WHAT THE almighty tweak! :facepalm:facepalm

Saqlain Mushtaq comes in for Nawaz and Hanif Mohammad comes in for Miandad. Rest will remain same. Don't know how to improve the batting, Imran usually used to win matches on his own with a little assistance from Miandad and Inzy never used to score less than 50 in 2 consecutive matches but things look quite different here. The deadly pair of the two Ws isn't working as well and Saeed Ajmal's master, Saqlain ain't doing no shite. :facepalm

So we did take 'em apart. Brilliant batting by Gilly & Mark Waugh. They almost single-handedly won it for us. South Africa had no clue against Warne, as is the usual.

I'm still pretty surprised they played a second string side against us. No disrespect to Amla, Kirsten & Boucher, but one does not simply leave out the likes of Barry Richards, Mike Procter and Graeme Pollock when you're pitted against a full-strength Australian legends side.

You do realize Ambrose has the company of Garner, Holding, Marshall, Sobers and Constantine here.

They'd be pretty tough to face but I doubt they'll be as threatening as they were back in their day. English pitches are a great deal flatter and batsman friendly since the 2000s, and you know what happens in cricsim. Also, Constantine & Sobers aren't in the same league as the 70/80s quickies with the ball.

You must be really silly if you plan to drop someone like Miandad after just one bad innings. He is the best batsman your team has ever produced. And it's not like you're playing him in a very good position either. He might have averaged over 60 at No 3 in real life, but that doesn't usually have much of an effect on cricsim where he's rated somewhere in the mid/late 30s. Also, not every league manager is crazy enough to go through extremely detailed career stats of players and rate them realistically based on batting positions.

Someone like Yousuf or Hanif Mohammad, the renown ball eaters would be more useful at No 3. Try playing Miandad somewhere at 4/5 instead. You're more likely to see him perform like his real self from one of those positions. That's what I've generally found after simulating hundreds of matches on cricsim over the years, and that's only counting the ones I've posted on this site. The real number is far, far more and I'm not even sure if it's in the thousands.

Certainly not that threatening but given that they were premier wicket takers and they will bowl at #5 and #6 there is no real need for them to be as good the other four to be honest.

Miller's replaces Mark Waugh despite that brilliant performance of his against RSA. I reckon he's the ideal chap to face up to WI's deadly new ball bowlers even though I don't remember catching him open for Australia in those old scorecards. He's fought bravely in World War II and been in some really life threatening situations, yet always kept his cool. So he ain't afraid of nothing. Still love this epic quote of his - "Pressure? There's no pressure in cricket. I'll tell you what pressure is? pressure is when you are flying a Mosquito and there's a Messerschmitt up your arse!" :D

Time for Steve Waugh to stand up to that pace attack and show some ticker like he did against Ambrose in '95, and maybe prove a point to @Samuels who seems to doubt his ability to face up to the nasty fasties.

Bevan goes a place higher up. He's always been good at rebuilding whenever the Australian team has failed miserably against different sorts of bowling attacks. He's our backup plan if the worst should happen. I want him to bowl too. He was a more than useful bowler and even managed to pick up a 10-fer in a Test played in helpful conditions (and guess who the opposition was!). Hoping @Mr Nokkaya doesn't rate him based on his unflattering ODI bowling average alone (but at the same time don't rate him so good that he ends up bowling more overs that Warne :p). And Miller opening gives us space to include Mike Hussey, a similar kind of finisher who shall be the backup of the backup.

Lindwall, Miller, McGrath & Lee - maybe not as deadly as Roberts, Holding, Garner and co, but still very much capable of fighting fire with fire. They should also keep the spotlight off Warne who's probably gonna hate that and hopefully strike with vengeance like he did towards the end of the 1999 World Cup. Waugh is good at chipping in with useful breakthoughs every once in a while and I'm hoping the Bevan gamble pays off. No batsman enjoys facing chinaman spinners no matter who they are. Brad Hogg, Paul Adams and even not so regular bowlers such as Denis Compton, Simon Katich and Bevan himself having 5-fers in some format or the other are proof of that. And please for the love of god ensure that Mike Hussey doesn't bowl. That'd pretty much wreck the entire unit.

I don't care if we win or lose this one. I just want it to be one thrilling contest in which we give no quarter away.

Martin Crowe :c:
John Wright
Stephen Fleming
Jeff Crowe
Craig McMillan :bwl:
Ian Smith :wkb:
Richard Hadlee :bwl:
Chris Harris :bwl:
Dion Nash :bwl:
Danny Morrison :bwl:
John Bracewell :bwl:

Awful batting display in our last match though our bowling restricted the Sri Lankans from reaching the target. Many changes such as dropping Astle, Parore, Cairns, Turner were based on their recent form and hopefully the inclusion of those who I have brought in can make a difference. If Harris' inclusion last match paid off, I'm sure the inclusion of Wright, Jeff Crowe, McMillan and Morrison will do us good.

Gosh! this all sounds more like we are into marketing than being a part of casual leagues in an online forum. Btw, I still stand to my point that Steve Waugh would not be able to get away from our attack. He was a brilliant Test match player without any doubt but he was a much subdued, circumspect kind of ODI batsman particularly against West Indies. More of a test specialist. He has not scored a hundred against us; has a highest score of 72 averaging less than 28 in 50 matches.

Nah, if that were the case, my post would be no less than ten times larger and I'd go on and on about the careers of McGrath, Bradman, Lillee etc till I bore the crap out of everyone.

And this is specifically for when Australia faces the mighty West Indies. I couldn't be bothered to take time out of my life to post similar stuff for when we face other weaker teams.

Test specialists don't dominate World Cups, mate.

He was pretty average with the bat in ODIs just like his early Test days, but transformed into a much better player after turning 30. Just like the case with Allan Border, his stats don't tell the whole story.

Border was much better than Waugh IMO. Anyway, I wanted to convey that Steve has not had a good record against us particularly in the ODIs. Who cares about his record against other teams at this point of time? :p
