2011 World Cup Pre-Event Discussion

Was it required to mention Sachin there? India will win the WC, Sachin won't. He will just be a part of the victory. Such comments are very annoying.

He clearly indicated Wankhede, Mumbai and you must know that Mumbai is crazy after him.

I was watching the last ODI between India & South Africa the other day & i thought commentator Mike Haysman made a very interesting point. He suggested that maybe the due factor in the night matches during the world cup (mainly the matches in IND), might cause spin bowling to be ineffective.

Not much of a problem on Indian grounds from what I've observed but Bangladeshi grounds are a big problem. Batting second always wins it.

Yes India will win the WC (if they do), but think about it frankly, the media will be all over the place about how it will be Sachin's first WC win, how it will be Sachin's final WC in his career, etc. Sachin is India's biggest ever sporting hero, and I dont mind people giving more importance to Sachin winning the Cup because Sachin and India are the same.

Hi guys - on a side note - where is the best quality HD live streaming of the world cup going to be?

Is willow.tv any good? I am currently in Toronto, Canada and ATN really sucks

World Cup 1996 Semi-Final- India v Sri Lanka.

The spin factor will win the Cup this time round. Pace will not be much of a worry. The spinners can wrest the initiative in the sub-continent. Also, do not expect your front-liners to be damaging, the new comers and part-timers will wreck havoc here.

Not yet announced. But, I am guessing that you can watch the matches live on ESPN Star's website.

how i would love west indies to pull out a surprise. :) unfortunately in reality they dont have the bowling to do anything atm.
I still support them.

But i hope South Africa win it this time, because They always makes it to the semi Final and i have no idea what happens to them when they reach it.

Best luck to all the teams, it's going to be a good contest.

Yeah the Proteas will reach the semis again. If they don't choke, the rain will stop them. :p
Actually RSA and NZL are the only two nations to have never advanced beyond a World Cup semi-final, would like a final between these two sides.

I'd also like a new champion this time round. 9 World Cup have so far yielded only 5 Champions, there is a potential for 3 teams to get their hands on the trophy for the first time ever.

Things have changed & teams have gotten more accustomed to Indian conditions since 1996 though.

In all the ODI series AUS have won in India since 1998, spin again wasn't such a major threat. Given the pitches usually aren't a spinner friendly as a test match pitch. Usually alot of flat batting decks are seen.

Hell even in the last 3 IPL tournaments, it was a similar case.

So i personally as i've said before sort of think all this talk of this being a world cup where the spinner will wreck havoc is bit knee-jerk.

Is there a way to use statsguru to see what scores have been like in the SC over the last 2 years in ODI's? It's just that I have a hunch that neither bowling - pace or spin - would be at distinct advantage and it will be a batting paradise.

Who are your four favorites for Semifinal Spot? Mine are South Africa, India, Sri Lanka and Australia. England may also make it at cost of any of the four but I think Sri Lanka will be the team to beat in WC. Dark horses for this WC will be Pakistan. No one is expecting anything from Pakistan this time around at home or abroad. This may work to their favor IMO.

Check here

And yeah you're right spin has very little effect on the pitches at SC, specially India but it would be really effective in matches played at Bangladesh & Sri Lanka.

Bowling Records @ India

Bowling Records @ Sri Lanka

Bowling Records @ Bangladesh

These stats clearly show that spinners aren't much effective in India as in other parts of SC like SL and BD.

It's hard to predict - anything could happen once the QF's start as it will be do-or-die situation. And cos the last few ODI series have been so close - Eng vs Pak, Pak vs SA, Sri vs Aus, Ind vs SA ... Any can make it to the semi's, which is why this WC is so exciting.

As for my prediction, might go left-field and predict it will be SL, SA, Aus, Pak
