Thursday 18th August

Packing day, I woke up late and immediately realized I had 8 missed calls from Innes. I thought this was a bit weird and when I rang he asked if I fancied a net session. I decided it was the wrong thing to do and for the second time in two days rejected a chance to play cricket.

I put my clothes, accessories and other stuff in my bag and got my cricket stuff sorted. I am using a Newbery Mjolnir bat, White Albion helmet and Newbery SPS pads and gloves. After spending the day packing and watching re-runs of the 2005 Ashes I decided it was time for some fresh air and rang innes back asking if he still fancied a net. He accepted and said that he would bring along Tom Baker as well. I didn?t mind and before I knew it we were having a laugh at Easton Nets.

Innes? bowling is coming on a treat and although I realized he was disappointed not to be selected in the side as an opener he had good swing and a fair decent pace. Tom also played well showing me who was boss when he was batting. He picked my wrong-un twice and bashed both over my head to send me running. I finally got revenge bowling a little flatter and catching him out of his ground. Overall it was an awesome session and now it?s less than 48 hours until my first game of cricket in Scotland.

Cricket tour tomorrow YES!!!!

Friday 19th August

Nothing really happened today, slept until 4 in the afternoon and then had to go round to Suren?s for the team meeting. We were all there at 5 but Tom Carr was late and so we were held up. Then Suren decided to drone on about how we needed to play to the best of our ability for half an hour. By the time Louis arrived and told us to go to the bus it was a joy to get away.

It was a good trip and was a time to talk about cricket. Me and Tom Baker talked about the standard of the tournament and I was shocked to find out that Scottish International John Blain was playing for Nairn CC and Australian under 17 Batsmen Vilen Sithloo was representing Edinburgh south for our second fixture. I was further excited to find out Jeremy Bray was opening the batting for the Southern Highlands in the opening game tomorrow.

Overall it was an awesome journey which included Opening batters Suren and Sarvesh singing renditions of the Indian national anthem and songs about Sachin Tendulker and the 20/20 World Cup.

Match day and I woke up with more butterflies than a sanctuary(bad saying I know). The game came about quicker than I could realize and it felt like seconds after I had woken up we were in the changing room and Sarvesh and Rossco were stretching up. Mat Baker had his pads on and we were all listening to Suren talking about being ready for every ball and taking catches etc his normal pre-match ramble. I was much more interested in the game and thinking that I would be on the same pitch as Jeremy Bray in only a few minutes. The only disappointment was Rameez and as we went onto the pitch I could see he was annoyed about his injury. He tried to persuade Suren and Louis to let him play but when he picked up the bat you could see he was struggling to play a simple defensive shot. So we went out with hopes high on a beautiful Scotland ground against what looked to me a very strong Southern Highlands team which included world cup player and centurion against Zimbabwe Jeremy Bray.

Lunch and a bit of disappointment, after so looking forward to see Bray bat I was sick of him after 10 overs. His pure class with placement and timing meant that he sailed through and took apart most of the bowlers. He scored an awesome 121 unbeaten from 142 balls scoring at an awesome pace and really batting well on a hard flat pitch. A few positives came from the innings though and Rossco bowled good quick tight lines taking 2 wickets both top batsmen the numbers one and three. Innes bowled awesome and although batting 11 he made up for it with swing seam and consistency. He took two wickets and went for only 16 runs from 10 overs being the star player of the innings by all accounts and was congratulated by all for bowling so well. Sarvesh bowled well keeping it consistent and was very unlucky not too pick up a wicket. He went for 38 from 8 and bowled well on a hard pitch for the pace bowlers.

The other spinners Connor, Kieren and Ross all bowled at a mediocre level and although Connor got a wicket the general performance was very mediocre. None bowled consistency and although it may sound selfish this is good for me as it will give me more overs in later games. I on the other hand bowled as well as I have done all season. I bowled a good line and although the pitch was not turning I managed to get a bit and even troubled Bray in the middle of the innings. I picked up two wickets both with wrong-uns and both caught. The first edged to Baker who took a sharp catch behind the stumps and second Suren who took a diving catch away from him to take number 4 and what looked like a quality batter Jack Cardy.

The fielding was tight and we played very well. Baker played well behind the stumps and managed to take one catch and stood up to all spinners and innes. Suren led the side well in the field and we all were enthusiastic and looking awake and ready. Overall 238-6 from Southern Highlands was a score we could defiantly chase. It was going to be up to the batsmen now and on a flat hard pitch with a quick outfield it was going to be an interesting contest.

What a lunch, we had a cooked meal in the great hall and it was awesome. I turned down the chance to have a beer and so did most of the side although I saw Innes helping himself to one and when I asked he said ?I?ve done enough for today? and with 2-16 that?s enough for me to be honest. Suren and Sarvesh sat quietly and although they have opened time after time I was certain they both looked very pale. After about 40 minutes of lunch Suren, Sarvesh, Tom(Carr) and I all went to pad up and Suren was talking in Sarvesh? ear about taking every run and taking your time etc more typical Suren banter.

So 28 overs later and Suren and Sarvesh have played amazingly, they have played every shot in the book, hit the ball all over the park and hit 8 sixes between them. Sarvesh first has hit 4 sixes in his 72 and has batted so well. He got forward well and took the attack to the bowlers from the first over. His extravagant drives over the infield forced Highlands to push the field back so Suren and Sarvesh could pick off singles without a worry.

Suren scored the best century I have seen in my life and it?s the reason we play cricket. He didn?t make a mistake and although he scored 101 from 108 he still respected the bowlers and just hit the bad balls and picked the gaps. He was only dismissed when Sarvesh called him through for a single and Bray just managed to get a direct hit. It was a close call and although I thought it was out Suren defiantly didn?t and I could see he wasn?t happy.

No time to worry because I was in. And two balls later?Damn Sarvesh bowled for 72 and the pressure on me. Then a second blow and after watching the first 7 balls and playing sensibly I was caught in front by Henry King and got a duck from only 8 balls, a huge disappointment to my opening batting performance of the tournament in Scotland.

With 3 wickets gone for 0 runs we had the pressure on needing about 100 to win, when I returned from the changing room we were back on top with Tom Carr and Arslaan Khalid smashing the bowling all over the place. They put on 66 from 56 balls and won us the game easily by 7 wickets. Tom hit 40(38) and Arslaan 26(18) with the two playing an awesome game.

Although this is a positive way to end the first day and a very enjoyable game for all, I was happy with my bowling although my duck was not good. Suren came up during the after game celebrations and said that I had got my bad scores out the way and just to keep my head up. So with the day gone there was no need to award man of the match we all new Suren and Sarvesh deserved the prize. Maturity and Technique was shown by both and they both played to a very high level. I personally think Innes deserves congratulations for an awesome bowling performance and a show of integrity after being moved down to 11. Congratulations to all and only 4 more wins to get to the final!!!!
