2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup - Australia

ODIs will come back post this edition for sure. They are a cross between what the purists want and what the spectators crave for.

I like the expansion here, however, not a big fan of the current format.
A. It's too long and one can lose interest.
B. There will be quite a few inconsequential games played.

IMO, the format used in the first ever edition in 2007 was the best. Either that or use the one currently used for the U19 CWC. That way, the expansion has a bit of value as all teams play in the main draw as opposed to a qualifier.
Completely agree!

Teams that have qualified take their heart and sweat to get there...only to play in another pre-qualifier.

For the ODIs, you're right. It is an identity crisis, but with T20 becoming mainstream ODIs should just be played in World Cups (and domestic to prep)

I’m more interested in the T20 World Cup after this one where we’ll finally abolish the qualifier part that takes place during the tournament and have it in the format of other sports with their regional qualifiers while the main tournament is just the World Cup. The only issue I can see is certain regions having more spots in comparison to others who might deserve it more but it should overall raise the standard of the tournament.

I saw someone involved with/a fan of Dutch cricket complaining that Canada and PNG will get a free pass to the next T20 World Cup but one of Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands will miss out.

They've got placement in the 2022 = qualification, which I think is good. Then regional qualifiers, which in theory is good - even the football World Cup Italy, the European Champions, are missing out.
I do think qualification by T20i ranking is rubbish because I have no doubt in my mind the larger teams will rig it so it's virtually impossible for a smaller nation to rise up high enough.

The thing is, T20 is a fickle game. On a given day, anyone can trump the other. We have seen a number of 'upsets' in this format and it is largely due to the fact that the game progresses at an advanced level here.

I agree with the point on Regional Qualification, much akin to what FIFA has in place. People will argue though that football is different. However,in my opinion, we are dealing with cricket at its basic level(T20), wouldn't read too much into it tbh

The fixtures of t20 world cup is quite boring, like 6 teams in a pool, and still only 2 can qualify for knock outs. Either they did the quarters or the round robin table. Don't you think the fixtures like these makes too many dead rubber matches in group stages?

Wonder what your suggestion is?

Well, they've copied the format from the 50 overs game to ensure all full members and TV rights holders are happy.

Having said that, the format that'd work the best for the expanded WT20 is the one used in 2007. To make it interesting, allow only one qualification. Else, use the ones used in the U19 CWC and head straight into the knockouts

I really like the format used for 50 over World Cup Qualifier 2018.
10 Team :right:2 groups of 5 :right: Top 3 to super 6 then top 2 in Finals
Place off matches for other 4
An expansion of it to 16 team will be good

I would love to see the 2007 ODI World Cup format used for the T20 WC actually. Has the potential to knock out a few sides if they’re complacent in the first group stage and ensures that four associate teams still get a minimum of three games against full members. It is also fairly long to ensure that the broadcasters are happy.

I don’t see it working under the current situation of too many bilateral T20Is though. Cut down on that and then the T20 WC would be more meaningful with this format. Right now it feels like everyone from the ICC to the Turkey Cricket Board see T20s as nothing more than a cryptocash cow that must be milked hard before it inevitably crashes.

The best formats are the ones where the ICC see there being no money in it. See anything with associates or women playing.

I've never been a fan of in-tournament qualifiers. Either give the associates the same number of matches as the full members; or don't have them at all. What is this middle-of-the-road bullshit???

So that they can prance about claiming that the World Cup has ‘x’ many countries participating disingeniously to broadcasters, fans and everyone else.
