2011 World Cup Pre-Event Discussion

I agree with the promo not being that catchy. I clearly remember 2003 and 1999 having a lot more buildup than this World Cup. Can`t believe that we are just a month away from a World Cup being hosted in India. There was clearly more excitement with a month to go for the World Cup in 2003, even if it was not held in India.

I`m wondering why Pepsi or some of the global sponsors of the event do not come up with ads like they did during the FIFA world cup where they got all the big stars together in one ad. Something like Sachin,Dhoni, KP, Lee, Ponting, Smith and Co in one ad would just be great to build up the event, similar to the Pepsi ads which featured Henry, Messi and Co in one ad during the FIFA world cup.

mclovin you think you can find me these, i tried searching on youtube and i kept getting the '11 one.

here's a good example of excellent advertising

Ya, there are not there. I've looked too. That Ashes promo is kool.

Yes, those WCs definitely had better build up. I can still recall some of those promos from 99, and 03. They had at least several player vs player promos, which are ALWAYS funny and catchy. Fans inventing ways to go to WC, doing funny stuff.

Subcon should never hold anything big and International. They aren't just professional enough.

That is such a stupid video.

This one was sweet, for the 07 WC.

Mild overhyping of turning pitches during the world cup

Of late ive seen alot of non SC teams stressing & trying to base their squad selection over the fact that alot of turing pitches will be seen during the WC. Which IMO based on the ODIs ive seen in IND especially over the last decade, such pitches have hardly been present as it is in test matches.

I fully expect slow turning pitches to be present in Sri Lanka & Bangladesh, since that would be SRI & BANG palying to their home strength. But just using the ODIs ive seen in IND during all of AUS successful ODI series wins in 1998, 2001, 2003 TVS, 2007, 2009, 2006 Champions trophy. Plus ENGs ODI series in 2002, 2006, 2008 & the last 3 IPL tournaments. The pitches in IND where most of the WC matches will be played are mainly flat batting beauties, that turn minimally.

Of course a dustbowl somewhere can pop up in IND in some match, but i think teams may be fooling themselves to think that what all the pitches will be like that.

You might be right and my impression is pretty similar to yours, but the Indian selection looks like it's expecting spin. 7 specialist bowlers with 4 pace vs 3 spinners and their all-rounders: Yusuf Pathan, Raina, Yuvraj, Sehwag are all spinners too. So India will only be playing 3 pacers maximum, maybe only 2. That's a lot of spin overs.

I would be surprised if India plays more than 2 medium pacers in a single WC match. Spin is going to be the key, not just because of the turning pitches that could be expected, but because in the subcontinent, spin can strangle the batsmen who might get off to a flier start against the pacemen due to the ball coming onto the bat easily. Spin will make life tough for the batsmen due to the pace being very slow, and that more than the turn off the pitch will make an impact.

Yeah because of this spin factor it will be hard to judge that how much a team will get because spinners can turn the game at any time on these pitches and also they just dont pick up wickets but slow down the run rate.so many times we have seen that Asian Teams turning the game after 20 or 30 overs and i think it will be a good contest because if you look at top four spinners now a days then 2 of them are asians(bhajji, murli) and 2 of them are from eng(swann) and sa(botha) so you cant say that only asian team will have the advantage of good spinners.but anothor thing that makes asians a bit favorite which is their batsmen show more resistance against the spinners compare to non asians

Yeah, that is good. Sachin seemed to be the best of the lot, followed by Shakib.
