2011 World Cup Pre-Event Discussion

My predictions for the World Cup quarters is as follows:

1. India v New Zealand/Canada
2. England v Pakistan
3. South Africa v Australia
4. West Indies/Bangladesh v Sri Lanka

By the above logic, there is an excellent chance for either of Bangladesh or Canada to enter the WC semis,if they can upset a major nation.

And yeah you're right spin has very little effect on the pitches at SC, specially India but it would be really effective in matches played at Bangladesh & Sri Lanka.

These stats clearly show that spinners aren't much effective in India as in other parts of SC like SL and BD.
Good research & given most of the WC matches will be played in India. As ive been suggesting teams are being a bit knee-jerk in the squad selection by believing this will be a spinners WC.

Here are my predictions:

England and South Africa won't make it past the quarter-finals.

The semi-finalists will be Australia, India and Sri Lanka, as well as one of New Zealand/Pakistan/West Indies.

Bangladesh may provide a surprise or two, but none of the non-test playing nations will do anything of note.

Just wanted to know, Is this the first World Cup where most of the teams have equal chances of winning it and there is no favorite or dominant team going into it?

Gonna be a cracking world cup.

----------

I might just go to Semi Final 2 which will be in Mohali if India makes it. Even though I have a board exam on that day but it will be finished in 1 hour (Phy edu) so I have to go directly to stadium after exam through bus (which will take 2 hrs from Ldh to Mohali). It will be icing on a cake if India win that match because I can happily enjoy my birthday next day. Who cares about Maths exam if it is on next day and on WC final? :p

Only a dream now, just hope India reaches semi final and has a match on Mohali and fulfills my dream.

I think, India-South Africa-Srilanka-England would make it to the semifinals.
All top teams looking balanced and has performed recently.

The beauty of this WC lies in the return of the knockout stage. Thats where, one simply cannot predict a winner. The better team of the day goes through.

Bangladesh will reach the semis this time, hopefully.

For all you know, they have a good chance at the Cup as well. Compare them with the 1983 Indian Cricket team. No one expects them to win, but they can pull surprises on their way.

Bet for an Aus-Ban final with Ban coming out as the victors.:D

Spinners don't have to be taking wickets to be effective, if you are going for 40 from your 10 overs when you team is conceding 300+ then you are doing well.

If you change the stats to sort by economy you will notice a lot more spinners are in that list. In comparison the only pace bowlers that are near the top are the ones that were the best in the business for economy such as McGrath and Pollock. Compare that to the spinners and you will notice a lot of part time ones are in the list which shows its a lot harder to score of the spinners compared to the seamers. Given the effective wicket taking ability of the seamers compared to the spinners is equal, being more economical gives spinners the edge.

I think in SC its not just about containing because today teams can easily score 8-10 Rpo in last 10-12 overs if they have wickets in hand.Thats why most pacers don't have good ER(in SC) so taking wickets in middle overs will be more important than just going around 4-5 rpo, which might be little difficult for spinners especially on most Indian tracks.

It will depend though on teams how and when they use spinners, Using them to stop run flow wouldn't be good unless they keep chipping in with wickets from other end. So it wouldn't matter even if spinner went for just 40 in his 10 but team conceded 300+.

Pressure from the spinner can lead to wickets at the other end or even wickets for the spinner themselves. Also if you don't have the spinner in the side then you won't have him being able to take wickets in the middle overs anyway. Also as I said the seamers and spinners have very similar wicket taking rates in India but the spinners are more economical so what makes more sense wickets with poor economy or wickets plus good economy?

And of course having a bowler keeping it tight is going to help. Take out his 40 odd and replace it with a 70 odd and you are chasing 330 instead of 300.

I don't think so. "Dream with your heart, but bet with your head." Many people did it the other way round and are now homeless. :p

My Prediction for final is :

India v Sri Lanka
the other two semifinalists will be England and Australia ..
