle overs where he ran rampantly over Priyam Garg and Sanjay Yadav before eventually getting the better of Rinku Singh as well. Ravichandran Ashwin played yet another invaluable knock with the bat, scoring almost exclusively alongside Delhi's tail to add an additional 99 runs across four partnerships which rescued Delhi from an unimposing 173, and took them to a formidable 272. Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball picking-up 4 wickets in his 10.0 overs, which was followed by Baba Aparajith and Trent Boult, both of whom claimed 2 scalps each.
Punjab Kings had the perfect start to their chase with captain Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad racing to a 100-run stand for the opening-wicket. However, Punjab's overly aggressive approach eventually backfired when Ruturaj Gaikwad tried to slog Sanjay Yadav and missed the sweep, getting trapped in front for an lbw. Punjab's middle-order faltered for a second consecutive time with Steven Smith, Jos Buttler, Tim David (making a return from injury) and Hardik Pandya adding a grand total of 33 runs combined. Shikhar Dhawan saw Delhi create a chokehold over Punjab's middle-order with their spinners exploiting this dry wicket to the fullest right before his eyes, but he himself fell to a pacer, not before playing a stern knock of 83 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin went wicketless until (what turned out to be) the final over of the game and Rashid Khan returned figures of 1/16 in 6.0 overs, but it was definitely Sanjay Yadav's game with the ball as he bagged 4 wickets, which included the names of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jos Buttler, Hardik Pandya and Baba Aparajith. The latter in the aforementioned list of Sanjay Yadav victims sauntered along for a while, and with Deepak Chahar by his side, but to an ultimately defeated result. Ravichandran Ashwin wrapped up the innings by picking-up the last two wickets to fall, giving Delhi Capitals a thumping 65-run victory over his former team, Punjab Kings.
