Any Improvements?

I know this idea may have been thrown around a few times, but what are the thoughts on a donation scheme? I know at the moment the current income is all through advertising (and which I believe is at 60$ a day? :p) but if you had a donation scheme it would be able to cover some more of the costs. If someone donated say more than or equal to a set amount of money they could get something like a 'Premium Member' tag, this seems them let into a private 'Premium Member' forum where only people who have donated get the permission to go into.

I reckon there are a lot of people that would love to help out and would maybe be for donating to PC and the Premium Member tag allows other people to see they have donated and will look up to them and then they may donate in return.

Admin's thoughts? I know this sort of thing is implemented on other sites and it's done well.
 
Well there we go, people should know about it then! Is there a current incentive to donate?
 
I know we have a user group for donors, but I can't remember what besides a usertitle they get. Colin set it up so he will have to make a post.

I've always been somewhat weary of giving privileges to paying members and I've seen some sites go way too far in pushing that on people and I'd never want to make people feel like they are obligated to donate.

One of the admins who actually puts money on the line is probably best to respond though, $12 is the most I've paid towards the site in my own out of pocket costs.

Though to go to what I think brings it up a lot, the server is a monthly commitment, so while one off donations help us with things like purchasing the various site software, we need to be able to fund our monthly costs out of ad revenue, which is why the ads are so awful (like the diet ad that shows if you zoom out you get thinner) but necessary.
 
Think it was zim who set up the donaters group. I'm currently trying to boost the ad relevance and revenue. I've disallowed a few of the weight loss and white teeth ads but they seem to get back in anyway...
We always welcome donations but, as Matt says, we're not looking to go down the road of a premium content site.
 
I'm not really trying to proposition a premium content site, i'm just saying that if people had an incentive donate then they might. Everyone likes to complain at the moment about how the site is playing up constantly this would be one way for them to stop complaining, my idea if you were to implement it would be that you could have two donation groups, the just donators group and the serial donators.

Of course, the serial donators would get more privileges than the one off donators, I just think it's one way to be able to silence the critics who keep complaining about the server and another way of brining in a bit of income.

I'm all for having a "premium," side to the websites, not entirely sure why the Admins don't want to do something like that, however, to be penalized for just paying once isn't something I'd do.

Why not have a subscription, say ?4.00 for the year?
 
Well the ones that I have in mind currently are;

For a one off donators then a user title and they could be placed in a user group and maybe they have their usernames bolded. So maybe not very much for just one off donators but say for the serial donators who donate say more than 10$ a month than they would be given a user title maybe like 'Premium Member' and then maybe like their name in gold and they could have the site add free? But that would be at a push and not sure if you would be able to implement that? But if they are donating 10$ a month which from what I believe is 1/6 of the current daily revenue?

It's just small things that give an incentive for people to donate and help the forums out, it also gives you something to give back to the people that complain, you could just say, well if it really bothers you, you can donate.

  • Special downloads for cricket games
  • Elite graphics tutorials
  • No time limit between searches/posts
 
Good idea there Pranav but I don't agree with a lot of them.

The ones I like are the private forum, recognition, coloured username, less advertising, custom user title and the increased pm space, but I don't agree with the increase in sig and avatar sizes, the elite graphics tutorials and special cricket 07 downloads.
