RANATANGA GUIDES SIRILS TO VICTORY

Monday 23rd September
Bombay Cricket Ground
Audience: 2783 (134 NZ, 1067 Sri Lankans)

Wow what a game of cricket we have seen here today. It has certainly lived up to the rest of tournament, and was won thanks to an inspirational performance.
The New Zealanders won the toss and elected to bat on a dry, hard wicket perfect for batting. As Fleming and Astle made their way to the middle, the 100 or so NZ fans stood and appaulded.

NEW ZEALAND INNINGS, 173/10
Slinger, Vaas and Mahroof all stared for the Sri Lankan's as the New Zealanders posted the lowest total of the tournament so far. The innings started off extremely badly losing the wicket of Fleming for 4. Astle and McMillan also followed suit, leaving the NZers in a hole at 33/3, but Crowe and Hadlee had a great partnership of 70+, to guide them to 104/3 when Hadlee was back in the pavillion with 30 against his name. Crowe passed 50 and was holding the innings together. But when Cairns fell for 2, the innings was played like a script, there was a little bit of resistance from the tail, but when Crowe fell for 71 the innings was about over. Germon made a slow 26, but he couldn't salvage the innings. New Zealand losing their lsat 4 wickets for 23.

On the bowling front Vaas and Malinga took 3 wickets, and Mahroof backed them up with 2 wickets from his 5 overs. Ranatanga also bowled well, with 1 wicket for 5 runs from his 3 overs.

SRI LANKA, 174/5

Arjuna Ranatanga guided Sri Lanka but he was well backed up by De Silva. But the Sirils started badly as Jayasuriya was out for 15, which included a big slog into cow corner and a back cut for 4. But things got worse when Tilkeratne was out for 0 two balls later leaving them 23/2. But Ranatnaga and Attapatu had a 48 run partnership which levered them back on track. Before Attapatu was out for 18. It looked like Ranatanga would be left stranded as he passed 50, as Jayawardene was out 2 balls later for 0, leaving them 72/4. But De Silva made a match-winning 42, before Ranatanga was out for 84. But in came the keeper and played well for 11 not out in the end.

ahh.. Kiwis suffering losses everywhere! Poor batting display... In bowling also, Bond was helpless... Suprise that main bowler Doull was not given a ball! But the main fault was on batting which needs to be worked a lot in next game! Well played Lankans!

Yes! The Powerful Lower order did well, and the pacers did well! Little dissapointed to see nothing in it for Murli. Otherwise good win!

PRESENTATION CEREMONY

UK: Another great game has been seen here in this great tournament. We have witnesssed some great batting and bowling. Unfortunatley for the New Zealanders lost out comfortably to the Sri Lankans. Can i please call upon the man who batted well for the New Zealanders today, Martin Crowe

Martin Crowe said:

UK: Well played Martin today and comiserations on losing today.

Martin Crowe said:
Thanks and i think that the Sri Lankans deserved their victory.

UK: When you came out to bat wickets were falling like clockwork and you had to rebuild.

Martin Crowe said:
Yeah, um when i came out we had lost a wicket in the first over. We lost another 3 quick ones, and that was the hole. But if you look back at the tournament so far all the teams have been in a slight hole, where they have lost quick wickets and needed to rebuild.

UK: How well do you think the team batted and where could you improve?

Martin Crowe said:
Well its not my job to be out here slating people and telling them to improve, i can only focus on my own game and know how to improve. If i'm honest i feel we needed someone else to stay in and make a big score, with me. If you look at the aussies in their first game. They had ponting, gilchrist, chappel and bradman who made big scores. i know we can't be aiming for a score 0f 400, but with 3 50's our score today could have been higher.

UK: What do you hope for in the rest of tournament?

Martin Crowe said:
Well the coach Suren will be putting us through are paces and telling us where we have gone wrong. In the next game we need to come out firing on all cylinders and win, otherwise we are on the plane back home.

UK: OK thank you Martin and well played.

Martin Crowe said:

UK: Well we have seen some great performances today, but the man of the match for his innings is the Sri Lankans main man Arjuna Ranatunga.

Crowd said:
:clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :hpraise :hpraise :hpraise :hpraise :hpraise

UK: Well played Arjie and congrats on the win.

Arjuna Ranatunga said:
Well thank you, its just me you should be saying well done to its the team

UK: What did you make of the bowling? There was piece in the press about the in-experienced bowling line-up.

Arjuna Ranatunga said:
I think they showed the tabloids just how much they know about cricket. Those two came out and took half of NZ wickets and could have had more, they got the balls in the right areas and troubled all the batsmen. This was why they were picked.

UK: Did you think that you could chase the NZ total down easily?

Arjuna Ranatunga said:
Well its the lowest score of the tournament, but the NZ side showed that they wouldn't roll over, and made this really difficult for us. They are great bowling side, and i think they know that they underperformed with the bat.

UK: You came out with an aggressive mind-set, that is what every team seems to play so far.

Arjuna Ranatunga said:
Well yes because its a great batting surface, and if you don't attack you will lose your wicket. I think we played well and paced the innings very well.

UK: What are your aspirations for the rest of the tournament?

Arjuna Ranatunga said:
Well we first have to win another group game, if we do that we are through to the next round, then we will look to progessfrom there.

UK: Well played Arjie and collect your well-deserved man of the match award.
