Who stays?

Left field suggestion time: Andy Hurry.

He's done a fantastic job with Somerset as a man-manager and confidant. With the glut of specialist coaches for every conceivable eventuality, his lack of top class experience is probably

Hurry has done a good enough job, but he's been moved back to Academy Coach at Somerset, so I can't see him then being promoted to England.

Michael Vaughan would be an even worse shout than Giles for me. He just comes out with so much rubbish in the media these days and seems to be far attached from the modern game, unless it involves criticising someone.

Would like an English coach to replace Flower TBF. Angus Fraser & Notts director of cricket Mick Newell interesting local names i'm hearing being touted.

After reading the Cricinfo article on the options, I'd go with Stephen Fleming.

Sure he lacks in experience at the highest level Coaching wise, but he has experience as a player. I think he'd also be good for Cook as he always seemed like a creative Captain who was very successful, which is exactly what we need Cook to somehow be converted into. Plus his playing career means that KP won't be against the appointment either (not the lack of experience that he seemed to dislike in Moores). And more importantly for me, he'd bring new ideas from a different perspective, that the likes of Giles wouldn't be capable of.

I should add though, that Kirsten would be better, but wouldn't want it for the same reasons that he left South Africa, and that without a doubt, Giles is getting the job.

If Flower was getting stale, then his replacement really should be as un-Flower-y as possible. Less emphasis on analysis, someone that isn't a robot, perhaps a genuine Englishman.

I probably like Angus Fraser of any of the names suggested thus far

I heard Dean Jones has been suggesting today that Shane Warne should get the job! Now that would be a hire and a half, taking him out from under the Aussie noses. Could it happen? It would certainly please KP, if that is a factor at all. Warne has spent a lot of time in England, so leaving Australia is reasonably plausible, provided he gave up his poker and charity commitments. Interesting idea anyway.

I think there was also an article saying Warne isn't particularly interested in taking up that job.

Not really close to the English county game but is there anyone who plays aggressive 'balls out' cricket or is it all just a bit too English?

Yes I think you are right - it would be very unlikely he takes the job...but I think he'd be perhaps the ideal candidate for England.

Maybe if ECB were to give him an offer he couldn't refuse. Unlimited pizza and girls in the dressing room? Spray tan and teeth whitening station at every ground? I'm sure they could come up with something lucrative for Warney :D

On twitter Warne ruled out the England vacancy.

That is such a shame..come the next Ashes I'd love to hear is press conferences. He would be torn between Pommie bashing and Aussie bashing!

my 2c is that I'm pretty sure that Giles will get it. I don't want him to, I think we need someone not currently part of the national setup. So for me, Kirsten would be perfect but unlikely due to his family commitments, so after him I'd prefer either Fleming or Fraser.

I can see Giles Clarke screwing us all with the worst-case scenario. Giles get the job but is forced to drop KP as a condition of getting it... :facepalm
