2011 World Cup Pre-Event Discussion

WI probable Squad: Lionel Baker, Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh Jr, Sulieman Benn, Dave Bernard Jr, Tino Best, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Jonathan Carter, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kirk Edwards, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Jason Holder, Anthony Martin, Nikita Miller, Nelon Pascal, Kieron Pollard, Kieran Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shane Shillingford, Devon Smith, Gavin Tonge, Devon Thomas.

I guess Shillingford wont be participating since he has been banned from bowling in international cricket. Its tough picking the 15 man squad that will go to the subcontinent. As long as Tino Best doesn't make it I will be happy.

My 15
Chris Gayle
Adrian Barath
Shiv Chanderpaul
Ramnaresh Sarwan
Darren Bravo
Dwayne Bravo
Darren Sammy
Carlton Baugh
Kieron Pollard

Devendra Bishoo
Sulieman Benn

Kemar Roach
Jason Holder/Tonge/Baker/Rampaul
Andre Russell
Kirk Edwards

If they want to make room for two spinners then they might have to open with Chanderpaul. He has done it before in the subcontinent alongside Gayle and it could work this time.

still no JT or Edwards

na they have been left out. Taylor was picked in the Jamaican T20 squad for the Caribeban T20 but Edwards wasn't for Barbados.
I'm not sure why they couldn't name Taylor and then if he does good in the T20s they could select him for the Sri Lanka ODIs.

New Zealand's 30 man squad has been named:

Brent Arnel, Hamish Bennett, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Daniel Flynn, Martin Guptill, Jamie How, James Franklin, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Andy McKay, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Shanan Stewart, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Luke Woodcock, Reece Young

Adam Milne's selection smacks of desperation. He hasn't even made his List A debut yet ffs. I can see it now though, he's a couple of good 20/20 performances away from the ODI team and he's a couple of good ODI performances away from the Test squad. Joke (Although the test matches are played before the ODI's so we should be safe)

How Trent Boult hasn't made this squad staggers believe, espeically when guys like Bracewell, Milne, Bennett and Arnel are cracking the team.

I can kinda understand Arnel over Boult, but not the others. Especially, as you pointed out, how Milne hasn't even made his OD debut.

I'd guess

Brent Arnel, Hamish Bennett, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Daniel Flynn, Martin Guptill, Jamie How, James Franklin, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Peter McGlashan, Andy McKay, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Shanan Stewart, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Daniel Vettori, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson, Luke Woodcock, Reece Young

But Bennett might sneak in over McKay

Looks a good ODI squad, good to see Wade is getting a look in as I reckon he should be the backup keeper. So going by that squad:

Locked in
Ponting
Clarke
Watson
Hussey
Haddin
White
Johnson

All but locked in
Smith

Batting contenders (2 of)
Marsh
Voges
Christian
Hopes
Hodges (Still not likely given the selectors track record)
If we want a backup keeper then:
Wade
Paine

Bowling contenders (5 of)
Lee
Tait
McKay
Starc
Harris
Bollinger
Hastings
Siddle (Shouldn't be picked but probably will)
Doherty
Hauritz

Pakistan cricket board are trying so hard to get ICC's nod for Kamran Akmal's selection. I don't know what makes them think that bloody crook is of any good to the team.

Imran Tahir is eligible to play for south africa (he will even be considered to play in the odi series against india), but does he have a chance to make it to the wc team?? i remember he did not feature in the 30 players list. Can the SAF board include him in the 30 man squad?? or is it too late to do so now?

Sri Lanka: Jayasuriya, Vaas out of SL World Cup squad | Cricket News | ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 | ESPN Cricinfo

Id say the more surprising selection was not Herath being picked ahead of Randiv. But Mendis being picked ahead Randiv IMO.

Ye thats what i was thinking.

Randiv being left out at all is just puzzling tbh. He's a fantastic LOI bowler.

Ye son was brilliant in AUS. Sometimes i think Sangakkara & SRI selectors over-rate the ability of mendis.
