Bairstow thinks the keeper has taken the ball and they're not attempting a run so ball is dead. Scratches his foot in the crease as his switch off marker. But he didn't actually check behind him to make sure the oppo was on the same page. It's a schoolboy error.
Dismissing a batsman who is out of his ground for no other reason than that he is under the impression the ball is dead is generally considered scummy cricket but Bairstow was off on safari.
