Asia Cup 2022 - Sri Lanka (UAE)

Babar's poor form also made an impact, Otherwise Rizwan and Babar usually make 60-70 runs partnership.

170 runs were too much for a high pressure Final game.
170 was an easy chase in these conditions, actually.
Babar should also learn to stay calm when the opposite side is hitting sixes. When you panic, it reflects in the entire ground.
I didn’t see panic, but i did see defensiveness. He tried to give more overs to Ifti to avoid bringing Nawaz in while a leftie was batting (despite Rajapaksa having a weakness vs SLA), and to keep Naseem and Haris for later. Bad idea, should have gone for the kill when they were 60-5.
Also one thing that is clear is that Babar and the coaches have no clue about data analysis. Not a new thing at all, but it’s astonishing how they’re not seeing how extensively it is used now, given that Islamabad and Multan rely on it in PSL.

I legit didn't understand what he was inferring here. How did honesty come into picture? Is he asking to not be friends and like each other

It’s a very 80s and 90s mentality, believing that competitive rivalry fuels the team to greater heights. Not tough to understand where he is coming from when arguably the most successful Pakistani team had infamous feuds in the dressing room between the likes of Abbas, Imran, Miandad and whatnot. Still don’t think it is sustainable or any good in this day and age though.

He’s inferring that he’s not being selected due to personal likes and dislikes of captain/selectors/God knows who.
But in fact, he’s not being selected because he couldn’t learn to bat against pace in 25 years.

He started out in the 90s team though, which was brought down by those feuds.

Pakistan is going with too many half batsmen in the sides Iftikhar, Khushdil, and Asif. Only one can play within these three.
Agreed. Iftikhar has blown his chance. Khushdil is just crap. Asif should stay.
We need to give chance to Haider Ali and bring back Shan Masood
Agreed.
Shoaib Malik
After that tweet, you want that snake in the team? Let alone the fact that he averages like 10 in T20s in Australia, with 10+ innings

That's a ridiculous thing to say. Is he seriously thinking he can make the side today, does Shoaib Malik?

He grew up whilst looking up to the 80s and early 90s side though which I believe does influence your opinion early on in your career. Don’t meet your heroes and all of that lest you want the illusion to be shattered.

In any case he shouldn’t be picked barring a miracle.

We call him the PR King for a reason. He does whatever he thinks will make him look good. Right after a bad loss in a final, when everyone's frustrated, especially the more casual fans who lack understanding, he tweets something like this.
He’s known for making journalists and celebrities tweet in his favour. He’s already got a showbiz career lined up thanks to these contacts.

I legit want to see this team play someday lol

I’d argue that they wouldn’t actually be bad if the spotlight isn’t on them. Despite all the hype around it, I don’t think the IPL has ever given our players the highest pressure handling capabilities. You’ll be far more comfortable stepping up to a bilateral series owing to the increased exposure you gain from facing better players compared to domestic cricket for sure but your average knockout in the IPL has no real passion or ties to it beyond players wanting to perform well for higher honours and recognition because the squads get refreshed so frequently and the tournament happens only for two months and there is a chance every year.

That is never going to give you the sort of pressure you feel representing your country at global events with the entire nation watching and judging your every move and the risk of forever ruining your chance for further opportunities or a positive legacy. At best the IPL is a more lucrative version of a shits and giggles tournament and a part of what’s going wrong is the fans and several people involved in cricket believing it to be taken that competitively by most players and using it as a barometer for handling real pressure.

Not much surprised by Sri Lanka's win there. As long as I have followed them over the last few years, they have played some fearless Cricket and constantly have promoted the likes of Dickwella, Shanaka, Gunathilaka, Hasaranga and most importantly Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

Their numbers don't actually show up because of the lack of consistency but when on song they've made sure that they were over the line.

In T20Is you just have to perform well in some phases to let the momentum just flow over to your side. And Sri Lanka in the finals did just that. 58/5 and then came that partnership between Rajapaksa and Hasaranga where they got the hopes of making it to 160+ and eventually they got 170! I think those 21 runs in last 7 deliveries just made the difference.

I know 170 wasn't as big a total but that was 170 on a used pitch that had slowed down with time. To make use of it, Sri Lanka had some medium pacers and a couple of mystery spinners in their bowling attack.

What Pakistan lacked in their batting was role clarity and when exactly they had to shift gears. Their problem as always has been timing their run chase. We just saw that in the game against Afghanistan where they just got lucky.

Finally something to celebrate for Sri Lanka which was good to see!
