5th Test: England vs Australia at the Brit Oval

England have made a mess of this good batting conditions. Bell really should have gone on to make a big one, He's really such an unreliable player. Promising debut by Trott but unfortunate that he was run out.

wth is wrong with Watson? Why is he bowling so badly nowadays :doh

But now Warney is saying that 330 would be a good score on this and he should know - what he doesn't know about spin bowling and spinning conditions would fill a peanut - and England have a decent offspinner in Swann.

I don't care what anyone says about the pitch, you need at least 400 batting first at the Oval to stand a chance of winning.

But had Bell (The set batsman) gone on to make a big one, 400+ would have been easily gettable no matter how much the ball is spinning. 330-350 will be a good score but England still aren't quite there yet. The tail have to fight it out again.

290/7 on Day one on one of the supposedly flattest pitches in England.

Oh well, tough luck England. There is always the next Ashes...

Ponting is just wasting his time by bowling Watson, bring in Siddle and finish it off!

There's a little turn out there, but so long as a paceman is down the other end, the batsman's hardly going to be under pressure to score off the spinner. Uneven bounce might be a factor for the pacemen later but not yet.

I hope England reaches 400 at least. That will be a decent 1`st Innings score. :)

I'm not too dissappointed. Ok, those few wickets at the end make it without a doubt Australia's day, but we haven't lost the game yet, which was important after Headingley.

Look at it this way - to win the test, England were always going to have to bowl well. They still do. Not all that much has changed.

How well or bad have England done here overall?

I was out for the whole of the day, I understand that we did blow it a bit but Warne doesn't seem to think we're too far behind as it is. He thinks 350 is par.

I don't doubt him, 350 would be plenty if you had Shane Warne in your side too. I don't think England will be that sure of themselves with only 350, though.

The pitch isn't bad, England are merely making it look bad

I haven't seen any of todays play but I'm guessing Australia will be the happier of the two teams. It's a shame none of the batsmen that got in were able to go on and make a decent century, just one century would of been good enough to get England to a decent score.

8/307 on one of the flattest pitches isn't a good start for England and I doubt 350 will be a decent total on this pitch. England will need to rely on their bowlers to keep them in the match.
