I feel like England think about how many they can score rather than how long they can bat. It doesn't always work, but there's no reason you can't score more when there's four fielders out as opposed to five.

It feels like they’re approaching the problem as “if we score a six from every ball possible we’ll get to X” rather than “if we score 10-15 runs every over for the most part we’ll get to 400 plus safely”. When it comes off it is spectacular but I’m not sure it’s been working as often in the current WC cycle.

They've been the strongest team in Powerplay 2 (I think, sure I saw a stat on that) and if you do most of the work there you need to do less work with more fielders out.

Score at 7s for 30 overs means that 70 in the last ten would get the same as scoring at 6 for 30 overs and then scoring 100.

Bangladesh have done well to be fair. I was thinking 375 would be a winning score for sure but we might not even get there. Feel like this is where we miss Stokes who does know pace his innings differently.

I’m not doubting their capability in general or the strategy of going hard in the second powerplay. It’s just been slightly ill timed intent from everyone after Root. Feels like they looked at Malan and Root batting freely and said “I want some of that” from ball one rather than realising they got to that stage after getting their eye in. You wouldn’t need the same amount of deliveries to get set but you can’t expect to get going right away as that just risks giving away momentum to Bangladesh.

My one message meant England fell short by 86 and Malan by 60! BD needs Mehidy and Shakib to fire in order to win this- going to be tough against Wood & Co.

I feel like Mushfiqur has a key role to play as a finisher. Him and Hridoy are the only ones I can see going big towards the back end of an innings unless Litton goes crazy up top.

No disrespect to Bangladesh (and @icyman) but I think 364 will be enough.

If there's one thing more predictable than #PakistanGonnaPakistan it's that England will lose momentum in the last ten.

But the last 4 batters have scored (collectively) at well above a run a ball. It's kind of like the test though, are they going to win more matches playing this way or should they follow the traditional way of doing things?

Shaheen is bowling with a swollen finger. Gutless captaincy to not rest him

Think they had to include it because of the political reasons as @icyman mentioned.

This is sport. Not parliament.

Shadab with a wicket off a long hop!! Again if Pakistan win everything will be covered up.

I don’t think it’s as radical of a tactic anymore in ODIs as other teams have already adopted elements of it. India ditched their main opener from the last decade with a record of showing up in ICC tournaments who would have also helped with the lack of left handers in the team because he can’t play that way and have opted to play the next opener in line in the middle order for better balance. Australia have turned their middle order steady eddy bloke into a hard hitting opener and would have even converted their star opener from the last decade into a number four accumulator for the same reason. South Africa are playing in a similar manner despite having only six batters of note in the XI and New Zealand have been slowly getting there too with an emphasis on batting depth.

It’s also a bit tougher for England to reach the heights of 2016-19 with this current batting XI when comparing the personnel in the two sides. I still think they could have scored 400 today if Buttler had given himself an over or two extra to get his eye in instead of going for his swat and hoick from the second ball. No doubt he thinks and justifies it with the rationale of “we would have scored 450-500” if it had come off but beyond NRR reasons there really isn’t a need for that. As you’ve pointed out even the current target should be a steep chase for Bangladesh and something approaching 400 would have been much worse. It’s easier to get them to crumble for a much lesser total with that 400 target for the NRR boost rather than try to aim for 450+ but at this stage I’m heavily theory-crafting.

I don’t agree with the inclusion either, just pointing out why it would have been included ahead of the likes of Mohali or Trivandrum.

More long hops!

I am one of the biggest supporters of continuity and backing of players but at this point Shadab playing is either a captain/management being stubborn or just hading out favours.

Just look at every ball in these 3 overs.

Yeh, other teams have caught up and adapted to suit them. Whereas with England it feels like they are to trying to recreate the magic of that four years. And the answer when it goes wrong is just go harder.

No Morgan, no Stokes, no peak Roy this is a weaker and more inexperienced side. I've always said that top six from 2019 is England's all time XI top six, they were that good and all pretty much at their peak.

Edit - with all that being said England have scored 364 at a ground that Bangladesh (twice) and Afghanistan have struggled on.

It does indeed feel that way. This post is absolutely spot on.

Hridoy is being wasted by the current management. Hope some changes are rung in post the WC.

Babar does have his favourites if @CerealKiller is to be believed. Time for Usama Mir IMO.

Case in point, Fakhar and Imam being in similarly bad form, but the better ODI player being dropped, and Babar's U19 buddy staying in

I don't think I have seen worse captaincy so far this WC. They've got long off and deep extra but the bowlers are going on bowling long hops and Babe is refusing to put a deep point.

Shadab has bowled full tosses, half volleys or long hops. He bowled one good ball with a change of pace in his last ball of the 4th ball and the batter was beaten all ends up.
