5th Test: England vs Australia at the Brit Oval

By that logic can we claim all the Aussies who come over here and play county cricket? England could do with a new opener and I hear Middlesex have a young lad named Philip Hughes on their books...

I think Hampshire had some talented leg-spinner on their books a couple of years back, Shane Warne I think, shall we sign him up?

Also Football(soccer) is the highest junior participation sport.

Yeah, but iirc football (soccer) is one of the highest junior participation sports in the US.

Doesn't make it particularly popular there though does it?

I find it hard to fathom that Football could be more popular than Cricket in Australia. AFL definitely, and possibly Rugby - but Football? Pull the other one...

"In 2007, a survey by Sweeney Sports found that 59% of the Australian public have an interest in cricket, second to none."

It is Australia's favourite sport, that coming from Wikipedia.

Lol, wikipedia?

You live in Victoria so your views on this are somewhat discredited

Haha, good call.

Anyways, South England as we shall call them put in a galiant effort and well done on thieving the Ashes from the Australians.

CDM, as much as you love soccer, it is not and never going to be Australia's favourite sport. Fact.

Cricket/Aussie Rules/Rugby League/Union > Soccer.

Well I played Aussie Football ( AFL ) as a kid and thought cricket was a massive bore fest and didnt even know the rules. AFL is definitely more popular than cricket, Rugby League would also be in Sydney. but over the rest of the country it would be AFL, cricket, League, soccer.

I prefer cricket over AFL now and soccer over League ( I hate Rugby )

I much prefer this.

I've been reading some of the articles from around the world and the consensus seems to be that this was a series between two mediocre teams and South Africa or India would have eaten either for breakfast.
Hard to deny even with SA's defeat to Aus over the winter. The 2005 Ashes team beat South Africa in South Africa; if this team plays like they have done this series they won't emulate them.

There's actually something to Soccer in Australia now. It's actually got more than enough potentially to knock over League and Union, especially as it's got the advantage of a universal coverage, rather than just one corner of the Country. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Rugby League nut, but at the end of the day the round ball clouds are on the horizon and someone's going to get hurt in it's rise. Youth participation in Rugby and AFL is already dropping significantly. We all know the appeal of International events here too, it'll only take the world cup being in Australia and us putting up a true fight in one World Cup before the tide truly will turn.

I laughed off any thought of Soccer challenging any market share in this Country pre-2005, but my god I've been proven wrong.

It's also not fair to compare the popularity of Cricket and AFL. It's hard to compare them.

Pretty decent bowler in Kent. What's his name? Something Parnell?
